The final part of Novosibirsk was hard on me. You finally get back to the train after a fast car run, and when Artyom turns to Miller to celebrate, Miller is already dead in the seat. Over the course of the game, Miller felt like a father figure. Shit hurt

I think it's because the notes and the load screens still convey his thoughts and perspective very well, but in-game it's more his actions and his sense of duty where he acts without comment or complaint as you press on with him. Even when faced with horror and the unknown, he doesn't quip or even show fear, even if he is clearly scared, but instead does what he thinks needs to be done and continues on,, no matter what.

Honestly, that small attention to detail about how Artyom, after 2033 and Last Light, still has Hunters dog tags, showing the importance and growth that Hunter had on Artyom to venture out of the station in the start of 2033.

He probably saved his life. If not for Hunter he would have stayed at the Exibition and most likely died if the Nosalies invaded and overrun the station (like they did at the Cursed Station). Instead he went on a journey to Polis and eventually joined the Spartan Order, becaming it's leader.

Metro is a game that I will always support. Exodus renewed my hopes that the devs want to return to the storytelling of 2033. There are many little stories left unnswered from the books and 2033 (submarines, tank village, cannibal tribe station, metro 2 tunnels) Alas we got to see them return as hints. Sams story and two colonels really shows how good this game can be. Though its surprising there was not a dlc for retrieving the snow plow. If we get another game. I suspect we will follow Sam to America. I'm curious to see more of this universe. Though I really believe the game should stay to the dark tunnels of the metro.

Disagree; Two entire games were focused on the Metro as well as the beginning part of the third game. At that point, it kinda gets old; Stick to the outside world for now, though the story WILL head back to the Metro eventually to take out the Invisible Watchers as the writers are clearly implying.

Fun fact: in the books ( which I guess are canon over the games ) the red line wins the war against the fourth Reich... When the fourth Reich has artyom captive they try to do a push to annex the theatre station but the red line launches a massive counter attack. Afterwards the red line troops move through lubyanka station and push towards pushinskaya station ( essentially the Nazis capital, because it's where they started first as a power ). They tried to block tunnels, the reds just pushed through, defences got overrun, units were being swarmed and so in an attempt to save themselves from a now inevitable defeat they flooded the line between Lubyanka and pushinskaya. Unfortunately for them however, this had the reverse effect they wanted. The red line troops were fine, the fourth Reich however, proceeded to have all three of their stations flooded and have to be abandoned essentially giving control of all three of them to the red line. So like military ways ( most of their soldiers either died in the flooding or were captured ) or governmental ways ( the fuhrer and his top leaders fled ) the fourth Reich has collapsed and no longer exists.

True, but at the same time I think it's more simply cultural wisdom andexpectance. There's a lot of stories about Russia starting war from Slavic countries because, well, the region's modern history has been smothered with oppression under the USSR and Russian control, and many countries have since wanted to make sure that their independence from Russia and a prevention of a return to anything close to a USSR type organization. It's a sad fact that the roots of stories like Metro are reflections on the blood-stained history of the region.

Edit: I remember hearing something from Last Light or 2033. But the civil war between the communist and fascist would be beneficial to the Metro. As it would kill lots of mouths to feed. The lack of/minimal HUD from the first game set a trend that the industry has largely taken note of for the better. Nothing takes me out of a game like having a bunch of stuff plastered all over it. Having stuff you carry actually be a hud replacement was a smart move in terms of design and it's something I adore when other games do. Make the knobs, buttons, and screens in a spaceship mean something. Instead of my character just knowing the time, give them a watch. Instead of them just knowing the layout of every area around them, give them a physical map to pull out. All those little details allow me to suck myself on further than if they were just put on the screen 24/7. It also give you more space to wander, explore, and actually focus on what's in front of you instead of staring at the HUD. Its something a lot of open world games still massively struggle with.

When playing through the trilogy and dlcs I liked to play through both the good and the bad endings, the English and the Russian versions, if possible, I’d wish more people knew about this series. It has this way of just gripping into your heart and not only involving you as a player, but as a reader, going through the games and collecting the journals let’s you discover who artyom is not just as a character, but a person who lives in this world.

I've read all three books multiple times. The first one is still my favorite. Played all three games multiple times as well and Metro Exodus is by far my favorite here. Even compared to the story of the books, Metro Exodus is my favorite. The time you can spend with your fellow Spartans on the train really draws you into the narrative and makes you care about them and that is great motivation for the gameplay for me. Great summary of the world of Metro! Enjoyed it a lot.

I think I has a complicated storyline, interesting characters, and historical and cultural connections that I didn't expect in a video game. I do think the handling might have been a bit clunky. I love the metro games. I’ve played through them all and exodus was by far my favorite. I got the good ending my first play through completely by accident and due to the way the game tells stories and portrays these characters to you, that shit hurt a bit. I got pretty attached to Miller and I’ll admit that this is one of those rare games that made me shed a tear for a character. A damn good series and a fantastic video summarizing them.

@@beencomfy Honestly, nah. Having to successfully navigate gameplay to move the story along is not anything like watching a movie. One is choose your own adventure (maybe. if you're good at the game.) and the other is media I can enjoy without needing to perform tasks and solve puzzles just to find out the end of the damn story. I want to relax in my downtime, not fully start a hobby of working at maybe getting the "good ending" for a plot payoff of a game and then needing to DO IT ALL AGAIN for the other possible endings? Nope. As I said, being a gamer just isn't for me. 🤣

@@DarlingMissDarlingit's understandable, but I hope you also grasp that those of us who do enjoy it find it as relaxing as reading a book or watching a film. I actually liked the ideas of the Dark Ones, it made for a great story about people trying to survive against horrible odds, and what people are willing to do in order to do so. That the Spartan Order, though they are extremely good people and are a beacon for all of the metro, are still only people, and their endless mantra to protect what they love with tooth and claw only ends up killing untold numbers of those which only ever wished to be understood. I think one of the great things about metro is that it is extremely even handed and down to earth when it comes to depicting real people with all the ideals and flaws that they have. That there are many sides to the same story, and the thin line of understanding that can seperate the view between hero and murderer.

I liked some details in Metro as a whole like the critique of Russian belligerence (the games were made by the Ukrainians that made STALKER which happens to famously be set in the Pripyat exclusion zone; one of Russia’s *many* crimes against them), the stations being named and themed (and name for that theme) after old city states and the makeup and origin of mutant creatures and in Exodus specifically like the languages being spoken on the disabled jammer, the Dark Ones in Novosibirsk and the fact the Ark was never finished and the Eurasianist government died, which is poetic considering Russia’s extreme Kleptocracy and nihilism, and finally the Fallout style radio signals on the train with goofy music and characters talking about their settlements in places like Irkutsk; if you tune in before Dead City you can hear Kirill crying trying to call his dead dad. I shed a tear but it didn’t make me cry as much as Moscow and Novosibirsk Dead City apocalypse flashbacks in view of the missiles launching and other payloads detonating; The pilots of an airliner screaming “I don’t wanna die” in the arguably best one did it for me.
