I harvested some water and dirt from the river and I eventually got some snails and scuds. I add them to my turtle tank so they can help clean stuff up. I have a viquarium for my baby turtle, so the rocks help to naturally filter the water. It is neat to watch the scuds swimming around in the rocks. Your videos are very helpful thank you!

I appreciate your comments! I bought scuds on Ebay - generally I don't like to buy or sell online...but in this case I was in rush to get them...so I bought them. Though, I had scuds in small amount previously that come with plants - I discard them back than. Also, you can pick scuds in freshwater ponds, lakes and rivers during warm season by picking plants (that's my preferable way of getting basically all critters for aquariums).

With a heavy heart I am sharing with you that all my gammarus died ... I got 5 of them 3 months ago when I bought some duck weed I loved those little guys. I kept them the same way you keep your nano aquariums.... just adding some foxtail, little fish food once a week and more dechlorinated water now and then. They were happy and thriving ...having babies like crazy... so I had some dozens ...it gave me so much joy. I was planning to release them after the covid lockdown (we are currently in stage 3 and 6 more weeks quarantine) , but ....Like 5 days ago I noticed like a protein foam layer (no bubbles) An experienced aquarist told me not to remove it because small shrimps eat that stuff ... 3 days later all my Gammarus died , just like that... I think that protein foam somehow killed them maybe they couldn't take air (though the fox tail REALLY provided them oxygen bubbles) . There were no fish there and no planaria in sight... water parameters were perfect ... Oh my, I miss them.
@4me4 жыл бұрын
I am sorry about your lost. I am wondering what is the source of this protein foam layer. Another thing...don't discard the nursery yet. There could be some alive gammarus - babies are too small to notice. I learn to keep all my fish and critters in at least two separate nurseries - just for accidents like this one. If one colony dies out the other one would be source for breeding a new colony. It also helps to interbreed every other generation or so between colonies to reduce chances of genetic diseases.

Are they threat for cherry shrimps (neocaridina) or baby neocaridinas?
@4me3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question! I've been working on a video on this matter. Scuds are very intrusive for one thing. Adult fish may enjoy hunting them for snacks. Though, adult scuds of about 1 cm size could attack fry and are not scared of my dwarf guppies (up to 2.5 cm). Left without food they may be a threat to baby shrimp, plants and everything alive in aquariums. Though again, if you have large fish feeding on them - it would keep scuds in hidden.
@mamamiabenjamia4 жыл бұрын
i've absolutely seen my scuds eating worms and smaller arthropods! by accident i mixed a few scuds into my cherry shrimp tank and was worried they'd eat the baby shrimp. luckily, they didn't do much damage or out compete my shrimp and it's been a long time since i spotted one in there.
@4me4 жыл бұрын
I have similar worries about gammarus getting along with cherry shrimp and even more with my dwarf guppies. I am not sure about baby cherry shrimp...also, I do not make serious attempts to breed them ;) But there could be more issues with gammarus in aquariums. I still have to figure out many things about them.

I was planing to give my Nerite snail his own tank, maybe I can put all the critters in there.

Dear Michael, Please Respond ❗❗❗ Nice videos on aquatic cultures you got there, I was especially taken by those on scuds. I just collected A LOT of those at a local lake and put them in a cycled aquarium. The gravel is medium to coarse and I have the whole back covered with plants. There are also 2 HOB filters on it which run only about 10 minutes per day. BUT… all the scuds hang out ON THE TOP in the corners of the tank and on the filter outlets or just zoom around the surface, they hardly ever go deeper into the water 😐 WHY❓ What is your thought on that❓ Not enough oxygen in the water❓ You don’t aerate your containers, right❓ Please give me your thoughts❗ Thanks
@4me4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don't use man-made filters, no air pumps (no aerate), no water changes in my aquariums. The oxygen level in aquarium with access to atmosphere should be fine for as long as the temperature is below 85F (30C). Scuds as any other critters are very well aware about fish (predators) that eat them. So, scuds may prefer to stay on plants or hide in gravel - which would make very hard for you and for fish to find them. I assume you change water in your aquarium effectively removing detritus (organic matter) from the bottom - scuds feed on it. If your remove detritus you leave nothing for scuds to find on the bottom. There could be many other reasons for scuds to stay up in the corner...You are the one who have the best chance to figure out what is going on there ;) All the best on your adventure!
@mariabarbara60204 жыл бұрын
@@4me Well, I don’t clean the algae off the glass, gravel and rocks, so I guess they do have a reason to go down there and there are no fish in the tank. The water conditions should be fine… especially since they do well in your containers without added co2. Maybe I just have to wait. I have a hunch that they are not used to this environment since I broke open a bulb of some kind of root lump where they were hiding in. Maybe they are just used to living in there if they were able to feed solemnly inside. Thanks for the reply anyway👍🙂 Keep on filming and good luck with your scuds❗
