Fun fact: The one time in that final fight that Lucas can actually attack Claus normally without stopping or getting second thoughts is when Flint gets obliterated. A hint for Locria being a traitorous Magypsy is actually the types of chords of each diatonic scale. The first six (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and Aeolian, in order) are a pattern of minor and major. Locrian, the final scale, is neither a minor nor major, but a diminished scale. Locria is nothing like the other magypsies, because the locrian scale is nothing like the other scales. It would make perfect sense for Locria to be the traitor.

One touch that I love about the disguised Mr. Saturn at around 2:37:50 is that if you walk back you can see that he is still there staring at a wall. He says "Zuchinni". How is it that someone could've made a game so emotionally mature and heartbreaking almost 20 years ago? It blows my mind that, even as videogames nowadays still struggle with connecting to the players in the way that an artform should, as long as it's taken/taking people to understand the value of exploring different emotional relationships with the players, such as frustration, sadness and pain, Mother 3, and honestly the entire Mother series seems to take it for granted and do it so effortlessly. People still to this day disregard video games as mindless drivel and an immature waste of time. For most games, that may even be true. But still, Itoi seemed to just... get it, from the moment he approached the medium of video games, back in the fucking 80s! Of course people will care about what happens in a game. Of course, you can bring a person to tears while they hold a controller. Of course, you can convey the entirety of human experience in one, tiny, megabyte-sized cartridge. Because if you care about it, if you love it, then others will love it too. Fuck. Shit. Goddamnit.
@NickHchaos3 жыл бұрын
Easy-this was the tail end of the golden age of games and RPGs that those of us that grew up in the 80s and 90s were lucky to experience. It was the union of blossoming technology, good writing, and an exciting new medium..games pre early 90s were too simple to convey sophisticated music and story, games after this period typically did away with all this in favour of increasingly sophisticated graphics, mirroring the rise of technology-visuals and immediate attention grabbing gameplay over conceptual depth and an attempt to actually connect with people via story. That’s pretty much a relic of the past, as far as I can tell. Modern games seem pretty boring and soulless to me.
@OccuredJakub123 жыл бұрын
@@NickHchaos No, I mean they still try that all the time. FFX had a whole different team and direction than the golden age but still told a deep and impactful story. Lost Oddysey and the first Xenoblade Chronicles, heck The Last Of Us and GoW4 are specifically praised for their storytelling.

@@OccuredJakub12 I wouldn’t know, I stopped playing games and RPGs after the early 2000s, whenever I tried again I was disappointed. Lisa: The Painful, was one of the only modern games that really amazed me, and that was 100% indie in the most possible way.

Beautiful commentary, I loved your earthbound one too. One thought about the layout of the Nowhere Islands being dragon shaped. I always saw it as the dragon sleeping curled up, with the head being where New Pork City would be and the tail being the islands leading up to Tane Tane island. This would make the final needle all the more impactful, with it situated on the head A few more things I noticed in this game that may or may not be references. The mushroom trip seems to be this game's version of Magicant, as it is an otherworldy place where people unlock the thoughts and secrets in their mind. Another reference are the Magypsies. As stated they are all named after musical modes. The mode Locria is named after, the Locrian mode, technically does not exist in real life as it is the only mode with no harmony, it has no resolution. Which is perfectly in tune with Locria.

I mean "silly earthbound drug trip" is kinda the way I introduce it to people who do not know about the game because it's such a striking way to describe something and also to not spoil the thematic and character depth from this area, but obviously I understand the purpose of that area in the game. I feel like most people just make the silly drug trip joke for similar reasons. It's a solid example of the type of humor in the game. A lot of the humor is tinged with depth and terror, but the drug trip is a pretty inherently funny thing and some funny shit happens in that section alongside the darker shit.

2:15:28 - I think what they mean by 'giving Duster more to do' is he gets more development. Kumatora searches for Duster for a bit, she helps Salsa escape and gets the party into the concert and watches while Lucas and Boney go into a dungeon? With Duster, you have an entire dungeon, and an entire story arc with him and DCMC that develops his character. Duster gets almost two full chapters of development while Kumatora doesn't even get a quarter of a chapter. And by the end of the game, you know about as much about Kumatora as you did when you first saw her.
@Ranixo2862 жыл бұрын
Yeah the closest thing we get is Tanetane Island where her insecurity is "Princess Kumatora isn't even a princess, she's like a stick nobody loves!" And I feel like they could have expanded on her feeling disconnected from her culture as an Osohe descendant, or even having her show some reaction to the fact that she basically has to kill the people who raised her to save the world. I guess it kind of can be implied she uses her brashness to hide behind a sort of imposter syndrome, or feels like she has to be strong and useful for people to like her,, but it would have made for some compelling storytelling if they actually went and developed these aspects.
@SBaby2 жыл бұрын

As part of the real human group of being non-binary I am completely fine with the depiction of the magipsies. They are powerful good entities in the world. They rant humans and hence I think can be a completely different design from them. Your description of them is the best one that I have heard and I think it really works for them. Could have a better job been done with the magipsies? Yes, but additionally I don't feel as though it was a bad depiction of some non-binary people and showed non-binary people like me in a negative light. I remember hearing about a interview with Itoi and he was asked about the magipsies where he responded to the likes of that those people (non-binary people) exist in the world and should be recognized, and for 2006, this is really good. I can't think of another group that is non-binary before this game and very few after this. I like that the magipsies exist even if they could be better.
