This never gets old Michael , just pick an everyday container (a plastic juice container) that most people are familiar with that gets thrown into the recycling bin and make it into an aquarium using every day stuff some rocks, snails, seed shrimp, land moss, plant cutting and some fish . All for next to nothing.

Thank you for continuing to post. I've wanted to do a newt tank since childhood. Going old school hybrid Walstad method for next 30 long or 29 gallon just trying to figure out the terrestrial portion. How are your newts doing over winter? Do they require a dormit / hibernation period? Do you use a chiller over the summer or just keep the tank @ room temp? I know my Newts up here in Renns Co NY go deep in the ponds or gather around the spring heads (@ 55F) once the water temps get above 78 F. When the water temps is @ 60-70 F they are in the shallows then disappear as the temp rises.
@4me3 күн бұрын
I released my newts back to the place where I found them. Kept them for about one year. I pick them at the end of the September. Getting them into room temperature aquarium in the autumn definitely messed up their natural cycle. They start mating games almost right away. I did not want to use coolers for this tank for keeping them on the natural cycle. And by the end of the next Summer my whole family decide that it would be right to let them go back to nature. Taking care of them was great year long adventure my family and I enjoyed. I was planning to visit their natural place once a season - just to keep on observations. Though, my trips were interrupted by the limited access (bad snow storms messed up trails - some are still closed). Still have more videos about newts to work through 😉 Eastern newts certainly make one of the most interesting pets for aquariums. I may get them again in the coming years - will look for babies (Efts) to raise.

Id be curious just using orange springtails, the added springtails breed a lot faster than those. I was looking into breeding the orange ones. I breed the mixed culture of tropical pinks and whites and temperates. I use the charcoal method. It works great and I use one piece to feed on and then after a couple weeks i take that one and use as a seed and words very well.

Scuds seem to avoid two plants among all aquatic plants that I tried in my aquariums: Hornwort and Marimo moss balls. Scuds still chew them a bit, but would not go after those plants if any other plants / food available.

They can survive in chlorinated water?!?!?
@4me28 күн бұрын
I don't know for sure if they can survive staying in chlorinated water for prolongate time. Though, there are well known facts: it takes about 24 hours for chlorine to evaporate. The chlorine evaporates even faster at wormer temperatures and from the water body with larger water surface. The pond offers very large water surface. The fish may get sick initially, but apparently able to recover.

If you still check comments- I just tried this, and 80% of the scuds died overnight in a cup of the same water they were found in. I’m really at a loss Are scuds really sensitive to shock or still water?
@4meАй бұрын
I keep colony of scuds in 5 gallon jars in still water - they breed all year around without any trouble. I also have scuds in all my aquariums with fish. The smallest tank are 1.5 liter for many years. The population of scuds does not grow much in small tanks, but they live.

I came back to your question after good night rest and...well, one of the most common bad things that may happen in small tanks is high water temperature fluctuations. The oxygen level goes very low when water gets warmer - it is really matter of very short time for a cup. There is a chance your scuds may suffocated.
@cosmicclaxon29 күн бұрын
@ thanks for returning! That sounds plausible, especially in the winter. I’ve come across at least two posts with similar scud survival issues, and a lot of the comments say it’s an ammonia spike, but that just seems too fast. This is why I thought it might be worth commenting on your video

I think what killed them was the set up and mold releases gases, including carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds (mVOCs), and mycotoxins. Those little holes might not been enough ventilation. You got to consider species as well and what type of mold that species will eat. But if you got considerable amount of mold then you should clean that mold. If its growing faster than they can eat it then the gasses they give off will kill them. Balance!!
@4meАй бұрын
I agree with you. Balance means everything for real. When it comes to mold - I have 3 types of springtails and still have to see them eating / gathering on mold. They all gather on yeast and food flakes. There is one exception I observed with silver springtail going occasionally after particular type of mold, though it is not something they do consistently. Cleaning out mold at first sighting is really the most effective way of preventing it from spreading around in terrariums.
