REVIEW: Ganbare Goemon: Ooedo Daikaiten (The Grand Cycle of Oedo) is a 2001 Konami title for PlayStation that is all about recycling, a description that is more literal than you might expect. It's the last of the classic style Goemon side-scrolling platfomers to be made (so far), and is one hell of a fun action game for the PS1.
IGFTW Ep. 41 is a review of Ganbare Goemon: The Grand Cycle of Ooedo. Since this 32-bit entry in the Mystical Ninja series is all about recycling, I decided to recycle some things from past videos I've done about the Ganbare Goemon games...can you find them all? Do you care? Probably not, but no matter, I had a fun time making this one and I hope you enjoy it.
Update: since the publication of this video, a fan made English patch is now available for this game!

Gameplay was captured using the Elgato Game Capture HD from actual PS1 hardware upscaled via a Framemeister, and video/audio was edited using Sony Movie Studio Platinum Suite, Version 12.
Other games featured in this video are Ganbare Goemon: Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu and Kuru Nara Koi! Ayashige Ikka no Kuroi Kage (Konami, PS1), as well as Ganbare Goemon 2: Kiteretsu Shougun Magginesu & Yuki Hime Kyuushutsu Emaki (Konami, SFC).
All music used in this video was taken from the featured game in addition to one track from the previously credited Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu and another at the very end from Ganbare Goemon: Sarawareta Ebisumaru on Game Boy.
If you like the video, leave a like, comment or share with a friend who loves Japanese games-I appreciate any and all support, and it helps Import Gaming FTW continue to grow!

So glad you covered this one! I've been on the fence about importing this one since I couldn't find any decent reviews on KZbin. Then your video showed up in my sub box and I finally got the review I was waiting for lol. just ordered a copy a few minutes ago! I've always been intrigued by the DS Goemon title as well, so I'm really hoping you can get around to making that video like you alluded to at the end!!

Thanks man, it was your destiny to pick it up! I hope you enjoy it, and let me know your thoughts if you have the time. I had a few other people comment on a possible video about the DS game, and I would love to do one, of course--just need to save up to afford a capture solution...and be lucky enough to find a good one at all!

Absolutely adore the Goemon games, and your quirky ftw series. It's so nutty, interesting and different to all other platformers out there. This series deserves a comeback, or even a compilation collection would be awesome as well. Cheers Konami.

@@ImportGamingFTW Agreed! It's quite the particular series...you couldn't just throw anyone at it. The DNA of the Goemon games is so unique. The giant robot battles seal it for me, they are outrageous. Reminds me of samurai pizza cats....would you ever consider doing a video on that? I found Kyatto Ninden Teyandee the other day!

EDIT: Giveaway time is over! Unfortunately, there wasn't a winner this time...I thought it might be a little too hard. Thanks to those who tried, though--I'll do a giveaway again with easier conditions, for sure. Anyway, below are the recycled elements from previous episodes with time stamps: Ep. 2 - 0:06 - Same opening line and Goemon 1 cutscene used in that video Ep. 12 - 7:05 - Audio and video taken directly from the episode Ep. 17 - 23:34 - "The Goemon Defender" line and graphic used at the end of that video Ep. 22 - 25:26 - The Konami Exec with his bad localization jobs returns Ep. 29 - 1:19 - first person perspective much like a majority of that video Ep. 35 - 13:43 - general store items and use are presented pretty much the same Original message: GIVEAWAY TIME! Since recycling plays such a big part in Ooedo Daikaiten, I thought it would be fun to "recycle" elements from each of the previous Goemon-themed episodes of IGFTW and sprinkle them in somewhere in this new episode. And to make it more fun, I thought I'd turn it into a contest as well. The first person to correctly identify all six references to the past six Goemon episodes within the first week of this video's upload date will be rewarded with a copy of this game! Just respond to this comment with your answers and I'll edit my comment with the results whether someone wins or not. Good luck, it should be pretty tough to spot them all. Remember, the recycled parts only come from Import Gaming FTW episodes, not the soundtrack, collection or medal game videos...but feel free to check those out if you haven't. Playlist of Goemon videos are found in the description of this video. Good luck and hope you enjoy IGFTW episode 41!

