So the upshot is it's very similar to Command & Conquer, and not similar at all to, well, Tempest. I'm thinking the rebirth of RTS is related to rising popularity of streaming. An easy way to generate hundreds of hours of streaming content is to play an RTS. If you're good you don't even have to concentrate on the game that much, and you can interact with the chat etc. Plus there's no complicated plot to follow so people can join you mid-game without getting confused.

If it truly were a C&C remaster (or at least truly inspired by C&C), it'd have no pop-cap and at least the option for proper controls like Dune 2/D2k/E:BfD, TibDawn/TibSun/TibWars/TibTwi, RA1/RA2/RA3. Even Tiberium Twilight, unarguably the worst C&C on PC, had the option for proper LMB-only orders without the switcheroo-jank Blizzard introduced and the industry stupidly copied.
