the price of magnets adds up, BUT... in my mind, its what makes having dungeon tiles worthwhile. Having to clip together beforehand makes the tiles not so fun, but with Magnets, they are great. and what he says about low walls is correct. I have gone mostly thingiverse, openlock with magnets.

Printing in black so you don't worry about scratching the paint is easily alleviated by just spraying your painted terrain with a clear coat when you're done painting them. Use gloss to make dank dungeons look wet, matte to keep wood buildings looking dry and cozy. I've been doing that to minis and terrain for decades, absolutely beat the hell out of them and never a single scratch.

The low walls of the True Tiles system is meant to allow for other clip on wall pieces that the creator has tutorials on how to build. Worth checking out what clip-on doodads he has created on his channel.

Having followed the creator for a long time, I'm more likely to be on-board with True Tiles, knowing the design philosophy behind it. I need to see if TT has options for tall walls, though, for the occasional multi-level setup.

The reason for the dragonlock/rampage full height walls of 2 inches is to allow for multi level setups. I guess not so much for dungeons but if doing buildings, maybe a castle or watchtower you can build each level, stack them and add or remove as you move through them.

I use foam dividers for extra support, and the last campaign that I did had a 5 tier dungeon where I could peel away the layers as the party got further in. For lore, they received a map of the first level, and subsequent maps were either found, or I used a foam sheet to hide areas they hadn't mapped yet.

One of the bonuses of truetiles is the 1.25" grid makes it so your minis are less tightly packed and easier to move. Most minis don't stay over top of their 1"x1" base, they're usually sticking cloaks or weapons over the edges in 1 or more directions.

I don't know why people don't use 1.25"... if you're spending all this time and money for the best dungeon tiles possible, why do you want to deal with pieces always knocking in to each other and getting tangled up? And you cant even see the tiles that are occupied with 1". Seems like a total no-brainer to me but idk

Thanks for the video. I tested many of the systems you discussed. For me, the most versatile system is true tiles by far. The low walls allow everyone around the table to see the board. The multitude of clips makes for great doors, double doors, traps, secret doors, etc. The half clip magnetic barrel system is really easy to put together and much less expensive than the ball magnets. Storage is easier as well. The two most common tiles are the no wall and single wall. The single wall tiles lay face to face for easy storage. I have printed over 100 tiles and they store easily and neatly in small amazon shipping boxes.

Something to keep in mind, you can scale 3d prints in the slicer so it wouldn't be too hard to scale the printable scenery tiles to 1-1/4 or even 1-1/2 squares, just scale the clips up as well. They also make magnetic clip adapters so you can use the same time with magnets or clips as needed.

Wyloch, the creator of True Tiles, based it on his method for homemade dungeon tiles. He has a large selection of videos about making tiles and terrain. The very first video gives his philosophy and either that or the second gives exact measurements for what he is working with. The 3D printed tile line he made is all based on that earlier design.

Love the video. Been playing D&D for 41 years??? Just missed its debut. I teach everyone that plays with my group how to draw out your own dungeons and I've played with groups all over the world. I have been a player in a 200 player adventure as well as having 10+ ppl playing more times than I can count. I'm new to 3d printing so this helps with options. as one of my best dungeon floors has 711 rooms in it, no hallways, seeing the different tiles side by side helps me decide what might work for me. Sadly I'm thinking I might have to make my own system. The small wall debate is kind of funny to me, as for some reason D&D players love to argue line of sight and believe it or not full walls cut way down on that. Great vid, love your back ground in it.

Mystic Realms has a tile system using the open lock connector. What makes the system great in my opinion is that the tile top connects to the base via press fit. It means that you only need to print a certain number of bases but can have as many different tops as you want. Currently there is not much variety though. I’ve been toying around with using his tile tops on Dragon Rests bases to get the best of both worlds

the heroquest map was created during a time when the square grids were considered 10' across not 5'. so you need to take that into consideration with your maps. Basically double the needed squares.

Great info, but time for an update for new comers in 2023 👶. That beep at 16:02 had me checking my Wash and Cure station. Had to play it a second time to make sure it was in the video! As an "olde tyme" DM (starting circa 1978 with Traveller), I never used game maps as gospel, but rather as design guidance. Since we were all playing physically together, and by the same settings, it always worked. But, we did use things like corrugated box walls with magic marker scenery to create the "environment".

