Gantz is *such* an underrated manga, and this video essay was *so* well done. I really do hope this gets picked up by the algorithm sooner than later!

@jotsu4491Ай бұрын
It's not Underrated, it is just good for what it is. Gantz was at its peak back when it came out and that's how it got an anime adaptation (which was terrible :/ ) and even though it's been quiet few years since it ended, the manga it's still well known and so is Hiroya Oku, his style is just unique (for female characters mostly lol).

Hiroya Oku's portrayal of humans in Gantz is compelling because he doesn't sugarcoat how deep and dark human nature can be when they are given the power to kill. Every character in this story has a messed-up background story.
@thiscouldbeeric79952 ай бұрын
Before I watch this vid I just need to say this. Gantz is in my top 10. I know it has its flaws but I just think when Gantz is good, it’s really f**kin good. Shoutout Osaka arc. But it was thru Gantz that I decided to dive into the works of Camus, the idea of absurdity, and what it means to live. Everything that happened in Gantz could very well happen to us today, it’s just a matter of when. But even when it happens, we must never forget to live, if not for ourselves, then for them.

What I remember most is that eventually the characters get to meet ~God and they ask it actual questions like what's the purpose of life, and the God actually answers back without backing down and giving a vague lame reply like I've seen in so many other series.
@mugenbop2 ай бұрын
Essentially they meet beings that dispel that any gods exist and they only sent the gantz technology because they thought fuck it, not because they cared about humanity. I think the strong point of the scene just instills in us that we could have easily been enslaved by the aliens because some cosmic beings were like yeah sure give them the guns. It’s not so much god but aliens with power beyond what we can comprehend
@okularnik125Ай бұрын
It wosnt God it was just higher adanced civilization that understood base of life and doesnt think that such construct at soul exist and living beings are just mess of bio mass and information of memories and personality that they can replicate. Technicaly every time they got teleported in series they died, they been deconstructed and constructed somewhere else. Its the old sci fi teleport paradox. When they learned how teleportation worked they were horrified becasue they werent sure if they are even themselfs anymore or just clones with same memories. Its quite interesting

My favourite panel is right before Kei and Kato are transported to the 3rd mission. We see them each in their own room, Kato thinks how he doesn't want to go back to the missions, and we see his brother whom he cares alot for, while Kei on the other hand wants to go back, yet his room feels empty, he just doesn't have anyone or anything he cares about at this point.

@scales876828 күн бұрын
@@NigerDeltaCommunist I am 35. I read Gantz as an adoloescent. It was awesome, one of the best manga I've ever read. But we kinda grew afraid of Gen Z reaction over anything we could have loved in our childhood to be called out and go in the same spiral again of seeing something that you loved be deemed innapropriate by twitter in a matter of days. No offense, but Berserk had its twitter Gen Z drama, even DBZ. No matter the message or the form, there is always something wrong that should be erased from history and people who love the content be labelled as creeps so ... No offense on yougers generations, we (and that is a hypothetical we, I mainly talk for myself ofc) just grew tired of this. Cancel Hammer is just exhausting.

I initially found Gnatz through the netflix movie about the Okinawa night, then I found the anime online. It was years later I got a manga app and read it very quickly. This breakdown was great. It really dug down deep into the confusion of esistance and how to find purpose. That's what the story really culminated to. PEOPLE FINDING PURPOSE TO EXIST AND LIVE. My bad im typing at a weird angle. I think i'll buy the books and read again.

I love Gantz. It was one of the first Senein I ever read many years ago. I just felt that the story kind of got dumb and was rushed toward the end, and it seemed as if Oku didn't really know how to end it so he just winged it, leaving some loose ends like what exactly the Vampire's were. Another thing that bothered me was the pacing becomes unbearable in the final arc, although that probably was because I was reading it week to week and there were some weeks where the chapters were like 10 pages long with huge 2 page spreads taking up most of the page count.

I went from hating him so much I wanted him to get eaten by monsters to loving him so much I felt terrible seeing him get even a little scratch on him haha. This series is great. It’s vulgar and shameless, but also exciting, fascinating and emotionally intense at the same time.

I remember reading that Hiroya Oku was given new cartoon modelling software by his editor and proceeded to use it to create GANTZ. I could tell from the content that he was indulging himself, but the longer the series went on, the more serious it became, and then there are the little references that the reader could recognize if they read the right material

The story more goes he spent all his savings to make 3D CG manga and zero one was the first of that only to be cancelled. Facing bankruptcy Gantz was his last chance, and as it succeeded and technology evolved so did the other entities he put on the page :)

My favorite arcs of Gantz are the ones where Kei doesn't have his suit and really shows the strength of the indomitable human spirit, to use modern vernacular. In the Tanaka arc, Kei proves his determination to survive against all odds in contrast to Nishi who cannot keep up without his suit. In the dinosaur arc, Kei showed the ability to not just survive without his suit, but also protect the people around him. We see how impossible such a thing should be through Izumi, a veteran, being absolutely flabbergasted at this feat. In the vampire arc, initially without any memories of his life or death battles, he absolutely bodies a shit ton of vampires and only gets fucked when they distract him with his brother's death, even the vampires start to doubt a human can pull that kind of thing off. I can't say Gantz is my favorite series, but it defined for me that I don't care if a character is an overdog or an underdog, the best characters are the ones who can actually convince you that they can do anything, not because the plot says so, but because they prove it time and time again in tandem with or in spite of the plot.

**Spoilers ahead for people that don't wanna read it** .. .. .. One thing that I loved about Gantz was the dilemma of what makes you really you when they find out about the rules for Gantz to revive someone. The girl that was cloned during a suicide attempt but realizes that the original survived was one hell of a concept. Plus the moment that the main character learns to work with its another one of his clones. I think Gantz deserve its place next to other Sci-Fi Classics such as Akira. Does it has issues? Definitely, but it brought something unique. (edit, writing this while listening the video, laughing when the subject was brought 15 seconds after posting. hahahaha)
