Gimmicky or no, this was a fantastic insight into japan and a little known entry in the Goemon series. It's so cool how the tmnt jingle plays on it, that's gotta be a world first right there. Loving your Goemon series so far

I like how this episode nearly turned into an episode fo Solo Travel Blog. Was a nice video... a REAL nice video. A friend of mine had the TMNT LCD game like this one when we were kids. Stuff like this makes me want to get collecting them. Only have an old Donkey Kong II Game & Watch so far. That Goemon one seems surprisingly involved for an LCD game of the era.
@ImportGamingFTW8 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! Yeah, I'm interested in collecting more LCD games, and have picked up a couple more in recent months. Nice that you have a Game & Watch, those are usually a little pricey, even in Japan, especially depending on condition. I had the original Donkey Kong one years ago, but sold it.
@MellowGaming8 жыл бұрын
Had that Donkey Kong 2 G&W since I was a kid and only discovered a while back that I had never removed the protective plastic layer off the top. I should sell it for a million pounds and then buy all the other ones I want. Was good hearing you on the My Life In Gaming stream the other day. Been bugging them to get you and Eric Grider from Game Vs Game on there.

Thanks man! Yeah, it's been tough finding the opportunity to join the stream, since I almost always have work when it happens, but thankfully, I have a little time off this summer, so I could make it. @@ImportGamingFTW This appears to be an exact reskin of the Konami Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles handheld, which would mean it could be recreated and added to MAME if we had a high quality enough photo or scan of the startup graphics to work with. Even the manual scan you've shown wouldn't be a terrible source.
@jessragan67147 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, this brings back memories. I reviewed this on the late 1UP web site years ago. It seemed like a decent enough game, but it stung a little finding out that it was just Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with different graphics. Yeah, the artwork for Goemon at least is still not quite what it became in the middle of the Super Famicom era, but it is close...goofier rather than traditional like the other titles before it, at least. My immediate thoughts when seeing the sewer gameplay were 'huh, that looks exactly like the dam level in TMNT on the NES!' then the jingle vindicated me- that's gotta be a reskin of a TMNT LCD game based on the NES game!

I think Working Designs was set to release the PS2 game Stateside but as we all know they sadly went out of business beforehand. I actually have the TMNT II LCD game. Yep, this is the game that put the final nail in Working Designs' coffin, sadly...and honestly, it's not even a game that would have been worthy of one of their localizations! Glad you enjoyed the video--I have a couple of other LCD games, maybe I'll talk about those sometime too.

I kinda suspected this was a conversion of the TMNT game we got in the US, that underwater scene looks like it was lifted right from the NES game! Interesting that the JP version was reskinned for Goemon, though.

Yeah, the music and sewer setting really gave me TMNT vibes as well, but the thought never crossed my mind that it may have been a reskin of an actual TMNT game. I thought Konami was just hyped on their TMNT games and the style just kind of rubbed off!

I remember seeing some of those konami LCD games back in the day, i'm unsure if i ever used one. I think i may of held one at a thrift store in the arly 2000's. If i remember correctly the buttons didn't feel as 'sharp' as they did on the tiger line of LCD games. The only 2 LCD's i played much of were Mega Man 2 and Aladen from tiger. I remember that mega man one destoryed your thumbs. You had to press so hard on those small plastic balls. Anyways nice video.

Thanks man! And hell no, I did NOT speed up that bike footage...I actually had to slow it down significantly. God, now that you mention it, yeah, those Tiger buttons were stiff and a bit rough on the thumbs...probably why I hated them so much.

Wow, a new episode so soon? Awesome! And it's about the one Goemon game I pretty much couldn't find any real info on online - so it's the best possible kind of review. :D I'm really interested in getting one of these bad boys, but I've never ever seen one, not on ebay or in Japan. Especially not one with the box and manual! I'm returning to Japan later this year, so where should I look? I don't really think I've seen any LCD games for sale, not even in Akihabara - or was I just too focused on other stuff to notice? Also, how rare is it? I mean sure, I haven't seen one anywhere, but I can hardly imagine that it wasn't a popular game 26 years ago. Oh, and you have a really nice CIB Goemon games collection there. I have most of the cartridge-based games without the box. I was happy I could find Ganbare Goemon 1+2 for the GBA for a somewhat decent price, seeing one in its box is somewhat of a rarity. :D Anyway, this new kind of episode was fun, you really found a nice way to make it longer! Waiting for the next review! (It will be about Ooedo Daikaiten, right?)
@ImportGamingFTW8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I guess this game is pretty rare--just did a Yahoo Auctions search now, and nothing game up. I was lucky that I found this from an Italian seller on ebay for about $60--I know these can go for over a hundred, even in Japan! Anyway, thank you for the continued support, and I'm glad you liked the episode. I thought most people would find the first half to be boring filler, but it seems quite a bit of people ended up enjoying it. Next review? I don't know, honestly! I would have said the next Goemon one would have been Ooedo Daikaiten, as we've talked about, but I might end up doing a collab on that with someone. Not sure yet, but I think that would be nice!

Well, I'll still try and look for it. Who knows, once I got a Twinbee 3 for 300 yen just because it was in the "untested" bin or something, while the same store way selling another, tested copy for like 1200. Of course it still worked perfectly. By the way, are you planning to cover the Wai Wai World games as a part of your journey to review every Goemon game? I know they are not part of the series, but Goemon is playable in both of them, so they could make an interesting video nonetheless. They are also pretty fun in my opinion, even if the first one has less than stellar camera.

