I'm reminded of RAF and Japanese prototypes and trainers with yellow undersides, usually with camouflaged uppersurfaces. That´s right in IL 2 the range endurance is quite exaggerated. Usually the planes go much furhter than they could do in fact. For my BoB missions i always lower my Emil fuel tank to 50% to better simulate the range issues they used to have in 1940. So no wonder that the Thunderbolt goes straight to Berlim with the extra fuel tank! "Horrido" Fishyyy!

DF and CY6 have done it, people. Strategic bombing is a thing now. The AI works nearly flawlessly and we can make many long bomber missions. Strange/funny how the FW-190 had similar nicknames in german and english/american. Boengtöter or boeng killer is quite similar to "Butcher bird". Great Video and thanks for the subtitles, my german is severely lacking.

48:33 Was so eine B-17 an Treffern aushält, Wahnsinn, waren diese Ungetüme wirklich so heftig gepanzert? Soweit ich weiß, war die FW190 A-6 auch mit 20mm Kanonen bewaffnet (später 30mm), aber selbst da brauchte es so und soviel direkte Treffer für einen erfolgreichen Abschuss.

B-17 waren nicht sonderlich stark gepanzert, aber sehr robust gebaut. Historisch brauchte man durchschnittlich 20 - 25 20mm Treffer um eine abzuschießen. 30mm Treffer brauchte es nur 3.

The propeller is such a continuum breaking thing it seems, and I get that it's just how the game/replays work. But why! In the end there were 3 different propeller states for Momo on the airfield. From your point of view it was turning slowly. From his 1st person it was stopped. From his 3rd person it was stopped but at a different angle. So bizarre.

35:39 contrails ... it would seem proper if some of the bombers were not in condensing altitude such as the low group and the high group was then it makes sense. IIRC one B17 pilot, the group/wing leader, noticed that they were at a condensing altitude, producing contrails, and brought them to a lower non condensing altitude to make it harder for the German fighters to see them. They could see contrails from the fighters, but the fighters missed them that day.

So I guess it depended on how experienced the group leader was. Although another factor might be that if there were a large number of groups in the bomber stream, and they all had mandated altitudes for defensive reasons, the individual group leaders might not have had the authority to change their altitudes, affecting defence of other groups - contrails or no contrails.

Eleven minutes in before I got a hint that whoever prepared them wasn't a native English speaker; and some of the later spelling mistakes were the same ones I'd have expected a native English speaker to make. Not perfect then, but f****** close. Hmm. Was that "Sauber" or "Zauber" after you both attacked the same bomber?

P47s reach Berlin? Maybe but then no time to fight. Not until the P47N or maybe the P47M. And those were mostly used in the Pacific. By the time they were available the P47s were mostly being used for ground attack and no longer for bomber escort

ret7army With a drop tank, the large 400 U.S. gallon one, The radius of the P47 could reach as far as Stuttgart, after D-day, with units moved to forward airfields in France, P47s with drop tanks could and did fly to Berlin and the slaughter of the Jagdwaffe really began, more German pilots were killed by P47s ( including some flying ME262 jets) than any other allied fighter on the western front.

Not true, the p47’s could escort bombers all the way to Berlin and back even before the Merlin powered p51 came on the scene in large numbers. It was a matter of politics and the incompetence of the USAAF and the bomber mafia. Watch Gregg airplanes and automobiles channel, he has a fantastic video on this

I understand why they attacked the bombers in this fashion, then fly ahead to do it again. It just seemed to be so... Well, counter productive. You manage to hit 2-3 bombers, but in the end, it's not enough to really have an effect. And then, you lose your own aircraft... Just a broken engine, or a dead pilot. The results are the same, a plane out of action...

@@Fishyyy Agreed Fishyyy. I'm not saying that an attack from behind is the obvious 'plan B.' But I had fairly good luck, at attacking bombers from the 1-2 o'clock high position, and then running my guns along the wings, or just concentrating on a wing. As I approached the bomber, I raked the wings, then pulled back up and to the 10-11 O'clock position, by the bomber's direction. I stayed above the bomber, limiting myself to the top turret, that mostly couldn't keep up with my speed. Maybe a waist gunner took a shot at me, but by then, I was already extending away from the bomber. Now, the positions I mention, are by the bomber's direction, not my own. After a couple minutes, I was able to repeat this maneuver, in the opposite direction, on the same bomber. After raking the bomber back and forth a couple times, was usually enough to set fires, take out engines, and even destroy the wings, causing wing failure. Sure, the only down side would be the other bombers in the group, getting to fire at you. But like you guys did, you pick out the one on the edge of the group, or the one lagging behind.

Their jargon was period correct for the most part. I've seen most of those phrases in books written by German pilots.