Gonna try: 1. At the beginning you recycled game footage from Ganbare Goemon Karakuri Douchuu (MSX2) 2. Drinking Yebisu beer like in your other Ebisumaru video 3. Ganbare Goemon: Kuru Nara Koi! Ayashige Ikka No Kuroi Kage (PS1) footage 4. Shooting at the shrine like in your LCD game video 5. Ganbare Goemon 2 (Super Famicom) - The Legend of the Mystical Ninja 2 footage used for the comparison 6. The Ganbare Goemon gameplay footage shown around 22 minutes with the people dancing in circle is similar to the ones shown in Ganbare Goemon 2 video

I imported this game over a decade ago and had a blast playing it with a friend. It was like a Greatest Hits of Goemon, while also being a 2D style Goemon game. We didn't play it as thoroughly as Goemon's Great Adventure, mostly due to my lack of Japanese skills and absence of walkthroughs at the time. Also seeing your Goemon DS poster framed has reminded me to get a frame for mine. Keep up the great work I always look forward to new IGFTW videos especially if they involve Goemon.

I have a bit of a soft spot for PS1 2D platformers. There was that whole thing back then where magazines would slate almost any game that didn't have 3D in them somewhere so you got stuff like this mixing 2D and 3D. God it's unbelievable how much effort went into these PS1 Goemon games, yet how little love they got. I guess that's why Konami ditched the series. Daikaiten drove me nuts actually, hard to say why considering I played Shinsedai Shumei to the end, but I had to put this one down. You're tempting me to try it again, but I need to finish 2 on the SFC first
@ImportGamingFTW

In the grand scheme of all things, it sure seems the PS1 titles were overlooked, but I think at the time they must have sold well enough, since every one of them got multiple print runs. If you have a coop partner, I would recommend playing this game (as well as 2 on SFC!) with a friend, lover, or other (I won't inquire as to where you found such a person).

Yay, a new Goemon episode! Sure, it might recycle a lot, and has a few shortcomings, but it's actually one of the most enjoyable episodes in my opinion. I KNOW that it's a bit lazier than usual, but if you want to play some Goemon, especially with someone who's new to the series or doesn't know it so well, it's extremely enjoyable. It was actually my favorite one on the PS1, even though I really liked the others as well (okay, not Kuru Nara Koi, but that one was enjoyable enough as well).
@ImportGamingFTW

Yeah, I played it with someone who isn't familiar with the series and we had such a great time with it. I enjoy it single player, but coop really made the game for me, so much so that I don't really even mind the game's flaws and "cheap" feel. Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu is always going to be my favorite of the PS1 titles--it represents the era so well and is such an interesting entry in the series--but Ooedo is second place!

@@ImportGamingFTW Hey, Jimmy! Is your 3DS soft modded? You could stream your gameplay wireless from your 3DS via Snickerstream. An other way would be soft mod a Wii U to inject the Gomon DS rom into a official Wii shop game. (Wii U DS injection comparability list) Of course DS Emulation on a PC is always an option. Other than than even a PS1 Mini has decent DS Emulation at this point?! However... the first option: streaming 3DS gameplay to your PC would be maybe the probably the best and the most reliable option. I would not recommend spending hundreds of bucks to buy a 3DS hardware modded capture unit. Especially not if you can easily soft mod an 3DS or Wii U at this point. Kind regards from Europe
@ImportGamingFTW
@ImportGamingFTW 4 жыл бұрын

Yup, been waiting for this one, I recommend all the PS1 Goemon games to ppl. I can't tell u how many times I've popped this game in and just played it non stop for a day or 2 just to beat it again, I love this game. I love the silcon style graphics, the traditional gameplay, the lack of a language barrier, it's a great Goemon game all around. People should be going crazy trying to get a free copy, it's a must play for platformer fans, and the artwork for the manual is amazing, as all Goemon manuals are. Personally, even though with Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu's semi-hefty language barrier, I probably like it a bit more than Oedodaikaiten, I love punching enemies with the white boxing gloves, and then flipping around the screen as the old man. Gamefaqs has an adequate guide to get you through the text heavy missions. Though gamefaqs always references a Mystical Ninja fan site that no longer exists that used to have guides and maps for every Goemon game made. Anybody ever see that website when it was up? Would love the maps for the 3D games.

