The siege and fall of the capital of Eregion, Ost-in-Edhil (literally Fortress of the Eldar), is one of those critical turning points of the Second Age that Tolkien frustratingly leaves threadbare...on the plus side it leaves plenty of space to imagine an echo of the Fall of Gondolin, with Celebrimbor the last fighting at the doors of the House of the Mírdain to keep Sauron out.
@OrgusDin

Celebrimbor was a gigachad elf like Fingolfin, no way he didn't.
@Soloong_Gaybowzer
@Soloong_Gaybowzer 11 ай бұрын
The only reason he surrendered at the end was because Sauron claimed to have his family captured and promised that they would be reunited. Sauron in typical fashion tortured and killed his family in front of him, then beat him to death with his own mithril smithing hammer. Only after his death did he allow the orcs to have their fun using his torso as an archery target. The absolute hate and disrespect Sauron showed towards one elf, was never before seen nor heard from again in Middle Earth. That's how badly Celebrimbor f*cked up Sauron's plan to enslave the world with the rings.

@@Soloong_Gaybowzer I'm sure you're aware, but Celebrimbor didn't have a wife and daughter. They were only invented for the Shadow of Mordor/War games which are very much non-canon.

@@aldunlop4622 quite understandable. But if we hate all those who try for months to bring a lore as great as Tolkien's, to us, and in the process serves the greater purpose of introducing a lot of folks to Tolkien's work, no matter the flaws, then we lose all meaning of fellowship that Tolkien himself lived to preach.
@aldunlop4622
@aldunlop4622 3 ай бұрын
@@panicpowerhouse8158 Well, that's exactly my point - the Amazon creators didn't try to bring Tolkien's work to us, they tried to pervert it with a feminist/forced diverse perspective. In doing so, they forgot what makes Tolkien great in the first place, the sense of magic, of long, long deep history, the wonder of the Elves etc. The series is an insult to Tolkien's work, trying to use his name as a stamp to tell their 2020's politics, not Tolkien's vision. I think it's the biggest waste of money in history, but I hope sometime in the future someone will tell the story of the Second Age who puts their own desires aside to instead revere and tell Tolkien's story.
@panicpowerhouse8158
@panicpowerhouse8158 3 ай бұрын
@@aldunlop4622 I agree (except the forced feminism, and I have my reasons). But I also believe audiovisual as a media is separate from the books. And it should be. We shouldn't try to look at what made a book great, in a film or a show. I wanna lash out occasionally (especially when I see an abomination like the StRanGeR) but that only means I won't enjoy what I'm watching. And if I'm watching something, I'd rather enjoy it. Part of what made Tolkien so great was he understood differences. And he taught us a way to embrace them. If I am asked what is Tolkien to me, I'd say it's what teaches me love and friendship and shows me the importance of all bonds of fellowship 😀. Is RoP is a good show? Maybe not. But I didn't enjoy GoT as much as I thought I would. I am enjoying RoP. I know there are and will be differences. Making a tv show means you gotta have some loose ends, some "cliffhangers" so the fools won't fly. I hate them for making horrible mistakes at a billion dollar budget. But I also enjoy every time Durin is on screen. I have had fun watching Sauron being prioritized as a deceiver in the way Celebrimbor compliments the ways of Annatar. It's great to be able to have a visual understanding of the dynamics, without having to write over what i read in the past. This show made me go back to silmarillion and start listening to two new Tolkien podcasts. I think somewhere down the line that counts for something. But all said, I still get where you're coming from because the entire first season I was there myself

Indeed! Rivendell was originally the refugee camp of the survivors of Ost-in-Edhil that Elrond rescued as his army retreated from the sack of the city. Over time Imladris evolved into a stronghold and proper settlement. The Noldor smiths that remained would later reforge Anduril.
@thebrowneyesofmandalore
@thebrowneyesofmandalore Жыл бұрын
@@LordTelperion Thank you for the response. Yeah Rivendell became something of a reflection of Gondolin, and I know their smiths reforged Anduril, which was originally made by dwarves, but I was wondering if there was anyone of renown past the fall of Eregion and if they made anything of significance. Ohh just had a thought, I know they weren’t of elven make, but the Barrow weight blades that were special in their make, were made be the Dunedain for the specific purpose of use against the Nazgûl. These the Hobbits received from Tom Bombadil after their rescue from the Barrow Downs.

While Gil-galad was the high king of the Noldor who chose to remain in Middle-earth during the Second Age, Eregion's political position there is unclear. After Sauron came to Eregion in the guise of Annatar, the rebellion against Galadriel and Celeborn by Gwaith-i-Mírdain, led by Celebrimbor, indicates that this kingdom has an autonomy independent of Gil-galad. According to Unfinished Tales, this situation of Galadriel, who seems to have been in control of Eregion for a while, can be read as a reflection of the motivation that formed the basis of her departure from Valinor and the continuation of her policy towards Fëanor, through her grandson Celebrimbor.

