That would explain why Gyigas is so in pain and so blindly obsessed with Ness. And also why the only way to kill him is to erase him from existence, freeing him from the sufferings he inflicted to himself. That also fits with the lore Porky himself explains: Gyigas became so strong that his power took over him, lost his common sense and his body. Wow, not only it's Porky describing what he will be like in Mother 3, but he is also the best character to know such a thing since it's about himself, and who else can understand himself if not him?

I dig your theory. I don’t necessarily need one of them to be correct. The idea of porky being a friend of Ness who was lured by giygas’ promise of power is intriguing and pretty simple. But the idea of him being giygas himself and trying to fight his own destiny, that’s so cool, and it makes so many things click into place. I’m almost always impressed by Mother fans being able to come up with connections and answers across these games.

It would also be important to note that both Porky and Giygue's names are technically adjectives, as Giygue's name was created to describe something disturbing beyond comprehension. Porky describes Porky's round and plush form like that of a pig, and garners the polar opposite reaction to Giygue, a word and name invented to describe something unpleasant. That unpleasant something just also happened to be Porky, especially in Mother 3 as he had basically indulged in eating chimera abominations. So the idea that Porky is an incarnation of Giygas is not only believable, but severely depressing as he had not been this bad before as Giygas, and most likely wouldn't have turned this way if he had a loving mother and father as Porky, and a lack of motherly love basically stripped him of all PSI power. Dude reset the universe to be a kid's neighbor, patch over their differences, and maybe become friends, but the universe came back with the loudest smack in existence. No mom. No dad. No love. No PSI. No friends. Your psychically gifted neighbor is comin' to kill ya with his brain. And your abusive mother set everything into motion. Yeah, I'd be shitting my pants, scrambling for a solution only to go insane too.

Wow... This is honestly one of the most interesting, unique, and frankly believable theories I've ever heard. You make some genuinely believable and eye-opening evidence for this idea, which in concept would seem so bizarre and unbelievably insane, that it would rival the Sans is Ness theory. But unlike that theory, the evidence and information that makes the idea actually possible isn't some random details and thinly-veiled connections to make a half-assed theory, its things that aren't ever explained, are odd or peculiar additions to the story, and just, make so much genuine sense. Honestly its stuff like this that inspires me to want to make characters with such fascinating and lore-filled backstories, as so people can have such amazing and cool theories like these. Overall, you did fantastic, and you should feel proud of yourself for making this.

@locke103 can't speculate on it but it could be a hole in the theory. If we were to speculate we could say that since we see nothing of his family and just his master, perhaps his parents died, be it recently or not, but before passing the mother loved him enough to inspire the blossom of his PSI powers. Idk but this is one of my favorite things about this game/franchise. There's so much room for theories and that's what was intended I think.

Great stuff, I wondered about how all Mother games could relate, but I thought of something that I find curious, if Porky was really the Giygas of his own Universe or timeline, then I wonder how he was not recognized but the Starman Jr. at beginning? Also Porky also never went to Winters from my understanding, but there was a whole Starmen base their apparently under his command.

I've thought about this on some level, I was going to talk about Starman Jr. but somehow I didn't get around to it in the video. A few possibilities; This Starman Jr. came through time from an entirely different timeline then the one where Porky ruled, (He's possibly even the very same one from the Podunk Zoo who is Universe hoping), OR he is from the current timeline and Porky changed his appearance at some point after the victory in the future where Porky devastated the Universe, or who knows, maybe he has just never met his boss in the flesh and doesn't know what he looks like??? As for Winters I used to believe when I thought Mother 2 comes after Mother 1 that the Winters base was a holdout from Giygas's invasion of the 80's and they were still there having not been fought off by Ninten, but I think you may be wrong and Porky actually did know about what happened in Winters; he has artifacts and even a film set up in New Pork City/ Empire Porky Building that lay out Ness and his friends entire adventure and this clearly includes Winters, (this also really shows how omniscient Porky is at the same time, hinting that he always had some strange, unseen Psi Power telling us he always knew what Ness and the chosen four were doing at all times despite not being there at all times).

You hear porkys theme and he barges in and takes them to the base. Porky knows the dr, applekid, and others are pivotal to developing a phase distorter and uses their knowledge to build one for himself

Great video, thank you 😊 I just recently got into Earthbound and idk how this series flew under my radar for so long, it’s an absolute masterpiece. The lore hits so much differently than any other game. Also I didn’t realize how much Pokémon “borrowed” from earth bound.. I’ve kind of been making a list in my mind as I’m playing but I’m up to about a dozen borrowed ideas. From the PP system(not sure if Mother was the first to utilize this system though), the item being called Dragonite(seriously?!) some of the items like the exit mouse or the Hawkeye remind me of a 1:1 for HM moves. I have more, and I plan on making a video on it(I searched and only found one video that talks about it). Feel free to use the idea, you seem to have more skills for that kind of thing. Okay so one other thing ive had mulling around in my mind about Porky. We know pretty well how old he is in onett, twoson, and fourside. But once we see him having stolen the prototype phase distorter along with a mr saturn prior to the 8th sanctuary location, then we have an issue. We dont know how far back (or forwars for that matter) in time he went. By the time Ness catches up with h im when they travel back, he could he 1 or even 5 years older. By that time he could have orchestrated much of what happened in earthbound.

