Dedicated to my late older sister. I love you.
Joshua Graham is a character I look fondly upon. In the end, he showcases a glimmer of hope in even the most horrific circumstances of being burned alive. There is light in the darkness, we know this to be true. You always have family, and your family always has tribe

This video is made in honor of my late older sister. I dug into the Fallout: New Vegas voice registry & cut, spliced, merged, and mixed Joshua Graham to sound as though he's speaking a single coherent monologue not found in the game back in December. Took 6+ hours to get his voice intonation just right, although there's still inconsistencies. (Edit May 10th 2023: This wasn't made using an AI.) I don't even know what I'm doing anymore. I feel so lost in what I make. EDIT: Thank you all very kindly. I’m glad we all share the admiration of his gentle words presented here. Subscribe for more content, I plan to make more sentimental videos in the future. there you go, thats the point of Joshua. I believe his character is supposed to be a reflection on and a hard counter to the attitude of many "Christians" in America, and the world even. They talk about God's goodness, they pray for those who suffer, but they don't take it upon themselves to let God's goodness pour forth from their own hands. He fights for his home and these people who can't defend themselves. Perhaps he goes too far, and it is up to the player to rein him in, but he is nonetheless a man of action. A man who sees that something needs to be done and does not wait and beg for an invisible hand to do it.

What it means is "And the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not" which in my understanding just depends on what bible you read. In a last minute attempt we had to fire up the crane and move stuff around to the port side to balance the weight while we had water by our waist and the risk of everything just falling on top of us if the ship suddenly flipped around.

I’m a Mormon myself, and oftentimes I see us depicted inaccurately in media, and frankly that’s fine. But Joshua…jeez, man. I remember running into him in Vegas, and I don’t think I’ve ever met a character I can emphasize more with. So much of what he says I believe and is apart of my life, and everything about him seems so…I don’t know, heart touching? This is a character that isn’t real and has never existed, and yet I feel bad for him, admire him, understand him. In a lot of ways Joshua is who I hope to become, really. Someone who’s made mistakes and knows that, and is trying to repent for them. And yet at the same time doesn’t crush themselves with self doubt or hatred, that loves others and knows they love him. He even has the compassion to care for his enemies; I remember finding out that if you tell Joshua you’ll harm the Dead Horses, he first threatens you, but finishes with a warning about how murdering good people is bad for the soul, and how it’s the most important reason why you shouldn’t. It sounds awesome, but if you think about it, isn’t that some kind of compassion? By telling you it’s the most important reason, he sets aside his own threat and appreciation for the Dead Horses, and instead thinks about YOU. He doesn’t want you to harm yourself. Maybe he doesn’t want you to make the same mistakes he did when he helped Caesar.

The Followers of the Apocalypse, and Mormon missionaries were the two factions who brought food, aid and medicine to wasteland. One must have a capacity or even familiarity with evil to understand and speak against it. Not to support the actions of Joshua before his burning, but there is something more authentic and commanding about a man who has done evil, and suffered for it, asking without commanding for someone he encounters to be good. And something rewarding in saving him from his own potential relapse into evil, if only because we are all of us flawed. Man does not respect the naive or unexperienced, and for good reason. A man who has touched hell has more to speak of in matters of heaven, than one who has never seen or experienced either.

A couple years ago, April 30th, 2022, my stepfather suddenly passed away at three in the morning from a heart attack. A couple weeks went by, and while I was in my VoTech class (as this was still during high school when my stepdad had passed), I found this video in my recommended feed while I was looking for music to listen to while I worked. By the time the video ended when I first watched, I was on the verge of tears because of how close to home that it really hit. A couple of days ago...and now, at the time I'm writing up this comment in hopes KZbin doesn't take it down (May 13th, 2024), I realize that Joshua reminds me a lot of my stepdad, which is probably why I connect with Joshua so positively. In fact...sometimes when I listen to this video, out of the number of times I have since I found this video, I don't necessarily hear just Joshua Graham talking...sometimes I hear my stepdad saying all of these things to me, through Joshua's voice. So...for you, the creator of this video...thank you. And I wish you the best, wherever you may be right now. To everyone else...be there for your loved ones. Tell them you love them. Cherish the moments you have with them. Because you never know when they can be taken away from you. Much love.

I've done what you did many times, and when I've really needed it, what I've opened up to has been so on point, that it was essentially a two way conversation, much like how bumblebee (in transformers) takes audio clips to form his responses. With 31,000 verses in the Bible, opening up to the one that is the inspiration for this video could just be a coincidence. But I prefer to call such things divine winks. 😉

I love how when you really get down to it, the one behind the dreaded legend of the Burned Man - the fallen champion of the Caesar - was just a simple guy trying to build something positive and stable in a world spiraling into darkness. He was the kind of caring, devout man that once might have been a friend and a teacher to everyone in his community. Not really a killer by nature; just someone who was pushed too far too many times, and finally decided he'd had enough.

