For even more deep dive effect - In the Boromir's bit about "why as a greates sourcerer havent you created the perfect illustion" you could have mention Huge Weaving/Agent Smith quip about the first version of Matrix being too perfect and thus subjects easily rejecting and that therefore simulation had to have elements of pain.

A long time loop trapped in a bathroom taking a perpetual crap, in front of an animated green rat does sound cruel (much like the final days of Elvis) but consider the source... He turned a hobbit into a potato; because he annoyed him? Gandalf is like Billy Mummy in that episode of Twilight Zone. Just be glad he doesn't wish you into the corn field.
