Andy Gill is one of the unsung greatest guitarists of all time.
@koho5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I frequent guitar channels and he's hardly ever mentioned. There are some that appreciate him, but one thing that keeps awareness from spreading is he's pretty much impossible to imitate, so guitar wannabees (like me) don't learn his music much. Gonna try Paralyzed though.

Without Andy Gill no Franz Ferdinand. No sure if that's a good thing. Gang of Four are an incredible band.

Komo Lee Ray - Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine described Andy Gill's axe work style as "jagged-plague-disco-raptor-attack-industrial-funk deconstructed guitar anti-hero sonics"...While Andy Gill himself had a simpler explanation; "I'm a bit of an awkward bastard, I think that's why Gang Of Four has a specific identity and musical language".

@@Blackscorpion1963 Like every note has to be extracted against its will, yanked out by the neck kicking and screaming. Gill is/was a guitar god.

He wrote the book on Andy Gill style guitar playing and I doubt very many have read it as he’s not frequently been copied or imitated…

Dave Allen on bass may have been over shadowed by Andy, but his baselines on these early tracks gave the band the 'funk' that sets them apart form the crowd. Without him I doubt we'd still be seeking to relive the joy they created.

Ritam sekcija strašna i veličanstveni gitarist Andy Gill, fantastično energičan pjevač Jon King. Kapa do poda!

English translation from Croatian: A few days before the concert, I listened to the radio show "Po vašen schočen" (which I followed very often at the time) and decided to go to the concert. I couldn't believe how much energy they radiated. Since then, and a little before, I have been to many concerts of so-called big bands, but this one at the Biennale was one of the best I've been to. He broadened my musical horizons in every sense. Awesome rhythm section and magnificent guitarist Andy Gill, fantastically energetic singer Jon King. Hat to the floor!✌

+SoulStylistJukeBox Not as fresh. Can't be helped. It's still a great album though. Post-Dave Allen, I lost interest.
@SoulStylistJukeBox8 жыл бұрын
+Doctor Feelfunny The songs on Solid Gold may not be as iconic as those on the debut album but the production is better and the rhythm section on this album really swings.
@doctorfeelfunny5848 жыл бұрын
I agree that Solid Gold's production is much crisper, but I'm sort of oldschool punk and prefer a dirtier (within limits) sound. It's all subjective, but I think we probably agreed that they're sadly under-rated - mostly due to being unknown/unheard.
@gregorybrabander65898 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. It was the song "What We All Want" that first turned me on to Gang of Four. And so along with that song, the album Solid Gold. And it is amazing! But so is the first album, but I have never ever thought the first album was that much better. And truthfully, I don't think they are an apples to apples comparison. Sure, the band members are the same, but the production is incredibly different. Entertainment! to me sounds much more stripped down, raw, just plug in and rock out. Whereas Solid Gold is more polished and refined, with much more solid bass punch to it. And I'm glad they are so very different in that sense. Because it gives me more of a feel for what the band can do sonically. I just wish Dave Allen wouldn't have left to pursue Shriekback (who's first album Care (the first side at least) is excellent (because of Dave)). And I know some out there are going to cringe when I say that Sarah Lee did a helluva good job filling Dave's massive shoes on Songs of the Free. And when I saw them during the Songs of the Free tour, Sarah was awesome. I didn't think she was just good, I thought she was great! But it was their next album Hard that frankly for me was hard to listen. That album is when I threw in the towel. You go from loving all or most songs on an album and then Hard drops and only one song as I recall was decent. "Silver Lining" I liked, but even it with its drum machine sounds odd. When Gang of Four first got back together in 2005, those were some happy days for me! I had always said if there were one band from back in the day I'd like to see again, it was Gang of Four. And they made my wish come true :-) Now if Kaja Goo Goo would actually break up for good the world would be a better place fer sure. OK, not "The" world, but my world :D