Obviously I get that the comparison was printable tiles but the Warlock Tiles by WizKids (in my opinion) do a great job of addressing the problem of wall footprints. They use Openlock style walls for exterior walls but have thinner walls on metal tabs that fit between floor sections for interior walls.

It would be enough to make the tiles 1.25" wide, the walls 0.25" wide, and offset the walls 0.125" outside the tile. At the same time, leave 0.125 inches flat around each tile. Then the walls would be located half on one, half on an adjacent tile. It would be possible to build even a narrow corridor one inch wide, with walls on both sides.

Not sure why none of them have magnetic connectors on top in the intersection between squares. Seems like the easy spot to connect internal walls. Make the squares slightly bigger and centre the walls on them 1/2" thick walls...1-1/4" squares, etc. Could centre magnetic columns on them too. Then outer walls that magnetize to the outside squares. Easy. Could make adjustable buildings and roofs too.

One other thing that's really important to me: which of these is fully compatible with Dwarven Forge? It's still THE terrain standard for people with a little less time on their hands who want great scenery, but it's very expensive, so adding to it with 3D-printed scenery always is a great option.

I can to the same conclusions you did with TrueTiles being the best for a HeroQuest board. I modified the clips that come with it to work with clip on walls. I have videos showing how it works. I got into 3D printing after watching your videos, and thats what lead to the Heroquest 3D board project I did.

I also went with the True Tiles and love them. If you are a DM that uses premade campaigns then this is the best to recreate maps exactly, if you are a DM that makes up your own dungeons than choose the tiles you like the most because it wont matter :)

Yes, in the video I show the Printable Scenery stuff printed at 125% to create 1.25" squares. The bigger issue is dealing with the wall spaces.

Are there any collections of D&D style maps which do account for the extra half tile width walls? I have a hefty OpenLock collection but I'm having trouble finding premade dungeon maps for inspiration that don't have this "walls as thick as paper" problem.

I don't know of any publishers that specifically make maps that take the wider walls into account. I've played mostly the published D&D modules for 5th edition and just fudged the map and added more tiles to accommodate the walls. Like I mentioned in the video, it really doesn't matter for D&D since it isn't super tactical. I've found as long as you approximate the room size, you are fine.

No, I haven't. But I do know that Warlock doesn't have single square pieces which is a requirement if you want to recreate the HeroQuest board exactly. Otherwise, I've seen other boards that use the 2x2 base systems and have fudged a little to adapt to HeroQuest. I think so because it is super flexible and for $9, one of the cheapest options for a ridiculous amount of files. I like how you can configure any room and print it as one to lessen setup time. I just did a video on Dungeon Blocks, which is also a good system but takes a lot more filament to print and is harder to customize for fast setup.

why not just get the stl files then pull them in to a program to change them back in to a step file or other file type that you can edit and make more types of tiles with corners? Also too open forge has a github that has the master file where it has everything in it.

Yes, when I combined the two walls to make the corner, you can't fit a clip in the corner where the walls meet. So I put magnets in both the far ends. Even though only one magnet is connecting to the floor, it is still strong enough to hold the piece there.

I've never used it but the concept seems cool. The ability to create your layout and print exactly what you need is a good concept. I still like how Dragon Rest's 1.5" tile is the most versatile with the walls.

Can you measure one of the squares? It should be close to 1" on one side (or about 25mm). Just one of the squares, not the set of 4.

I know this is an old post, but for the benefit of new viewers: I actually get pretty good terrain quality out of my regular Creality Ender 3. You just have to play with the settings a little in the slicer program. The Ender 3 has a z-axis that is based on a 0.8 rotation step, so keeping your layers as either multiples of 0.8 or of the half-step of 0.4 actually helps because it's easier for the machine to achieve accurate z-motion. I found 0.8 layer height gives really clean detail on most terrain, but you can go to 0.4 layer height for small stuff. For tiles and walls though I usually print at a 1.6 layer height or 2.0 layer height for speed, otherwise it takes forever to print, and simple shapes with limited detail don't need the same level of layer control to look decent after painting. On items with very straight surfaces, I will even go to 2.4 layer height when churning out big things like castle walls or building frames. Very detailed scatter that is tiny or thin, like candelabras, goes on my Photon though, because while FDM is a lot cheaper to print and more durable if dropped in a storage bin, you just can't quite achieve the same ultrafine details as you can get in resin. If you watch for sales, you can get a Photon Zero for about $100. It's has a pretty small build plate, especially compared to my Ender 3, but does a super job on minis and those itty bitty scatter pieces.

