1:11:30 one neat detail that wasn’t mentioned. CAL HESITATED. He wanted to give Bode a second chance, try to end things peacefully still, but he saw the sparks from Bode’s blaster. Bode pulled the trigger without hesitation, and his blaster was just broken so it didn’t happen. You even see Bode realize that Cal hesitated, and he had a look that said “I’m sorry.” But Cal realized that Bode was too far gone. So, he did what was necessary and ended Bode there.

Just a little precision: we are seeing Cere's fight against Vader through Cal's eyes. It's an excellent little detail. First time i played it, i was wondering why after dealing the killing blow, why was Vader walking into a wall, and how does the room go from being on fire to smouldering in a matter of seconds. Blew my mind when someone pointed it out for me. It looks like Vader's hobbled off and walked into a wall because we were reliving everything Cere went through - after losing & being mortally wounded, she sorta forgot about him and care where he was going (obvs not towards the Mantis but i digress)

It’s especially beautiful and tragic considering the fact that Greez seemed almost *more* torn up about Cere than Cal, or at least just as torn up. Which makes sense to me. The way Greez interacts with Cere, and the age gap that we can deduce (based off physical appearance alone sadly, there’s no other way to really tell. We just know Greez was already either middle aged or a bit older in FO) implies a semi Father-daughter/sibling dynamic between Greez and Cere. And the way he talks to Cal is like his broody grandson who doesn’t show his mother enough love. (Seriously the way he’s like “It’s about time you payed that woman a visit” is such a “Goddamnit show my daughter some love, you brat” grandpa kinda talk) And so despite all the pain Greez is feeling, he is also still conscious about Cal’s emotions and almost seemed to be *expecting* Cal to try and blame himself. So the second Cal tries, he shuts it down instantly. Because the last thing he’s going to let happen after losing Cere is to lose Cal to his own emotions.

The Bode plot twist was one of the best ones I can remember in recent memory. The entire game, it seemed like he was being set up to be the side character that gets killed by the main villain before the big final battle. He seems to be a good guy, he’s a dad, he’s bros with Cal…. Then, Respawn turns all these hints at Bode being the sacrifice character and turns them into compelling reasons that he would choose to betray Cal. Drop on top of that he was also a Jedi that escaped Order 66, my jaw was truly on the ground and I felt the betrayal just as much as Cal did.

It always surprises me when people say that they like the story of Fallen Order better than Survivor. I like them both but Fallen Order was basically just a really long fetch quest with a loveable cast of characters. Survivor focuses more internally on Cal and his journey with the Force, and it throws some pretty good surprise twists along the way while working off the lore of the High Republic. And it ends with a strongly personal conflict that hits hard not only because we're invested in the contention between Bode and Cal, but because it explores the idea of a lost person finding their way in the world when everything that made them who they are is gone. Cal isn't given any choice in growing up; he's thrust right into a position of responsibility that I'm sure he doesn't want and isn't ready for. But he accepts it anyway and does his best. It's such a strong narrative through line that I can't help but sing its praises over Fallen Order. Either way, they're both great games in a terrific franchise. Hopefully the next game launches free of bugs so PC players won't hate on it 😅

I can see why some prefer the story to Fallen Order. Yes Fallen Order is a fetch quest but I think the simplicity of the story is what helps quickly endear us to characters like Cal, Cere, Greez and BD-1 as we meet them for the first time. It has that swash-buckling element that also exists in A New Hope. Whereas Survivor borrows Elements from Empire. In that way, I imagine there will be alot of Jedi 3 (probably Jedi: Legacy) that will borrow much of Return of the Jedi.
@Drifter-while-hungry Жыл бұрын
I think the reason I like fallen orders story better is the villains, Dagan is just “TANALORR IS MINE” the whole time, and I didn’t like that, and bode, while I get he’s a good character, I just don’t like the twist villain trope, and I like villains who are a antagonist the whole way through, like trilla, who’s story I find very interesting with her being a padawan who was sold out by her master, tortured a lot by the empire until she succumbed to the dark side and hated her master for her whole life until her final moments when she was struck down by darth Vader