Nice deal. Yeah, I get pretty good "junk" bin deals here and there, too. Fascinating video Jimmy... I love the live action stuff you are filming now, it really adds to your production. How the hell did you manage to mount that camera and play the game at the same time anyway? What? You couldn't hook that Handheld up to a capture card? Comon'! :P In all seriousness though, it was cool to see you riding around Japan and you expanded the scope of the video in order to compensate for what was obviously a pretty simple game. BTW, I have a handheld Gradius game with an identical case. I've had it since around 1990, although like most LCD games, it doesn't really hold up well in this day and age.
@ImportGamingFTW8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Master. Yeah, for a year now I'm very reluctant to film anything indoors. It's super easy to go outside here and film, so I really have no excuse not to. And I try to find something interesting or related to the subject to use as a backdrop, so I'm glad you think it adds to what little production I have. I would have captured directly, but unfortunately my laptop couldn't meet the minimum required specs to capture from an LCD game. I'll have to upgrade if I cover a future LCD game. Also, I'd LOVE to pick up Gradius or any of the other Konami LCD handhelds. You should do a 1CC run on your Gradius game, it would be pretty fun/funny. I've only seen one Konami LCD here in Japan, and it was a Contra being sold at Super Potato. I think it was about 300 bucks...yeah, not interested.

Japan is ridiculously safe...it's like putting life on easy mode. When I was in my early twenties, I should have lost bikes, bags, money, etc. so many times, but lucked out because...well, Japan.

This is Japan!? Are you sure? B-but the Yakuza and Kenka Bancho games told me that you have to fight random hoodlums at every corner. But seriously, this is the most Nat Geo video out of all the ones on your channel. Good change of pace tho!

Oh I thought it was awesome! I'd love to visit Japan. Didn't mean to come off as an ass. Just discovered this channel via Cygnus Destroyer. Love it! Games that did not get an international release always interested me.

No worries--glad you enjoyed it. I'm surprised no one's complained about it, really. And you found out about my channel from ol' Matty boy, eh? I'll give him an e-hug...a manly e-hug.

I love your channel. Do you live in Japan?
@ImportGamingFTW8 жыл бұрын
@Mrshootinputin Thank you, and to answer your question, yes I do. I just had my one year anniversary being back in Japan the other day, but in total I've lived in Japan for over four and a half years. @MeebleMeeble XD

You are so lucky. I wish I could live in Japan and I love importing Japanese games.

Only 5 yen? Cheapstake! Great gimmicky video, was nice to see a lot of live footage~

Five yen is the proper offering, sir...at least, that's what I'm gonna tell myself. Glad you liked the outside footage. :)

Did you wash your mouth at the shrine??!?! Don't forget!!! Cool video, though. Nice to see some outdoors, reminds me of my past trips to Japan.
@ImportGamingFTW8 жыл бұрын
I skipped that part, as I often do...plus, it would be hard to film in first person...though a nice shot of me shooting out water sloppily might have been fun!

Best Goemon collection I've seen! Too bad Ebisumaru got dissed, I kinda like him. Shrine visit felt like live action Pocky & Rocky /stupidgaijincomment
@ImportGamingFTW8 жыл бұрын
"...live action Pocky & Rocky" That's awesome--no worries, stupid gaijin comments are welcome and encouraged here. Thanks for complimenting the collection...I think I'm only six games and a board game a way from having it complete!

Lucky bastard getta buy all those GB games dirt cheap! I HAVE to go to Japan preferably Okinawa cause I heard Tokyo is stupid expensive!
@ImportGamingFTW8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Tokyo can be really expensive, but as long as you venture outside of Akihabara and hit up the right shops, you'll do fine. Hell, there are still deals to be found in Akihabara...not many, but they do exist! XD

Huh! I tought there were no pidgeons in Japan. In fact, i learned that Japan have crows the same way we have pidgeons in the west. EVERYTHING I KNOW IS A LIE!!!
@ImportGamingFTW8 жыл бұрын
Time to take that red pill and join the real world, my friend. :) There are a lot of crows in Japan as well, though. They sometimes crash into my balcony. XD

So you can read Japanese. I want to learn and stuff. I like Legend of Mystical Ninja but I want to play Ganbare Goemon 2 snes but is the story important or just don't buy until you learn it
@ImportGamingFTW7 жыл бұрын
While the story and character interactions are a big appeal of this series, you'll still have a great experience with most of the games due to the solid gameplay. I'd say go for it regardless of language barrier, but I believe an English patch was/will be released for GG2.

No back art! Straight to the trash
@ImportGamingFTW8 жыл бұрын
Yep, right next to the rest of those filthy "greatest hits" games...especially the neon puke green North American PS1 titles!
@markn10908 жыл бұрын
Those and the Gamecube yellow "players choice" line might be the worst box art designs. At least in SNES/N64 era they just put a classy gold medal on them
@ImportGamingFTW8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, those always rubbed me the wrong way, too, ha ha. I did like the gold medals on the older Nintendo stuff. Most Japanese "greatest hits" redesigns are OK. The one I have for the Goemon game is from the PSOne Books series of reprints. Some of these had phenomenal redesigns, with new, better artwork in many cases...only thing is, they never had any back artwork...why, just...why?
