No GPU. LCD is driven by the PXA directly. One of the chips is a microcontroller that drives the keyboard and does misc power sequencing. Microdrive will work better if you install my FAT32 driver. or repartition and format using FAT16 MS camera ships device-specific drivers, and for obvious reasons, none were made for the camera-bearing devices.

from NZ90 wikipedia "Over time, a number of these devices have suffered from design defects. In particular, the Sony CCD used had a tendency to fail over time, due to humidity affecting down the bonding substrate used in the CCD assembly. This failure mode affected many other CCD-based products at the time, including the Clie NX80V PDA, as well as a number of Sony digital camera models.[3][4] The LCD displays used on this model also had a tendency to be easily damaged."

Remember when Sony innovated? The mainboard for this is beautiful, so densely packed. All of Sony's electronics from around this time that I've seen disassembled had really well designed PCBs like this.
@noth606
@noth606 17 күн бұрын
are we pretending they stopped innovating? Is that the game? Seems boring and dumb to me. You might want to have a look at more recent things actually made by Sony and not the rebranded Chinese OEM stuff, you'll be pleasantly surprised I think, but they often have a pricetag reflecting the engineering that went into them. The sad reality is that most people do not care about technical innovation and high end manufacturing as much as it seems they used to, and Sony needs to make money somewhere since they can't really with their in-house made halo products. They do actually regularly release and sell stuff they don't make money on, but they can because of the mass market things that make up for it. Some things they seem to make just because they can, without any real regard for the profitability of them, like the NW-ZX300 next to my keyboard as I type this. It's not new, but not really old either, but it's what is commonly called a digital music player of the walkman line, the case is machined metal and glass, and every aspect of it is clearly grabbing and reaching for perfection. With the end result making ipods and the like look junky cheap substitutes with embarrassing features and mediocre performance. As you probably worked out I'm a fan as some would call it, of Sony's actual production - and have been for 40+yrs - but I also know the difference between something made by them and something that just has the name stamped on it.

@@noth606True, especially their new Bravia 9 TV, its a sight to behold, no blooming yet extremely bright. The first TV that made me feel like looking through a window. Not to mention my beloved NW-WM1Z (got a good deal), the IER-Z1R as well as their very underrated phone line. Though what i will say is that Sony's corporate structure has become massive, making it more difficult to find who does what (not that it was easy to begin with).
@Vickyorlo
@Vickyorlo 17 күн бұрын
@@noth606 I don't know... if all it takes to "innovate" is to release an expensive, high-end version of a device that differs from Chinese brandless counterparts largely by performance and build quality (the NW-ZX300 is a great looking piece of hardware, don't get me wrong), then Apple would be the most innovative company around.

I have actual nice Sony TVs from Costco and they're wicked nice compared to the crap that people rave about getting on Black Friday at Walmart. Alright, I know I'm setting the bar low there, but mine aren't even OLEDs. You have to spend some real money to see the bleeding edge of tech as it comes out. It's out there. Sony phones are really nice too its a shame they're not in the US.

My parents bought me one for my 16th birthday. I couldn't believe it because growing up we had always been kinda poor, but really my dad was just stacking money for decades. I remember taking it to school and everyone thought it was from the future lol ** what the actual fk is going on here? is this the Twilight Zone?? My dad never spent money on stuff that loses value. no nintendo, no video games, nothing... i worked for everything, starting at 5yo i was "home schooled" which was me going to the shop with my dad to learn about fixing on cars.. i grew up with second hand clothing from good will... all my toys were hand me downs from my older cousins, but we always had food in the house and no credit debt or car loans, my dad put all his earnings into investments basically and didn't even consider reaching into it. what the fk is wrong with everyone in the comment section?? so yeah when on my 16th birthday he bought me a crazy expensive device that would only lose value over the years.. i was shocked. My dad drove a beat down S10 for 20 years bro... and it was already tired when he bought it, we rebuilt the motor on it when i was 7 so he could keep driving the thing. so yeah, i was shocked when i opened it. i think he bought it because he knew i would always remember and you stupid fks in the comments are ruining that

What a beautiful device, I knew about other Sony handhelds like this but not this specific one. It's a really nice form factor and the accessories really make me want to get one. I think a lot of people have missed out by not knowing about this one. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. As always brilliant content and look forward to the next one! Always click it the moment I see an upload!

I remember I wanted a Sony Clie so bad, not sure if it was this one, but within the Clie's range, but were out of my price range working just minimum wage at the time fresh out of highschool. Not sure what I would have done with it, but I loved tech and it was so ahead of everything else for it's features and size.

Oh how I wanted this PDA so much! They weren't very common in Australia though, so I settled for a Zire 71. It was an expensive little thing, but so much fun! Love your videos, thank you!! Happy New Year to you!!

The tech that came out in the late 90s and early 2000s looked so futuristic than the absolute garbage that we have today thanks to minimalism.

There was also a 3rd party wifi memory stick module made by a Japanese company, I had one and it worked well on my TJ35. I sold the PDA and Wifi stick after i upgraded to at TJ37

Shame about the camera having different behaviour. It's always spooky when that happens, did I make the problem worse? Or is it better that it's detecting a problem rather then failing in quiet ways. Or tech spirits forbid, did I create a 2nd problem...
@edwardfletcher7790
@edwardfletcher7790 18 күн бұрын
I suspect the original problem is a HW fault with the camera's optical sensor. The static was really cool though... Unfortunately, the new fault is a total lack of response from the camera module. That's probably a flex connector fault or a cable crack ☹️

Just an amazing device, an all in one wonder without cell phone function. I never saw that thing back in 2003, and I had a big Sony Center store in my town with the latest and the greatest stuff, i spent hours on that store trying the VAIO's 😂. If that PDA was available then, I probably had a heart attack 😅, Excellent video as always, greetings from Colombia.

Aside from some retro 4:3 ThinkPad I really hope I will buy some of these 'ancient' PDA's some day. These remind me of days when I wanted such device when I was much younger, although it was in late 00's, when first smartphones came around. Also thanks for introducing me to a masterpiece musical composition at the end of the video.

I remember these! I had the model below that one and it did feel amazing. It was also a pleasure to use. Pretty sure I had a wifi memory stick too. For the Japanese, you could use google translate with the camera and it overlays translated text in the picture. Translation is approximate but better than nothing.