Oh man, _I am HYPED!_ I recently picked up a Japanese PS2 - so recently, I've not gotten a game for it, lol. Not for lack of purchasing, as I ordered Critical Blow (PS1) and Capcom's Kenichi The Mightiest Disciple (PS2) weeks ago - they're just taking their sweet time to get here. I always import fighting games or action games first in situations like this, as I'm 100% sure I can handle it without needing to know translation. But I'm already thinking about what _else_ do I wanna start picking up after I confirm that both PS1 and PS2 discs work on the thing, and BAM! Now I know _for SURE_ I'll be picking up a Goemon game or three for the thing over the next few months (^-^). Also interested in seeing if Camera Translation Apps can help me on more text-heavy imports anyway, but I don't wanna nab an RPG yet... Goemon's so perfect! I don't even care about recycled themes and mechanics (and I *thought* the music in the vid was familiar from Great Adventure, lol. When you said it, I was so happy I wasn't just going crazy!) So happy to be reminded of this series, and to have finally gotten around to checking out this vid. I started watching it awhile ago just to throw it in my KZbin history since I couldn't get to it at the time, but only got around to working my way back to it now. I haven't missed an Import Gaming FTW yet and I don't intend to now!

I sadly had an under $30 copy from a US seller slip through my fingers on Ebay recently. This one is quite good, and Konami took the recycle theme a long way in this game, with some stages, and a few bosses recycled from earlier Goemon games. Plus unlike the first PS1 Goemon game, Yae (YAY!) and Sasuke are back and playable (I pretend the middle PS1 game doesn't exist). Thankfully Goemon 2 and 3 SFC have been English translated by a group of fans, just awaiting #4 to be released with English patch (it was almost finished last I heard). I simply must get this game in my collection, due to buying a couple other games I had long looked for for a good price (Puchi Carat PS1 last year after waiting 10 years for one on Ebay from a US seller, Magical Taruruto-Kun MD after about 6 years, just bought today). Just this, and Arawaru Dynamites left for me, and I'll be satisfied having all the 2D titles in the collection outside of the RPGs on FC, the Ebisumaru spinoff on SFC, and the MSX (cuz like no MSX ya know). Edit: Yay, I typed my original comment before I watched the entire video about things recycled, and you covered them all, we do think alike on some things. Also nice shoutout about fan translation, and the recent flack caught by the translation team (DDS Translators) due to a certain word in Goemon 3 that directly translated.

There is something mildly depressing about Goemon games doing a dollar-store version of the music from Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon where it sounds "familiar," but is for all intents and purposes AI generated and completely lacks any semblance of the soul that ran thru its forefather's veins. it seems to me that all the playstation entries to the series are rather disappointing compared to their predecessors and even the n64 outings. I can personally only comment on Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu, having played the fan translation that finally released. It felt like a huge step back from the SNES titles gameplay wise. The soundtrack is good, but only due to it simply recycling tracks from previous games, much like Ooedo Daikaiten. Having watched your review, I think I would prefer Ooedo Daikaiten simply due to the fact that it recycles the good entries of the series.

2 of the 3 PS1 Goemon games are quite good, it's the middle game where Konami let an inexperienced Nagoya office team work on it, is where they went wrong. I don't really find the N64 games all that either, especially after the 4 SFC games (GG3 SFC is still my least favorite of those 4 unfortunately), and how great they are (especially 4). When it comes to the N64 games though, I always prefer the second game, GGA, as it plays like a more traditional Goemon title, and less like an N64 Zelda game (seriously, the dungeons require collecting keys to unlock doors, seems familiar). The one thing that the first N64 game got right, the villains.

This game is okay but such a disappointment, it's obvious that it was made on a small budget. It's too bad that after the fantastic N64 games Konami started abandoning giving Goemon games the ambitious scale they deserve, but they did and you see that here -- all levels are flat planes unlike the curving multi-layer stages of Goemon's Great Adventure (this is something you don't mention, but is very noteworthy! It really shows how this game is a much smaller, less ambitious game than that one is.); and as you do mention, the stages are mostly remakes of the second SNES game; the music is all taken straight from the N64; etc. The level designs are nowhere near GGA's level either, sadly. It's an okay to good game but this series deserved better. Oh, and I find the bouncy block things horribly difficult to get to work correctly! Am I doing something wrong, or do they barely function? That made some areas very, very not fun... but anyway, good review, it is a good game despite its issues because it's classic-style Goemon.
@ImportGamingFTW
@ImportGamingFTW 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's pretty hard to dislike a game that's this solid mechanically--just wish it got the same care and attention in the story and production values that most 16-bit and N64 entries got. The block swinging is kind of a pain at first, but I think I got used to it pretty soon, even when drinking. I think you just really have to make sure the pipe connects as it extends, and it's a bit more unforgiving than something like Simon's whip in Castlevania IV.