We want everyone to be safe from the empire, including you, including your daughter. We all made it to Tanelor. We can all protect her. Growing up with no family sucks, just ask Merrin, or me. Kata is begging you to surrender. There's literally no reason you need to die here. Well, I guess, thanks for reminding me not to let the dark side cloud my judgement so terribly. But, ya know, I have Merrin for that, didn't really need your help in that regard. Daddy Cal, mommy Merrin, and uncle Greez will take good care of Kata, I promise. @@trav_estyokay I get this critique but also we’ve seen time and time again how the empire is seemingly infinite, and for two Jedi who’ve lost EVERYTHING to the Empire and it’s reach, I don’t blame Bode at all. They wanted to make Tanalorr the new HOME BASE for the Hidden Path, the biggest hope that the Jedi Order could be brought back. You know the SECOND the Hidden Path started growing the Empire would catch wind of it and do stop at nothing to find it and break it. Would it have taken a while for the Empire to get there? Yes. Was there a chance(a small one imo) that the Empire could NEVER find it? Yes. But as a father, as well as someone who has seen firsthand how ruthless and powerful the Empire is… Bode’s actions make perfect sense to me.

12:51, Even in the opener, continued theme of the danger of falling to the Dark Side is also shown, as Cal gives into the temptation to avenge his crewmates rather than salvage his remaining ones and gets separated from them. With every lost ally, ever failed mission and every betrayal, Cal lets more and more of his emotions radiate out into the Force and leave him vulnerable to being driven mad by his pain and fear of loss as Dagan and Bode were. It’s interesting that Cal managed to let go of his fear of being unworthy to be a Jedi due to being unable to help his master, only to trade it for the fear of losing everything and everyone to the Empire, misleading himself into believing fighting them means he’s conquering that fear while his use of the Dark Side and increased cruelty only proves his insecurity as he succumbs to the temptation of power to hide from his fears. In all honesty, practically every Dark Side villain in this game and it’s predecessor can represent each of the ways Cal could fall to the Dark Side. From being captured and tortured into an Inquistor like Trilla and Masana, to becoming so disillusioned by the Jedi’s failures and so desperate to survive that he would be willing to search for power anywhere like Malicos, to getting lost in his own obsession with defeating the Empire as Dagan obsessed over Tanalorr and most damningly, being driven mad by the fear of losing his loved ones and his existing grief over those he’s already lost like Bode. Even when the story is over, the danger of Cal losing everything, including himself, hangs over him. However, this uncertainty is perfect in making Cal more complex, as even with all his development, all his strength, he still has more to grow and even further to fall, especially if any of his allies, especially Merrin, are endangered or killed in the future. 1:01:29, It’s also interesting to note how Vader perceives power in the Force as something to be gained, while Cere perceives it as something that is already there but obscured by distracting emotions like fear. It’s not surprising due to how Anakin has usually found validation in external sources like his friends, loved ones, the Jedi, the Republic turned Empire and, of course, his power and status, which is why he was so traumatized and weakened when much of these things were lost to him and both his physical and mental injuries stunted his potential. Cere’s desire to rebuild the Jedi Order, her faith in their beliefs, and experiences with the Mantis Crew (all internal sources of validation that couldn’t so easily be stripped away) gave her the will to keep fighting despite her losses and failures and ultimately conquer her fear and shame, restoring her power even greater than it was before just like Cal did.

The first tip-off that Bode may have been the twist was in the escape from Coruscant. The "I'll draw some away while you all escape" would be an easy platform to simply send a transmission to identify himself as an ISB plant (assuming they didn't already know). The final hit, besides the obvious "I'm going to make a solo call to my daughter while everyone else relaxes), was while en route to Dagan. I actually caught myself saying aloud "y'know, we've not seen much from the Empire in the past few hours--just a lot of Raider activity (including fight with Rayvis)--wonder when that's coming back." Might not have been the most subtle betrayal, but still well done, for what it was. Felt every minute of it. As for the look I stuck with: the bomber jacket with scoundrel pants and the outrider shirt. I ran gunslinger from the moment I got it, and the weatherworn look with the devil-may-care attitude Cal had from time to time sold me on it. Changed the colors to match every biome/locale I was in for personal immersion.

I remember thinking there was very little opposition from The Empire as well. It seemed so odd to me that they wouldn't send an Inquisitor or a massive garrison to deal with him. When Bode's betrayal came around it made so much sense. Bode WANTED The Empire off our asses because we'd have never reached Tanalorr if they were.

