The warring firefighters thing is actually pretty spot on. Before firefighters were a public institution they were basically protection rackets, gangs who would only fight fires if they were paid to, and they weren't above starting fires themselves, or looting. Everything in the movie is heightened a bit, with the possible exception of the draft riots which was a big event, but there's a lot of wild real history that gets briefly touched on.

Don’t think this is just made up for the movies; this is NYC history. Right down to the firefighter squads brawling over who got to put out the fires. Tammany Hall, the Democrat machine, ballot stuffing and beatdowns at the ballot boxes, the Irish and nativist gangs, 100 round bare knuckle boxing (yes, the rounds were short), pickpockets and confidence men, the Draft Riots, cops being hit with bricks from rooftops, billy clubs breaking skulls, and the cavalry firing into the crowds. This stuff shaped what NYC would become, attitudes and culture. And this movie did a great job portraying it.

Irish were really despised in a lot of places. Viewed as sub-humans of a bad lineage. This movie takes place not long after the potato famine, which was essentially a pseudo-genocide, or perhaps not so "pseudo" considering various enactments by the British worsening the situation tenfold.

Boxing matches before the late 1800s were not considered a sport, so the rules were a lot different. Boxing matches were considered too brutal for a public even so they occurred in private pubic places. like ships, warehouses, saloons. Boxing matches were bare knuckle boxing, and they went on as long as it took for a boxer to be beaten. There were no breaks when a boxer hit the floor. A boxer could continue to pummel his opponent after a slip, fall, or being knocked to the ground. Fighting in general was considered brutal because breaking a bone before modern hospitals were invented could mean a slow death for a person. It wasn't discovered until the 1860s that washing your hands before treating a wound prevented cuts, gouges, and other injuries from becoming infected, turning gangrene, and ending someone's life.

The ground where the main focus of this street battle was, is where the State and Federal courthouses are now, in lower Manhattan. They encompass one of the burial grounds for slaves in NY. In fact, as was shown in the movie, that was once the most dillapidated area of Manhattan. But it was also the most occupied, as very few lived above 14th street. The impoverished were left to build houses/apartments over the bodies of slaves. This was re-told as NY discovered slave burial plots throughout lower Manhattan. The work in re-doing Federal Plaza was halted as the remains of those discovered were categorized and sent to Howard Univeristy for additional research. Then a ceremony was put on by the City of NY to re-inter the remains. A plaque indicates it by Duane st.

Fire brigades were closer to a protection racket, where opposing brigades would race to extort the poor person who wasnt already under their "insurance plan". Only after you've seen 2 DDL movies do you realize his quality. Cause of how different his characters are. He's not like most actors who just play themselves in everything. Too bad he retired but getting just Plainview & Cutting is already more than any most any other modern actor could give us in a lifetime honestly. Scorsese was on point here too. Then with his The Departed & Boardwalk Empire. His last really strong period & he probably shoulda retired then too heheh

Enjoyed yall reaction to one of my favorite movies Gangs of New York. The irony here is that Daniel Day Lewis won Best Actor Oscar for playing Abraham Lincoln, yet his Bill the butcher character hates Lincoln. 😂 Most of this movie was based on true events. Martin Scorsese put in years of research for Gangs of New York. Boardwalk Empire is a MUST see period piece HBO gangsta series set in Atlantic City, NJ during the 1920's. Martin Scorsese and Malk Wahlberg are the producers. Steve Buscemi gives the best performance of his career in Boardwalk Empire as gangster/businessman Nucky Thompson who runs Atlantic City.

As I sit here in my 60's, looking back on a previous life full of stupid decisions and a sustained, regularly fed life of rage and violence (for reasons I still do not understand or justify), this film really hit home. Obviously nothing I experienced was to the degree of this movie, those were an entirely different breed of human beings, however I can tell you fighting a man with a blade is VERY different in all ways from using a firearm or fists or anything else. You can smell them, you can clearly see into their eyes, you can hear them breathing, you can feel their body heat. And when the blade cuts or penetrates it does something to your autonomic nervous system that nothing else does, whether you are the one bleeding, or they are, and once that floods into your system everything else around you stops. It is brutal, it is ugly, it is even sickeningly intimate in a bizarre way. Your body revolts but your lizard brain wants more, and more, and more until they are down or you are finished. Over those years I lost two junks out of my hand, I was in hospital four times, bleeding out, I had a total of 71 stitches, and I have nerve damage to the right side of my face. To this day, even though all that is far behind me and I abhor violence, if I smell blood it all comes back, that archaic part of my brain wakes up and I am both disgusted and confused, but I cannot claim it is not there. Treat your fellow humans properly and with respect, people, because at some point these regrets will eat you alive from the inside. It is not glory, it is not 'tough', it is a flaw of the human condition.

Funny Formal mentioned this as a series because for me, this is the closest thing in tone I know of I would make a Red Dead show like. Theme I don’t see many talk about that hits me the hardest is that at the end they show the futility of Bill and Amsterdam’s conflict. While we bicker over bs, hatred, prejudice the rich eat off of us and gun us down the instant we lose a threat. Back then though, things could and did happen when the poor rose up. Always felt like a tragically missed opportunity in history (not this specific story since it’s mostly fictional, but there are many like it). Ps: Privatized public service at its best, literally, with the “firefighters”. And yeah, it’s true. No cost to the tax payers lol, they loot their cut. More DDL recs: In the Name of the Father, Last of the Mohicans come to mind
