In the closing montage and the last shot, you can see The Twin Towers. The producers tried to get Martin Scorsese to cut that part out, because this movie came out a year after 9/11. When asked about it, Scorsese said, "This movie it's about the people who built New York, not those who tried to destroy it." That last shot, seeing the towers, and that ending set to U2's song The Hands That Built America is so powerful.

@@Countdooku97 I think you could definitely make a case for that point of view. The man is one of the few out there that can completely encompass entirely different characters perfectly. From Last of the Mohicans, to the Phantom Thread, to There Will Be Blood, to Lincoln it's hard to tell it's the same person at times. He's spoken about how exhausting it is for him in the past and I tend to believe it because the performances are incredible.

The scene with the fire companies was accurate. Before there were organized fire departments in the US, private companies handled any fires. Often two companies would arrive on the scene at around the same time and would literally fight to see who would get to put out the fire. Usually the structure would just burn down while this was happening.
@MannerdDesert7
@MannerdDesert7 2 ай бұрын
Actually it's not as accurate as you'd think, first of all they weren't private companies, they were volunteer groups & the little funding they did get was from insurance companies not individuals, secondly the notion of firefighters fighting while houses burned down is extremely rare (if it happened at all), competing firefighters would fight & race but they would still work together to stop fires. They were more likely to fight after over who did a better job.

My Left Foot was something special. I'd have never seen it if it hadn't been assigned for a film class, and my life would have been lesser. It's the ultimate expression of committing to a role, and those around you allowing it: "Committing himself to the role, the actor insisted that everyone on set refer to him as Christy Brown, refusing to reply to Daniel. More radical, however, was the actor’s physical dedication to the role with Day-Lewis learning to type and paint with his feet just like Christy Brown, as well as demanding to be pushed around set on a wheelchair. Practically frustrating, Daniel Day-Lewis’ refusal to leave his wheelchair meant that the film’s production assistants were forced to lift the actor over the masses of equipment littered on set to get him ready for his next scene. Furthermore, the actor took this a step further during the production’s lunch break where it was reported that My Left Foot’s set assistants were made to spoon-feed the actor in accordance with the lifestyle of his character."

A good friend of mine (who’s sadly passed) told us an anecdote he’d heard about Day-Lewis in this movie: he said Cameron Díaz was doing the rounds, promoting the movie when it came out and a journalist asked her what it was like to get to work with Day-Lewis, to which she responded “I don’t know, from the moment we had the meet and greet, he was already Bill the Butcher”. Method to the extreme!

Daniel Day-Lewis as Bill the Butcher is a "force of nature" here. He's just INCREDIBLE in this, but, he's INCREDIBLE in everything. Also, you see a number of historical figures in this movie. The corrupt politician was Boss Tweed, who pretty much ran New York through Tammany Hall. The boxing match promoter was P.T. Barnum, famous as the co-founder of Barnum and Bailey's Circus. The main characters are fictional, but the depiction of social and political conditions is pretty accurate.

While highly fictionalized and altered to spin a good story, much of the story has its base in true history. The Dead Rabbits, the Draft Riots, Boss Tweed, Bill the Butcher all were based on actually people and events. Their characters here are very dramatized and often characters in the movie perform actions that were actually performed by others in reality. Some characters, such as Bill, are a blend of several historical people. Others are pretty accurate to the history records ... scarily Hell-Cat Maggie is one of them and yes she did have filed teeth and wore brass claws.

People don't want to believe it is what it is, but it will never cease within the human spirit the capability by motivation the ability to kill one human by another. We're violent by nature, and it's been that way since the beginning. Evil tendencies to inflict pain will never be vanquished. Whether self-motivated or not. The good news is that in today's society, however, most people do have a moral compass to understand that killing for the sake of killing is wrong. But the human mind and soul has a wide range of emotional parameters. And one side of it is very dark and disturbing.

I really recommend looking into the history of this era of New York City, allot of things in the movie were exaggerated, but there were gangs and firestations were private owned and would fight outside a house on who would put out the fire! Shanty towns were located where Central Park is now, they cleared all the shanty towns to clean up the city as the poorest of the poor lived there and it brought forward diseases and crime..

Scorsese's best stuff is not the De Caprio movies. Nor are they all brutally violent. "The King Of Comedy" is one you should definitely hit, it's a great movie. "After Hours" is a wild comedy as well. (Carly would have no problem with either!) "Cape Fear" (which does have violence) is a 90's suspense classic. "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" shows that Scorsese can direct a woman's story. At the end of the day, it's the De Niro/Scorsese collaborations that are the essential ones, not the ones with Leo.

My father was Irish from Brooklyn in the 1930s and 40s. He talked about the gangs, the Dead Rabbits, the West Enders. That was pre-civil war. Historical but not very well known history. When Irish people were treated very badly. I could say more, but I won't. The end of the movie depicts the New York Draft Riots, in which men who had been treated like dirt and lived in desperate poverty except for the rule of gangs (The Irish and Minorities) were drafted to fight for the union.