He helped me out so much when my wife left me and he was the one person who would sit there and listen to my troubles. I miss him so much and I havent been able to cry in a couple years because of trauma. And this video just brought me to tears thinking about him. I'm not a very religious person. But once, I have lost everything, this late Quarantine actually. All my friends, all the people I cared about, and the only person that I loved, left me. I can't tell my family all the things that I've been through that time, I'm a different person when I'm with them, why you may ask, because I don't them to Worry about Me. Time flied I began to realize things and I lost hope, in the face of fear I built hatred, I told myself that no one is there to help me, and no one will feel sorry for me. But then I prayed, I asked for his guidance and he helped me, God helped me. Its a long Quarantine being alone but I survived, Thank God. I made it to my friends the friends who left me, I wanted to get my revenge but I know God would not like it, maybe he did it for me so I embraced it. Its a long story but these are the only things that I can say. Joshua was right, In the end, there is a Light in the Darkness. God be with you.

What really caught me about Joshua was how he never spoke with judgment on those who couldn’t defend themselves, he didn’t look at those he was protecting as “weak” he looked at their circumstances and understood why they do not fair well, and why he can help them. A man who struggles with his own personal demons every day, and chooses the hard path and doesn’t run from his sins. That to me is why he doesn’t judge others, because he’s not in denial of his sins, he knows they are a part of him just like everyone else has their own battles with sin.

Religion in the end teaches us harmony as everything around is the creation of the omnipotent being or beings. Even if we dont believe in their existence its just comfy to know that you are existing and connected to everything around you, and it includes all the good things even if they are sunk in the depths of the bad ones. This mindset can exist without dogmas and names and even without realizition of one who follows it.

Spoiler warning: As someone who found God through pain and despair, Honest Hearts broke me. The ending especially. My first time playing it, I chose to fight rather than flee, but convinced Joshua to spare Salt-Upon-Wounds. I related so much to how Daniel wanted to preserve the Sorrows' innocence. I was robbed of mine and wanted nothing more than to mentor the younger generation to find peace amongst themselves. However, I too grew up in a world where fighting was the only way to ensure that others would stop taking from you and threatening you. It made me lose my faith, but after all the fighting, I experienced incomprehensible miracles. I felt the warmth and love of the creator. It purged me like fire. Ironically, I believe it's what will save me from the fire come judgement. Now I tell all those that seek my advice to have a warrior spirit, but a heart of gold. God isn't fake just because some magical force doesn't reach down and solve all of our problems and prevent tragedy. It's our responsibility to use what God gave us to make the world a better place. So, my brothers and sisters, there is much work to be done.

However despite all this, they have always been there for me. All those people I met and my family as well. Every time I go out, I go out saddened, depressed and uncertain. But when I am with them, they always bring a smile on my face. I forget my troubles for all those precious minutes I am not alone and do see the light in the darkness. I feel extremely overwhelmed by life, both positively and negatively. But the truth is I am not alone. Neither are you. We will make it. Love is the true most powerful feeling, that ever existed. And love doesn't need to come from a girlfriend or a boyfriend! It can come from the smallest act of kindness from absolutely anyone. And that is what one never forgets. Be kind to each other. Listening to this helped me during moments of uncertainty and loneliness when I was studying away from home, in times when world tensions were starting to escalate and I saw mi efforts and everything I had been working so hard to position myself there start to vanish because of things I had no control over. I’ve since left this country and returned home, and though for a long time I lived with the regret of never finishing my studies in this university, I’ve come to make peace with my situation and experiences I lived. Loneliness in Russia brought me closer to my Catholic faith since the first year away from home, when a Polish church in Saint Petersburg near Spas na Krovi opened it’s doors to me, and this video when I had to start all over again in Moscow. Thank you

I’m a burn victim and I really relate to this. I caught myself on fire and had 3rd degree burns on 30 percent of my body and it took a long time to recover. I honestly would of burned to death if I hadn’t of stuck my hands through my burning shirt to tear it off. It’s weird I didn’t even feel pain until after it was over and I was looking at my hands. My fingernails were black and there was open wounds like being nailed to a cross on my palms. I didn’t even realize my back had 3rd degree burns until the EMT’s got there because my nerves were burned. 4 months of recovery and 3 skin grafts later and now I’m mostly okay besides some nerve pain. I’m just lucky that it was only my back and hands