Really glad you mentioned the blue lightsaber and how you changed it throughout your playthrough. I, for instance, kept the Jaro Tapal emitter the whole game as a tribute to my former master, integrated a little Cere and Cordova as the game progressed, then changed the blade colours up from blue to cyan (had to be a little different, ya know) before changing to green for a short time to represent my new relationship with Merrin and her green Nightsister magick. But once we get to the BIG turning point of the story, I actually used a white blade from then straight to the final boss battle to represent Cal's struggle with the Dark side. With the third and (based on the devs plan for it to be a trilogy) final game, I reckon it's going to be something far more personal, focusing on Cal's struggle not with restoring the Order or finding new Jedi, but with himself. His allegiance to the Force, his relationship with Merrin and Greez, how to cope around the daughter of a man he killed, and the shadow of the Empire looming over Koboh. It'll be a fight for his family, a fight for his light, and a fight for home. ...and maybe it's just me but I feel the next evolution of Force powers has to include Lightning or Choke in there so hell yeah, I'm all for watching Cal really struggle with the Light and Dark side of the Force and to have the story fully utilise Cameron Monaghan's acting range to show off his rage, fear, determination, passion, and sadness. But I digress. Great EGA video, my guy. Think you summed it up perfectly: 7/10 game with 10/10 Star Wars DNA.

What I really like in the game is how that venture into the darkness for Cal wasn't just a slip up that came around and went by after some loving talk but instead stayed and became just another tool to survive. Just like a blaster became a tool. You would think the game would use the OP power for a little bit and then move on from it but no. All the way to the end, Cal keeps that. Which makes me hope that the third game pushes further towards that direction. That Cal embraces the darkside more. Not to fall for it but rather to use it to help him further his goals. Which also would lean into maybe allowing some dark powers to come around and be used. Pull a Reverse Starkiller. Overall the game was great. I wished the part with Dagan was explored more, especially with him clashing with the empire and see more of the universe and what happened to it but otherwise its fairly great.

I don’t know if anyone else thought this, but the way that Vader and Cere held their sabers at each other was very reminiscent of how Vader and Obi Wan did on their last duel on the Death Star. It showed to me that Vader sees Cere on the same or similar level and as much as a threat to Vader as Obi Wan was to him on their last duel. It shows how much Cere has grown and how mad Vader is that she got away from him and is trying to rebuild the Jedi Order. The second the camera panned to Bode pointing the blaster at Cordova, I felt my heart skip a beat, then the amazing fight against Vader, experiencing what it’s like to be a Jedi who’s falling to the dark side, the final battle against Bode, etc, I loved it. Especially the dynamic of Cal struggling to uphold his Jedi teachings and dipping his toes into the dark side of the force. It’s not something that Star Wars games really touch on, and I personally really enjoyed seeing that being incorporated into the game. That and the characters themselves are pretty relatable and the dialogues between them are done really well, to the point that when Bode does betray the others, it really feels like you were actually betrayed by a friend.

As someone who actually loved the story as much or more than Fallen Order's, allow me to offer a counterpoint to a moment you didn't seem to like: When Merrin stopped Cal from executing Denvik, I think that DOES still relate to him leaving behind the Jedi. Cal is embracing his attachments and it's not turning him to the dark side like the Jedi say it would, it's keeping him from completely falling to it. He has realized that the Jedi were wrong about attachments, among other things, and I think that's really relevant to his arc in the game. Cal also doesn't fully abandon that anger either, for the rest of the game you keep the anger powered version of Force Slow and even embrace your anger again in the final fight against Bode. Cal is using his anger, but he has a support system to prevent him from becoming consumed by it.

Cordoba's pyre is there for BD-1. Bode's of course if for Kata. Cier's is for Cal. Each of these individuals are responsible for bringing those respective members to this group. While Merrin and Greez migrate between the 3 pyres and their members mourning them. As, despite their closeness to Cier especially, the two of them very much are portrayed as the stabilizing core of the Found Family theme of this story. They are why this group is able to weather the losses. Clunky as it may be, its decent thematic settup for the third game. Which will either be hyper depressing, or give us that Return of the Jedi style vibes conclusion. Given Survivor VERY much has those strong Empire Strikes Back tones.