The Rings of Power show should have made Celebrimbor the main character until his demise by Sauron/Annatar: 1) His character arc revolves around him desiring to match the greatness of his grandfather Feanor, his hidden romantic feelings for Galadriel, and desire to use the Mithril discovered in the Misty Mountains as his "means" to achieve that dream of creating a great new elven realm in Eregion while creating somthing comparable to the Silmarils done by Feanor! 2) During this time, the show would have him come across Narvi and the season builds their friendship to where they eventually construct the Doors of Durin together and it creates a good alliance/trade between the two races. However, this then brings Sauron to disguise himself to Eregion as Annatar. 3) He gains Celebrimbor's trust by showing him how to create the 2nd "Eflstone/Elessar," which Celebrimbor gives as his "last ditch" effort to win the heart of Galadriel. She accepts the gift and beings to have conflicted feelings to Celebrimbor while not trusting the person calling himself Annatar now. Consequently, she leaves for Lorien. 4) Brokenhearted, Celebrimbor goes on a forage trip to help get his mind of Galadriel, but Sauron secretly orders orcs to attack his small company, but thankfully Narvi had discovered the orcs base camp and learned they were gathering a hunting party for an elf named Celebrimbor. 5) Celebrimbor gets ambushed by the orcs and is nearly killed by the orc leader, but Narvi and small company of dwarves comes to his aid. Right after Narvi kills the orc leader, Sauron appears and kills everyone except Celebrimbor. He decides to only knock out Celebrimbor because he sees him as means to achieve his dream of becoming the next Dark Lord. 6) Celebrimbor wakes up to find Narvi was killed by Sauron (not knowing he's Annatar too) and realizes that he needs to strengthen Eregion to fight Sauron and the orc base camp that was recently moved south away from the Misty Mountains. Consequently, Annatar offers him to form the "Gwaith-i'Mirdain" group to build weapons/defense/etc. for this upcoming war with Sauron. 7) You get the final scene with Sauron/Annatar holding paper designs for Rings and talks in his black speech that he will use Celebrimbor to build Rings of Power for every race on Middle Earth to own, but he will then construct the One Ring to Rule them All and achieve his goal of becoming the next Dark Lord of Middle-Earth.

I would argue it wasn't just the Three that were taken off when Sauron attempts his spell of dominion, as all nineteen must have been worn by Elves at that moment. The Rings were made by the Elves for the Elves to preserve their civilization on Earth. Also, why else would Sauron cast the spell to enslave the Elves if only three of them were wearing the rings? Regardless, fortunately the Keepers "heard" the incantation, collectively rolled a natural 20 saving throw, and took off their rings in the nick of time.

How can the Blue Wizards have hampered Sauron's attack in 1695 SA? Surely the wizards didn't come to Middle Earth until part way through the Third Age?

What's with the great smiths of Middle Earth. They either get terribly screwed by a Dark Lord or fall to evil: Aule, Sauron, Saruman, Feanor, Celebrimbor, etc.

@@ArgonKZbin Aule was screwed in the sense that Morgoth's legacy destroyed the lives of his students by corrupting them in the long-run. It really hurts if your students, basically children and friends to you, were corrupted by Morgoth. Plus, Morgoth screwed the Dwarves with the long-run damages caused by the Dwarves vs. Elves conflict (started by the Nauglamír), the Balrog (Durin's Bane), and the Dragons.

„Their task was to circumvent Sauron: to bring help to the few tribes of Men that had rebelled from Melkor-worship, to stir up rebellion ... and after his first fall to search out his hiding (in which they failed) and to cause [?dissension and disarray] among the dark East ... They must have had very great influence on the history of the Second Age and Third Age in weakening and disarraying the forces of East ... who would both in the Second Age and Third Age otherwise have ... outnumbered the West.“ (J.R.R. That's a great question! My editor and I were actually chatting about that when considering making that portion map-oriented...which token would we use? It's not a nazgul bc they aren't around yet. Not a black numenorean because he hasn't corrupted them yet. It basically leaves us with (most likely) Easterling messengers.

@@NerdoftheRings probably I would maybe my guess would be some of the middle men in places like minhiriath and enedwaith because of their hate for numenor it’s likely maybe Sauron influenced them and trained one to be diplomatic but that’s a crazy guess on my part that makes more sense to me

@@NerdoftheRings I wouldn't think the Elves would pay much attention to Easterlings. But Sauron might have managed to capture and corrupt a few Númenoreans from the earlier exploratory voyages they made.