With multiple playthroughs of this game and 20 years of writing experience behind me, I can safely and without a doubt say that while the story of Earthbound does make sense, I'm pretty sure somebody had to go back, edit and try to make sense of all the little crazy stories that were crammed into the cartridge, each event in Earthbound, if you take away the Giygas plot, all appear to be their own independent stories, even everything that happens in the past is its own independent thing when you look at it in hindsight. The final battle in particular is the biggest instance of this given it is completely separated from *everything* else in the game. There is no explanation in the game as to why the orb in the machine represents Ness and not something else other than creep factor that was added in last minute, and text in the final battle likewise just being reflective of a misunderstood meta-memory from the writer of the major plotline that also has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the game. It's just a big amalgamation of stuff that somebody tried to make sense of in the final revision and what we have is the best writing revision we got. As well written as Earthbound is, it really doesn't get any deeper than the fact that it was somebody trying to make sense of a lot of convoluted and disconnected ideas.

Some more food for thought, and this has been weighing on my mind heavily the past few days. I rather this than the abject depression, but I digress. One of these Japanese-specific guidebooks states one trait of the Sound Stone, it has an XX mark. Naturally a detail that wouldn't make a lick of sense or difference to, I'm sure. 99.8% of western players playing in 1995. But the links to Magicant and melodies, it makes sense. The Mani Mani Statue, upon first inspection, plays that small melody heard in the caves of Beginnings that lead to Magicant. The fact it leads the Moonside is pretty interesting. I've wondered if the statue itself was made or coated with... something akin to the Sound Stone or the pink spiral rocks. Those two, in the least, lead more to the innermost workings of specific characters. Moonside with pretty much the side B of Fourside, so who's to say if any mitigating factors attributed to this.

I always thought giygas somehow found a way to merge consciousness with porky somehow. By use of the mani at first and then once the mani was broken porky had a strong drive to go directly to giygas to merge more fully. At the same time also needing to slow neas down. As giygas only real representative on earth to do his bidding and who had the most knowledge about ness. Porky is not himself at all by the time of the cave of the past. In fact id say porky has merged giygas genius into his mind while moving his idiocy ignorance and innocence into the devils machine. Giygas however wasnt able to merge his power into porky. Ness arrives too early for that. So porky takes a risk and opens the devils machine to try and overwhelm his friends in what is basically giygas magicant. But the power of love and espcially ness mothers encouragement pierces that reminding giygas twisted mind of the love he experie ced from maria. Porky skips to a different era. No linger just porky byt also part giygas. The form of giygas magicant fades away just like maria or ness magicant. Ness was able to beat his nightmare. But giygas failed to defeat his. And so when his magicant faded away, so did he and all that was left was ness. Porky now powerless but still a strategic genius finds other ways of manipulating people. But..... he still has a small corner of his mind who still misses his friend ness.

I love this theory but I do have some issues. 1. Why couldn't Giygas prevent himself from reincarnating into an abused household? 2. If he is able to affect variables like Ninten's reincarnation being his next-door neighbor. Why couldn't he make it so that Maria was his mother? Unless I'm misunderstanding of course.

That makes a lot of sense, but when i think about this theory, i start to wonder if this wouldn't inevitably happen. Assuming this theory is correct for a minute, where i to put myself in Giegue's shoes, if i decided to reset the universe, and reincarnate as Ninten's "neighbour", the possibility of growing in an abusive household wouldn't even cross my mind, as the only human experience i had been acquainted with up to that point was motherly love. I'd probably have no concept of what an abusive household could even be, or what a neighbour could be, maybe not even hold a grasp on the concept of friendship. Although this is up for interpretation, as we don't know what Giegue's total knowledge of Earth is. However i'd assume that his wish would be limited to a very strong, core desire, like, "i want to meet Ninten again/i want to grow up close to Ninten." instead of being able to foresee and plan everything that this would entail. We could also assume that even if he happened to be able to gain knowledge of everything this resurrection process would entail, there's a chance he'd not want to know. Were i to be on the same shoes, maybe i wouldn't either.

Porky might have a full link with Giygas In the Novelization Porky qoute "Harboring Giygas inside him" The Devil Machine has a really weird fleshy look too, some would say it's the birthcanal But, I'd say it's ACTUALLY a brain Porky's Brain Also, in one stage part of Giygas looks like an "Eye" like Porky is seeing Ness through his eye He even does have items in New Pork City that out right has a Certain Weapon that's labeled as being "Best Friend Bat" What does Ness primarily use as a weapon ? whie it would be nice for this to be the final end itori made a mistake by introducing space-time travel. its inclusion makes continuing the story possable, the capsule while powerful isnt retroactive by going back to its creation a flaw could be introduced into its construction to make it no longer absolutely safe andronuts maybe smart but he's not omniscent. annother way to short circut this fate is to make using the capsul not an option or otherwise stop portkey from getting in. this could be accomplished by slowing its construction down or stalling its transport making it unavalible during the battle a more darker twist to this would be to kidnap andronuts before he can complete it meaning construction flaws would be more likely to be not detected and may even arise natuarly due to annother working on unknown tech trying to complete it.
