Actually I'm pretty sure Level-5 did end up reusing this concept! Although not a mmorpg, they did release a rpg life sim on the 3ds titled Fantasy Life in 2012 (2014 for us yanks), which featured some of the things promised to be in the mmo such as multiple character classes as well as customization (Although DEFINITELY not to the degree as promised originally).

I hope you're not still mad. No doubt you're well aware of just how terrible and abusive Microsoft/Xbox used to be before Phil Spencer and his team turned things around.

I remember this being my most wanted game for XBL when it was announced. Following any sort of news of any progress for this game. I was crushed when I heard it was cancelled. So much progress, if only Microsoft didn't push too hard, this might have been a reality...a shame :(
@Yuriofwind3 жыл бұрын
It could have changed the entire mmo landscape, that would have been the time frame to attempt that. Shame.
@MikuruX Жыл бұрын
If I'm not mistaken, hype for this game in Japan was so high that people were starting to buy the Xbox just for this game back then. Once it was announced it was cancelled, it pretty much killed any momentum the Xbox brand had going forward as people started to sell off the system and I don't think they never recovered since. I still remember when I signed up for the closed beta when it opened at the time while I was still in the military back in 2003.

With the number of games that talk about how you can be anything, I honestly wonder if someone has ever tried making an MMO without NPCs. You log in and you can class into knights, kings, lords, cooks, blacksmiths, and someone basically HAS to play every role. If there's no one being a blacksmith there's no one making and selling weapons, so the knights can't get their gear to quest with, and the knights need to do quests the blacksmiths and other players can send them on. Kings and lords give out hunting quests for good EXP, but blacksmiths give out farming quests to get new materials so they can enhance their craft and also make new weapons and armor for the adventurer characters. I mean, this would literally be building an online civilization and no doubt have a mass of headaches that NPCs solve. I could see convenience like shopkeeps and blacksmiths being able to set up an NPC version of themselves to sell items when they're offline, and if they happen to drop the game it becomes apparent by their lack of progression through new materials and their stock eventually empties out. Considering EVE Online exists and has been called an "Excel simulator" because of all the micromanaging and shit people do, it wouldn't surprise me if there's people out there that would literally dedicate dozens of hours to running the finances of a fictional kingdom online. Of course, the ultimate death to this idea is that most people don't want to be a blacksmith or a cook, they want to fuck up dragons and stuff. So you'd probably have a lot of adventurers begging for quests and only a few kings and nobles and blacksmiths giving them out. Kinda like real life where everyone wants to be a novelist, but no one wants to clean sewers.

One thing I like about Yuri is how his videos still keep that cozy feeling. I think the endslates are like the signature thing that makes each video funnier in their own ways. Idk what it is but I always used to binge them during sick days middle school lol. Makes me happy to see more vids coming out :)) keep em up. I'm trying to catch up on Xbox stuff now, I avoided them like the plague so its no surprise this game is new to me lol.

The biggest shame is it sounds like the game was pretty much done just a feature or 2 missing and maybe 1 or 2 not quite done. I can understand canceling a game when very little progress is made but if the game is pretty much done and there's no rights issues there's really no reason not to let them finish. By the sound of it, it sounds more finished then some games that have been released.

You left out the sandal that Level 5 was using the funds Microsoft was paying them to publish a game on the PS2. I do wish the game came out on the 360 for launch it would have been amazing on there and the netcode problems would have had more than enough time to be worked out.

Yes the game was finished content wise as you said but they still had a ways to go for networking, They asked Microsoft for more time and money to make the game playable online and Microsoft said no. They even opened registration for a beta test(I'm guessing Microsoft pushed for this) but had to keep delaying the beta cause they didn't have functioning servers and finally Microsoft got tired of waiting.
