Yes, I saw them two years ago at New-Waves-Day in Oberhausen, Germany, the band that was playing for a while as Gang of Four. And Andy died shortly thereafter.

I saw Andy twice, including a Sydney gig not too long before his very sad passing. At the end of said gig, a young bloke in the crowd, near the front, had everyone almost in tears when he told his short story with Andy, the-non Jon band and the whole crowd listening! In a nutshell and because I had trouble hearing the whole story, he had been going through stuff in his life and had been told to go and see a very unique and special guitarist. He had never heard of Gang'a and was so blown away by Andy Gill's playing, that he became very emotional as he spoke directly to Andy at the end of the encore. There must've been at least 1000 fans there, it sounded like his voice was breaking, if in fact he wasn't tearful and everyone, no one more so than Andy himself, was really moved and touched by his reaction to a guitar great, fearless in his determination to play HIS way. I'm thankful that the gang can still get together and I think this guy did a reasonable job with the axe work. Andy isn't an easy act to follow. I hope that he is somehow rocking out with them, either hidden from our eyes on stage or up above!

Funny, but I saw the stand-in Gang of Four lineup with Andy Gill, RIP, a couple of times and that lead singer also smashed a microwave. They really should use one of those store dummies.

it still kills me when they reunited in 05 and i had the opportunity to see them - but in phx they cancelled due to LOW TICKET sales. shameful - the 5th largest city in the country couldn't come out for one of the most important and influential bands of their era.

I saw them play what was supposed to be their farewell show back in '84 [ish]. At that time, they were the best live band of their generation. But Gang of Four were not Gang of Four without Jon King, and they certainly aren't Gang of Four without Andy Gill.

@@dee_seejay They’re both not truly GoF imo. If Keith died and the Stones continued it wouldn’t be the Stones to me for example. Same with GoF. Their songs and sound are great even with a cover band.
@acemacgruber6593
@acemacgruber6593 Жыл бұрын
@@dee_seejay I’m not familiar with Magazines catalog to compare. Even though the Stones were always a two guitar group, the defining riffs to me were Keith’s rhythm, even when Taylor’s lead provided the best version of them. When I think of GoF the first thing that comes to mind is the guitar sound, not the songs. I couldn’t tell you who wrote which song. The distinctive guitar sound what I was attracted to. David Gilmour’s style is distinctive. If Floyd had gotten back together minus Gilmour, but replaced him with an incredible player, it might be a great band, but it wouldn’t be Floyd to me. This version of GoF may be great live and be worthy, but it wouldn’t be GoF to me. After Picasso died, someone who painted like him isn’t Picasso. Gill’s sound was the defining factor in GoF to me. Other’s may hear differently. U2’s the Edge is similar to me. A unique sound that, if he were replaced, no matter how good they sounded, wouldn’t be U2 anymore.

Sad to see one of the most creative and unique bands turn into a nostalgia act. Pajo is a great guitarist but a lot of the songs feel slower and lacking in energy. To Hell With Poverty still sounds great though

What a spiteful, hateful thing to say about a band who made a inspiring contribution to the culture. Jeez! 😡