I've been listening to this video for over a year now, back then I was depressed thinking I wasn't going anywhere in life. I relapsed and decided to just push to be happier, and it worked. Now, a year later, I'm 31, fighting stage 4 pancreatic cancer. I watched my parents both cry and breakdown, my sister calling me her baby brother and asking why she had to watch me suffer, as well as many friends grieving for me. I was close to death since it had spread to my liver and there were severe lesions and whatnot. However...I made it. Its been almost 7 months, I finish my last 2 chemo treatments, and the tumor that killed my pancreas which was 7 cm, the size of a peach, has now been reduced to scar tissue. When my oncologist told me, her and her staff said I was one of the toughest most humble patients they ever treated, and that I would be able to live a nice long comfortable life, even though I can never work again. My coworkers and boss have been constantly checking on me...even as far as raising almost 1k just for me to have. I cried and felt so loved and appreciated not just for my hard work, but for the kindness I gave to everyone. I'm still battling depression, and my mom has watched and heard me cry asking why did this have to happen. She reminded me that I survived, that I can help others fight who didn't get to have others to support them like what I had. And that's what I wanna do with my life. I wanna be a shoulder and strength for those who have no one who are fighting chronic illnesses like me. No one should have to fight alone, ever. Hearing Graham say "The fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me" reminds me of how hard I've been fighting without even realizing it. I beat one of the deadliest cancers, and now, as my mother has reminded me, my life is meant for a new path. I hope that when you read this, that you do not feel sorry for me, but that you find the strength deep within you to keep fighting, no matter how dark it gets, that you will find the light, and if not, I will come to you with fire to help illuminate the way with you, and I will call you my friend. This world is very cruel, but it doesn't mean we have to give in to its cruelty. You are stronger than that, and I believe in you. -Matthew

Dont grieve, as your brother will be sad when be sees you like that but rather continue to do good deeds, to help this world. One more thing, if he is in better place, why go feel sad? One that taught me how many, people and animals alike, are desperate for affection. A dog whose euthanasia caused me to cry like a child thirteen times in one day. I loved my dog. When I think back on him, I feel pain. I cannot imagine his face without pain. I imagine you feel the same. Hold on to the pain. But don't let it define you. Allow your heart to feel joy. It will be painful. But it is necessary to heal.

I picture Joshua seeing you sitting there, broken, lost, and heartbroken, lost in a moment of darkness, and deep within his searing, tortured body, his heart throbs with sympathy. He just comes to sit next to you, his Bible in his hand, and starts saying this. Maybe, as much as it agonizes him to do so, he puts his other bandaged hand on your shoulder to give it a reassuring squeeze. Finally, knowing he has said what he can, he stands up, gripping his cherished bible, and with a parting "God be with you" he leaves to attend to other things.

Joshua Graham presents a very accurate, though often misunderstood, portrait of christianity. As you'll find in John 14, 15 and 16, the mission of Jesus Christ isn't to say that if you follow him, life will be good and easy. In fact it's the complete opposite, he promises that life will be difficult, even more so if you take up your cross and follow him. But what he does promise is meaning, it's the light in the darkness, it's the hope that not a single moment of suffering, of your suffering, will be in vain... Without that hope, life becomes mere luck of the draw. If it goes well, carry on, if it goes badly, yield. Thing is, none of us ever want to yield, and when our loved ones do they take a piece of our soul with them. But if life is suffering and if there's no ultimate meaning to any of it, why continue to exist? If you are suffering so much, and the end goal is the same either way, why not just pack it in and go gentle into that good night? The suffering of the world is what leads most people to abandon God, and in that you're certainly not alone. But a world without God isn't a world without suffering, it's just a world where suffering doesn't matter.

I stopped playing the game after I took the priest on his vision quest, only for him to leave with no answers and for everything in his life to still be a charade. When you pigeonhole characters into positions where they never change, and gain no convictions or do not build a foundation for existing convictions...they feel empty. It is a shame they don't make games like they used to.

They won’t. But there is comfort in knowing that among all the empty words, and pointless stories, there is one familiar light to return to, no matter when.

The line "some days are harder than others but I must try" really resonates with me. More people need to try even if everything seems inevitable or impossible, try to do something because doing nothing is allowing the inevitable to be the inevitable. Be that light in the dark.

I love that Graham message isn't about the fundamentalism of christianism, or how everything is inpure and Jesus will erase everything bad like most of the christian comically stereotypes. His message is about hope, forgiveness, and love of those who you are close and from a God who isn't vengeful, but kind and caring.

@Hunter Smith Yes, but the erasing part is what gives. Jesus erases the sin eith love, not hate.

Tis how I see God, accepting of most things and understanding a being who wants peace, order and freedom. That's just my interpretation I believe that a lot of people forced their beliefs into the Bible tbh
