I have watched 30 of their videos, and listened to their songs many times. If you listen carefully from their earliest songs, you can see a progression and the development of their voice. And they have a definite voice that combines modern themes and old references. One thing that is consistent throughout is that they always sound genuine to who they are, old guys in a modern music genre. It's easy to create a modern vibe, but it's much harder for some young writer to capture the authentic old viewpoint and references. I'm 61, so younger than these dudes by more than a decade, but I catch all kinds of things that only old people talk about and their sensibilities. Sure, you could have a very talented writer(s) writing their stuff, but they would have to be very, very good. It is much harder to fake an evolution from rather unrefined and simple lyrics in their first songs (like "Shut your mouth") where they're trying too hard to be modern, and not enough to be themselves, to the more sophisticated breakaway hits of Sindhu Sesh and this Plugged In with Fumez. To fake that evolution, to fake being two old guys finding their voice, to the more complex rhymes and bars of their more recent work, especially after Pete's cancer treatments (Longthorne Shotgun and later), would require an extremely talented writer. My opinion is that they are the primary writers, but do get help now and then, as all artists tend to do. Their grandsons/nephews Nine and Dex (Nine-One Shots and Handsome Dexter) are not just their producers, but I suspect help collaborate a bit more. But I don't think they're the writers, because when you listen to their own songs (like Pecan Pie by Nine and Dex), the lyrics don't have the same sophistication and subtlety of Pete and Bas. So, I'm in the camp that you have two very talented guys here. We do know that one was a professional musician (Bas) and the other may or may not have also played in a ska band (Pete), and so their musicality, breath control, and lyricism is not a huge leap. Regardless, they are supremely entertaining, and just getting better.

Thank you for articulating this. My argument is simply "if someone else is writing all their shit, why isn't anybody else out there this good?" But the artistic progression is a huge nuance and it's not something I think would even occur to a ghostwriter _to_ fake, to say nothing of being worth the effort. I'm only 45 but I still catch exactly how different their references are (re: your comment on sensibilities). Great comment!!!

I think one of the main things is a lot of American reactors don't fully understand the importance an sheer history of Cockney Rhyming Slang. It's a massive part of the culture of the area they grew up in, and would've been something that they were both exposed to - one of the lines is "Get dark bruises all up in that leaky boat" - boat, in this case, is "Boat race", which is rhyming slang for face. All of their verses are scattered with massive amounts of rhyming slang. From what I know, they do write it all themselves, with assistance from 91 and Dex who provide them assistance with modern day slang and terminology, but their references in the verses are not things that would be known by people not their age - there are lines in one of their other songs (Stepped Into The Building), which references specific fragrances for gentlemen of culture that just aren't really known.... The fact that Bas is also a talented jazz musician and multi-instrumentalist helps too!

The producers, 91 Shots and Handsome Dexter, are their grandsons. Pete and Bas said they write with help from their grandsons with modern slang. The grandsons recently put out their own song/video as Nine and Dex called 'Pecan Pie'. They even look and sound similar to Pete and Bas, you can tell right away theyre closely related.

Brit here who lives in Chicago … one of my guilty pleasures is watching Americans react to these two legends ! I put many a old school hiphop heads onto these two legend here in Chicago and they are riding around Chicago bumping Pete and bas ! They love it 😂😂😂😂 But…, once They break down the London slang and the context of the lyrics it takes on a whole new level of how god tier these fellas are with it ! For example the first 16 … “ Bop to the shop with a big Kebab and and a can of larger ( a kebab shop is kind of like bodega but owned by Turkish people ) Boss man knows me I’ll be back tomorrow ( the kebab man is always referred to as bossman ) … with a stack full of pinkies ( pinkies being the London term for twenty pound notes ) for the drop last week ( Turks love a drug deal “allegedly “) and a couple of shots of the neat , cutting up deals ( cutting up the brick ) on the business meet ( no need to explain…) The whole track is full of sick bars but my thumbs don’t have the strength to break it all down !!! 😂😂😂😂 Glad you appreciate these two ❤❤

I tell ya its harder to rap someone elses lyrics and they don't rap the same these two so I'll stick with they do it themsleves. Big up 9 n Dex for the beats their very own Dr Dre. Story goes Pete wanted to do a rap track for his granddaughters birthday. He used to pick her up from school and she always changed the station to a hip hop one. He got to like hip hop (he was into ska in his younger days) and Sindhu World (Bal convenience store owner/91 Shots/Handsome Dexter) got together with him and Bas (a friend I think, maybe from some law stuff back in Pete's past) to do Shut Ya Mouth. If you check out that video its very basic but its the start of the journey. They done like 40 tracks now.

I think they come up w/themes and ideas and some words, some of the phrases they use in their rap is very dated for just their nephews in their 20's to be using. No doubt their nephews help them, but to what extent is the question. Either way what they are doing is skilled, you cannot give these lyrics to anyone and have a successful song come out of it.

6:56 - "Tiocfaidh ar la" = "Our day will come", the motto of Sinn Fein and the IRA. It sounds like "chocky ar la", so that is a sick bar "One side of the family's Irish - 'tiocfaidh ar la' if he's taking the Mic(k)". Taking the mick is taking the piss, but mick is also slang for Irish person. ONE side of the family's Irish in the middle of a Troubles bar? WHAT?!
