Description Source:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempest_...
Tempest is a 1981 arcade game by Atari Inc., originally designed and programmed by Dave Theurer. The game is a tube shooter, a type of shoot 'em up where the environment is fixed and viewed from a three-dimensional perspective.
It was fairly popular and had several ports and sequels. The game is also notable for being one of the first video games with a selectable level of difficulty (determined by the initial starting level).
Gameplay:
The objective of Tempest is to survive as long as possible and score as many points as possible by clearing the screen of enemies that have landed on the playing field. The game takes place in a closed tube or open field which is viewed from one end and is divided into a dozen or more segments or lanes. The player controls a claw-shaped spaceship that crawls along the near edge of the playfield, moving from segment to segment. This ship can rapid-fire shots down the tube, destroying any enemies within the same segment, and is also equipped with a Superzapper, which destroys all enemies currently on the playfield once per level. (A second use of the Superzapper in a level destroys one random enemy.)
Enemies swirl around at the far end of the playfield, then enter the playfield and move toward the player. There are multiple types of enemy, each of which has different behavior. At higher levels, some enemies leave a spike in the middle of the lane as they travel toward the player; a spike can destroy the player's ship when the player warps out to the next playfield. Other enemies travel to the player end of the playfield and then flip from lane to lane, killing the player if they move to the lane that the player is on; firing while the enemy is changing from an adjacent lane kills this type of enemy. When all enemies in a level are destroyed or reach the near end of the playfield, the player "warps" to the next level by traveling down the playfield. As the player warps to the next level, he must avoid or shoot away any spikes. The player loses a ship when an enemy comes into contact with their ship, shoots it or otherwise destroys it, or if the ship hits a spike while warping. At certain point thresholds, the player earns a new ship. The game is over when the enemies destroy all of the player's ships.
The game consists of sixteen screens with unique geometric shapes, some of which are closed tubes that allow the player to loop around, while others are open fields that have distinct left and right endpoints. When all sixteen screens have been played, the sequence repeats with a different color scheme and a higher difficulty level, including the invisible (black) levels (65--80). Each sequence of levels adds additional enemies that are faster and more deadly to the player's ship. The numbered levels stop incrementing after level 99 and a random one of the 16 variations will appear after successful completion of subsequent levels.

4:30 the start of a nice beat, most 2600 games lacked music but the sfx slowly made a beat. Centipede, missile command, boxing & defender 2 are the readily memorable. I'm sure there were many more but it was '92/93 the last time I used my 2600.

No footage of the warp levels from the Jaguar version is disappointing. Also workrs have been useful to indicate the year of release so that we judge contemporaneous versions against each other. The Amstrad version was very impressive if it came out the same time as the spectrum and (apalling) ST one.

As a former Amstrad 464 CPC owner, I'll say that version is the best 8 bit micro version around!! The Amiga version is extremely surprising like it's a prequel to the Jaguar version!!! It's that good and advanced!!! Typhoon 2001 does it SO right and it's a 5mb freeware title that can still hold it's commanding position (obligational download!). But to the most insane version is the mysterious NOUN Tempest 3000!!! That version is outright batsh!t nuts which levels that change, bend and alter themselves!!! Shame it's so hard to find or emulate...Then there the version not on here...Tempest 4000 which is so so but it has it's faults and some of them are pretty serious...So Tempest 3000 to me is the DEFINITIVE version because it's so hard to find....

Microsoft put out a Windows 3.1 version of Tempest in the early 90's, as part of a collection of early 80's Atari arcade games. I had that one, and I liked it quite a bit, and it also included a bit of history behind the games. Unfortunately, it no longer ran as well after I installed Windows 95.

I am actually not that fond of Jeff Minter's various psychedelic embellishments in the later versions; they detract from the stark, high-speed brutality of the basic game. How is the 5200 prototype that slick and fast, and why was it never released as an 8-bit computer game? (Maybe control depended on the analog joysticks?) It looks amazingly good. Most of these suffer from the lack of that wonderful heavy dial encoder on the arcade cabinet. But I had a 1990s Macintosh knockoff called Arashi that used the mouse and played really well.

AFAIK, there was no Windows 95 version, only the MS-DOS version and a separate CD with the soundtrack that you can use while you play to hear CD-quality music instead of the lousy FM music. BTW, the music tracks in the Saturn version are exactly in the same order as in the soundtrack CD, so if you happen to have a Saturn version CD, you can use it while you play the MS-DOS version.

What's "NUON"?
@HaloInverse
@HaloInverse 6 жыл бұрын
It was an attempt at an expanded DVD player/disk specification. The DVD players had a bunch of extra graphics/computing hardware in them that enabled things like better frame-by-frame/reverse playback, on-the-fly zoom/enhance, and running actual programs off of the DVD - e.g. Tempest 3000. It was marketed as a super-DVD-player that also played games, instead of a games console that also played DVDs. However, there weren't enough Nuon-enhanced DVDs made to encourage people to buy (expensive) Nuon players, and not enough people buying Nuon players to encourage movie/game publishers to support the Nuon format. It was also released around the same time as the XBox (original) and PS2 - both of which could play DVDs, had bigger game libraries at launch, and cost less. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuon_(DVD_technology)
