The best part about the Sheng Long joke was that it wasn't just Gouken being playable that came from it, but various other changes to fighting games following the original Street Fighter II "Sheng Long has a finisher where he does a Shoryuken while his fist is on fire" became the Shinryuken, a staple of Ken's moveset, as well as the fact that Ken's Shoryuken had a fire effect "You get to fight him after getting to the end of the Arcade Mode without taking damage" is literally the way you unlock fighting Akuma Even just the article itself led to Ed Boon, the creator of Mortal Kombat, making hoaxes to get fans to play the Mortal Kombat series more and more

One of my favorite video games hoaxes that became reality was the rumor of Ermac in MK 1. Some fans digging in the games code found that under a line of code that said Reptile Battles was the phrase “Ermac.” Naturally being in the Stone Age that was the 90’s where computer knowledge wasn’t as wide spread as it is now, people misinterpreted it as a secret *secret* character you can fight and unlock, instead of just an abbreviation of the term “Error Macro.” Midway took the piss out of this rumor in MK 2 by having secrets in the game joking about his existence even out right saying that he doesn’t exist. But like how small jokes from the past become our present reality, they finally made him a playable character in MK 3 and has been a fan favorite ever since.

The 17th colossus is still probably our favorite gaming rumor of all time because there was actually a sense of legitimacy to it, give how the world was so big, the fact there was evidence of other colossi in the game at one point of development, to the fact that one cut colossus is still in the game somewhat. It was just an interesting rumor, that pay off in a way with the remake, as the Sword of Dormin and the enlightenments were put into the game because people were still exploring the Forbidden Lands (and thr Sword could be considered a colossus if you think about it). And fans are still interested in the idea of more colossi given that two big fan projects are being worked on, with the goal of bringing those cut colossi back.

Anyone here remember the Super Mario Galaxy DS hoax? Someone decided to make a fake trailer for a DS port of Mario Galaxy for a school project or whatever before Galaxy was even released, but they decided to have fun with it by posting their work online. For 2007 standards and keeping in mind that the person didn't even know what the final product would look like, it was very well made. It was the first truly high quality hoax I had ever experienced, and considering that Mario Galaxy is my favorite Mario game, it drove me nuts.

To add on to the Pikablu hoax, the rumors and subsequent hoaxes of Pikablu being a water type evolution of Pikachu were only fueled by a mistranslation of dialog with a scientist in Cinnabar Island after you trade him a Raichu for an Electrode. Talking to him again after the trade, he says something along the lines of "The RAICHU you traded me evolved!" This was brought to attention not too long before the first movie came out and Maril was featured in the Pikachu's Vacation short.

Minor correction on club penguin; it was actually still like 10x profitable to run Club penguin, but that 10 times multiplier was on a couple thousand dollars, and Disney was not happy only making a little money. They shut it down to force players onto the new mobile version with way more abusive microtransactions to try and make bank on their existing players. Then the game went bust because it was a worse copy of club penguin and no one liked it. Just wanted to correct that, the multiple club penguin fan servers that are still up prove the popularity was still there. (Also, coincidentally, they are also the reason every MMO suddenly announced they were opening up official vanilla servers in 2019-2020, because Disney tried to sue them for copyright infringement by preserving the game they game they shut down and made completely unavailable... *And Lost.* Setting the precedent that gamers were now allowed to play and maintain online games that were no longer available from the developers. Meaning developers couldn't just send a threatening email to fan servers anymore, and if they wanted to keep their players on their servers and paying for their games, they would need to actually offer the game to play. So yea, Club penguin is the reason WoW classic became a thing. Club penguin made gamers less oppressed. The more you know.) Also how did you miss the joke of showing a penguin casting a spell, magic was very much a thing in club penguin, they fought to the death on top of volcanos over there. like come on. (And on a last note, I can't believe you slid that fake fact in with the rest, that was genius on this day.