I dont know what it was, but seeing the Cal we knew from the first game, died after Cere's death really hurt. I felt his anger in wanting to hunt Bode down. I think unless you fully invest into the story it definitely wont hit as hard, but if you do it breaks something in you, at least for me. I dont normally cry for games like i do movies, but something about Cere's death hurt so much, probably just the thought of losing something as close to a parent as Cal got resonated within me and after finishing the game I really wanted to just give up playing it as I know some things wont hit as hard. Also to add something that felt like Respawn was just kicking you while you were down, when you get the chest upgrade for the map theres one on Jedha that you don't get until after Cere dies, and its her lightsaber. I dont know why but somthing about the juxtaposition of her dying and then getting her lightsaber was just a straight kick in the teeth. Though I'm definitely 100%-ing my save file, GOTY material.

Playing on console, I was lucky with performance issues. The story could maybe have been a little longer with more nuance and consequences in the Dagan portion of the story, but I still loved the story. one of my favorite details was that Cere's lightsaber in this game came from (or was at least inspired by) a concept for Cal's saber in the first game. It was an early concept for a cal that was referred to as Boone Kastis, and it was attached to the end of a staff. The concept came from an artist named Gus Mendonca. I just realized that this story is very similar to ghost of tsushima since the both of them at the start followed a code and over time during the game and story they broke that code and now they are both just surviving.

1:07:12 This is why the jedis way is wildly imperfect, it basically makes you a robot, what's worse is that Cal doesn't remember that he said to Bode that he's just fighting to give Kata a better life, his unwavering devotion to the jedi code made him blind just as Tanalorr did to Dagan, until Cal relinquishes his attachment to the jedi code he's never gonna truly understand Bode and why he did what he did

I'm hoping we see more of the Grey Jedi stuff with Cal in his next game, as thats where it makes the most sense theme-wise. He's clearly struggling with the pull of the Dark Side by the end of this game, and it'd make sense that next game would have him learning how to control it, either by resisting or giving in, similar to Force Unleashed (or InFamous).

Grey Jedis don’t exist and SW fans need to understand that.

Hell yes. I know there's KOTOR but with the way Fallen Order and Survivor have set up Cal and his struggles with the Force, a third Star Wars game with inFamous karmic choices that help you decide the kind of Jedi (or Sith) you wanna be feels like a perfect way to round off his journey whilst also going the extra mile to make it personal to you.

i feel like cal keeping the “dark side” variant of the slow ability for the entire rest of the game after he first uses it was respawn’s way of showing us that this wasn’t just a hurdle in his path, but that he is going to learn how to embrace the darkness without truly falling from the path of the light

i love how in 22:46 the music disc says "who mourns for taris", callback to the old KOTOR games

Always happy to hear your experience with games! Your optimism and positivity even with games that launch as buggy as this one is so refreshing! Not enough people are talking about the great things respawn did with survivor and its nice to have a creator like you focus on them

Glad to hear someone else has a lot of fun using Synth Riders as a chance to actually dance instead of just hitting the notes!

I personally found this game to be better than Fallen Order in every way, including the story. I really liked the way the game from the get go, told you that this was going to be a bit darker experience than Fallen Order, with Cal killing the inquisitor and his crew getting killed at the start of the game. I also found the world to be much more alive in survivor compared to Fallen Order. Like there are many NPC's and an entire town on Koboh with people living in it that you can interact with (for the most part) which there kinda wasn't in Fallen Order.

I just finished the game this evening and absolutely loved the story! Was genuinely shocked at how large the game was too. And GAWD DAYUUUM the customisation is incredible ❤️

I could write this whole analysis on the story and the game play before I even start this video but all I'll say is Game of the year

I absolutely agree with the hands thing. I personally love the sound design of people hitting the floor in this game. That heavy thud is just so satisfying sounding to me.

I just hope that in the third one we will play as Vader against Cal. The confrontation is inevitable but I really dont want to 'beat' Vader. And playing against Cal with all the skills and improvements you made along the way, that COULD be epic

And it's entirely possible to "beat" Vader without actually trying to kill him and slamming into his wall of plot armor. Cere even had a WinCon when she buried him in debris - had she elected to cut and run while he was pinned down, she might've survived long enough for Cal to find her, and the two could've at least wounded Vader enough to knock him down and prevent him from attacking the Mantis as they took off.

The best thing about Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor is you don’t feel bored when exploring and playing main quests and the story is second to none, the best star wars content so far