Typically most Patreon accounts limit when you can get the files but with Dragon's Rest, you gain access to all the files which you can download onto your computer. Ian should really charge more because $6 is a steal for all those files, which is why I encourage patrons to support him for a couple months and not just one.

Really depends on what you want out of the options from Printable Scenery--do you want half-height walls or full? Curved walls? Styles? Yes, you can magnetize the clip but it requires two barrel magnets into each clip which will require a LOT of work. I would opt to just use the clips at that point, or only magnetize some of them. I would also meld pieces together so the tiles match with Dungeoneers, that way you are reducing the number of clips you need to use.

@@gaminggeek241 ok so what I might do then is start printing the starter set. I guess I can then re print just tiles and Walls to extend the footprint as ai wish. As you say I will then use mostly clips and magnetise some parts. I also took a look and Dragon Rest but just didn’t find any help guides to get started. @@njco78 Yeah, if you look at my video showcasing the Kraken tiles, you can see the ones I printed out to start off. Since the dungeon is randomly generated, if you draw a section you don't have, just redraw until you do and slowly build up your set. I would suggest starting off with printing 3 of each of the base rooms and hallways and then go from there.

You mean warping after or during the print? If after, you might want to add some layers to the tile. If you don't know how to do that, watch my video on how to use Microsoft 3D Builder to modify STL files.

No, you don't have to use black, especially if you have a coat of varnish to protect the paint.

It is possible and I've done it but you have to place the magnets into the plaster while it is still wet. You also have to pay attention to polarity whereas with ball magnets, you don't need to worry about it since they swivel in place.

There isn't a clip that has Openlock on one side and Dragon's Rest on the other. It would be possible though to create your own--check out my tutorial on how to use Microsoft 3D Builder, a free program that lets you modify and create STL files.

It does exist. I found it on thingiverse, and I'm pretty sure Fat Dragon Games actually released a version too to help folks integrate new purchases from their Dragonlock sets into existing tile collections. I think Devon Jones, the guy behind Openlock 2.0, also has a version.

What is the average time to print a wall or floor section?

I usually print a dozen walls at the same time and it takes about 8 hours on my Prusa MK3S printing at .2mm height and with 10% infill. Your mileage will vary based on your printer, settings, etc.

It’s unrealistic for walls to be that thin, so you deal with the realism of having the thickness of walls or deal with play mats

Another method is dropping the grid system and turning movement and ranges to measured distances and using facing rules. When it comes to using physical terrain you're never going to get a 1 for 1 from the maps in the books.

The only one I would add to this list is Dungeon Blocks, which I've made a few videos about. But my favorite is still Dragon's Rest because of the sheer number of options and how cheap it is compared to Dungeon Blocks.

Dude. The tile-size of a 3D-printable dungeon tile set is an irrelevant topic of discussion. You can easily re-size anything in your slicer before printing. so if we want OpenLock tiles to be 1.25" across, or 1.5" or 2" or whatever, we can adjust that in seconds. That literally defeats any concern of wall tiles not leaving enough room on the space.

Great video, but I do feel you're putting a little too much emphasis on measure-by-square systems like 'D&D'. I think the 'D&D' Level-based system is one of the most flawed rules systems out there, there's way better available - from 'RuneQuest: Glorantha' to 'HârnMaster', 'HERO System/Fantasy Hero', 'GURPS', 'Battlelords of the 23rd Century', 'Mutants & Masterminds' and so many other RPGs. Most of them allow you to measure by inch. Once you pull out a ruler, squares that measure more than the standard 1" become a problem...

Then at that point, you might as well use cardboard tiles or a digital map and forego 3D printing all together. The whole point of a 3D map is the walls. That's why I don't like the True Tiles system--not enough wall. But different strokes for different folks.
