7:30 I really disagree, I play them for bulding a city to support a large army. That combat is "meh" to you tells me you play on normal or easy difficulty. Try facing Hannibal in Caesar 3 or a invading horde in Zeus on max difficulty, now that is epic LOTR huge battles. You can turn the difficulty up and down whenever you want, so I play on medium and 1 month before invasion yank it up too max difficulty. What are your thoughts on Lethis path of progress? Personally I feel the lack of military and world map with trading partnes/allies/rivals ruins the tension and immersion. Would also love to see factions/political parties /revolt/street fights/martial law etc implemented in city builders at least to make up for lack of combat.

This was my absolute favorite. Tried Zeus, Caesar, and even Emperor. But Pharaoh/Cleopatra was the best. The music was catchy too.

I miss Impressions games. They were so chill. The best city building games. This games atmosphere was great. The music, the look. You nailed it when mentioning how it owns it’s setting. Zeus was my favourite though.

The monument building is what really sets this game apart in my opinion. Building your first pyramid is a feeling of satisfaction i've never replicated in another city builder game.

I remember playing this game. I loved it, one of the few strategy games that captured me after AOE2. The complexity of the economy was ridiculous. There was beer and pottery and flax etc I was for every trying to keep those little guys happy to get the pretty renovated houses.

Loved playing this game back when. Never played Zeus, but I had Caesar II & III, but never grabbed me as much as Pharaoh did. I think a major reason for this is how Pharaoh's aesthetic reinforces a sense of... purpose. In Caesar, you're building a town because... settlement, I guess. Meanwhile, present a Pharaoh player with a random spot on the Nile and the available resources lead to all manner of pet projects. Colosseums and such just don't compare to the construction of Pyramids and Temple Complexes, y'know?

AS wierd as this sounds but i always do preffer for there to be a form of combat in these kinda games , something thats rare but it happens, cause especially in games like Ceaser the eras while city building and economy takes main stage you cannot fully have the theme withouth the risk of War and Siege , there is a reason they built walls ,castles and strongholds. It doesnt have to be deep and intricate , just varied to allow for some sense of strategy while placeing down walls and defences

I had four Impressions games: Air Bucks - interesting airline business simulation, but done in by bugs after a certain point. Lords of the Real - interesting game to conquer and rule Britain, but full of bugs. Still playable, though. Caesar II - interesting city builder, but not really "Roman". Economy hard to figure out, documentation was weak. Pharaoh - awesome in (almost) every way. Combat was a distraction, and could have been left off. The use of "walkers" to make everything work was kind of awkward. But! The Egyptian gods took an active role! Monuments were awe-inspiring! Complex ways to build complex cities! Intricate economy to enable all the goods and gold needed! Careful placement of each building type! Good overview of a very good game. Thanks!

You should have played Emperor. By far it's the best game in the series. Everything about the game pays testament to the evolution of the series. In that game they got everything right. I admit Zeus seemed to be a little bit more child friendly than Pharoah or the Caesar games.

Earned it doing something and my parents bought it for me. You guys remember how big the PC games boxes were back in those days + thick booklet it came with? Man the boxes themselves were so good back then. I dropped so many hours in this game. I wish they could do a remake with realistic but still sprite-y graphics.

they dont make games like this anymore where they combine REAL historical events, mitology, economics, relations etc. I play this game where i was like 10yrs old and thanks to this game I learned almost everything about egipt mitology in a very fun and exciting way and also learned how things in REAL life works. this game was and is great for children, only issue of this game are the housing are too sensitive and too hard to elite them. Emperor rize of the middle kingtom in my opinion is the perfection in gameplay. Today games are full of pew pew trash

I'm totally with you on this one. I love games that can actually teach something about real life. It usually also helps with immersiveness. I was a little sad seeing the leaders in Civ 6 being so cartoony. When I was small and played Civ 2 and 3, I actually thought about the game's abstractions like corruption and government types. It felt to me like they were actually how the developers imagined those things were. Now, with all the modifiers, while they are more and complex, them being all over the place makes me feel about them more as a balancing act than of a historical representation. Though I can't blame them too much on this one. But it still makes me sad. Anyway, enough off-topic. Cheers!

I have fucking PTSD from this game from doing one mission or something and things went comedically wrong. I was early in the game. The first thing that was a signal of things to come was that my people got malaria even though I had a bunch of doctors. And then everything was going fine. The game seemed to encourage me to keep building to make objectives and that the more friendly and prosperous I made the city, the more people would come. That was when all hell broke loose. I don't even know or remember how (was a long time ago) but my city got in crippling debt. Like when I got the first warning I slowed production but my debt still kept accumulating until no one would give anymore gold and my huge prosperous city failed by default because of that. I have never played the game since LOOL. I STILL HAVE THE MANUAL AND DISC IN MY PC DESK. IDK IF I SHOULD GIVE IT A TRY AGAIN THO. I don't wanna spend another hour again to only fail LOOL

Having played Ceaser lll, Pharaoh and Zeus I find I liked Pharaoh best. Especially after the Cleopatra expansion pack came out. Is the gameplay perfect? No. Is the UI ? No. But it's pretty damn good. Could the graphics be better? I suppose. But consider just what the normal PC was running when the game out. I actually got to the point that when I played I just used the Sandbox mode.

Great game, well maybe except for that mission where the Pharaoh was bombarding you with requests whilst an army was attacking you and the Kingdom Rating was bugged, and I think the name of that mission was Iunet.

i didnt know titled mills made any other games, well then i recommend children of the nile by them. a 3d city building nile game, its old as hell though so it might be hard to find. there's even military campaigns but all of it's "turn based" and in the background, so you can feel like a pharoah without actually worry about your city being raided. without it there wouldnt be the dynamic of balancing all parts of society. i really need to stress that it's in the background, as you then off an army and the 20 years later based off their supply lines you'll win the war. its a very complex game so i wanted to share it :) tho be warned its VERY hard... you probably wont be doing much but litterally praying to the nile to be good each year, sloqly though you'll build a city larger and more complex than sim city, black and white 2, or pretty much anyother 3d city builder that i can think of. thats probably do to its economy allowing complete control of tons of materials, needed for tons of goods, sold to tons of professions which then allow you to create tons of buildings. ive never played stronghold but i think it's about as complex as it from what i can tell (except its 3d :D)

FYI Children of the Nile was basically a spiritual successor to Pharaoh - Tilted Mills had a lot of former Impressions Games devs that joined the studio folded. As such many of the game mechanics are similar or identical. I played it but couldn't get into it to anywhere near the extent I got into Pharaoh - the latter has far more polish & epic scope than Children of the Nile. Furthermore the sprite graphics of Pharaoh have a lot more charm and look far better than the lo-res muddy textures of the 3d engine used on CotN

This game lacked a special encounter/disaster, called Moses. When he comes, your empire falls. I also never encountered the deadly mist that can only be deflected with lamb blood on the door frame. Such a missed opportunity. Still a fun game. Now if you excuse Me, I may take a bath in -virgins blood- goat Milk....

I think I spent few hours once like 20 years ago playing a demo version of this. Seemed like sim city in Egyptian settings so ok game but not too innovative. Today it seems 2-dimentional, grainy and way out of date.
