This is how I shoot my compound. 40 years w/o pins. Thanks for putting into words my thought process. Point on is 48-50 yards. I tried string walking. Works fine for targets. But sucks for hunting. If critter moves, sucks to try and move to correct strand.

I shot gap "at the target" for years and it worked. Instinctive gap is real. Then Gary McCain explained gap "at the bow" on a forum I was on. It's really gap "at the arrow" and works good for me who looks at a tape measure all day. Instead of 10 or 20 inches of gap at the target, I now see 1/4", 1/2", up to 1-1/4" gap right over the collar. So, my point on is 40 yards, at 35 yds. I have a sight picture with point 1/4" below, then 3/8" at 30 yds., 1/2" at 25 yds. etc. Shoot them all right down to 5 yards and get that sight picture burned into the ole brain. This also turns into instinctive gap pretty naturally. Big Kifaru fan here, thanks for all you do.

Dude I never thought about short stroking making the arrow longer. I knew knew short drawing would put less power into the arrow. But the addition of the lower hold from the longer arrow blew my mind hole. #tradongle

I recently started using the back of my broadhead blade as point on and anchoring with either ring, middle, or pointer fingers. It works out to be 20yds, 25 yds, 30 yds with a 550 grain arrow. Any downside to this?

Love to see you shooting the trad bow! I’ve watched you shoot before, much better shot than me. I also shoot instinctively under 20 yards and gap for farther shots. Fortunately for me, I live in the east and am always shooting under 20. Lol

How in the hell are you guys getting a 30+ yd point on shooting 3under and a high anchor? Every bow I own is between 15-20 yds anchoring at my cheek bone, hell when I anchor at the corner of my mouth it's only around 25-30 yds with a light/fast setup.

I wish someone would do a video on adjusting right and left. I have shot gap for years and tried many different things and if I put the tip below the target I am always left.

What if my gap is to the right? I'm sure it has something to do with the length of arrow, diameter of arrow and how close to center the shelf is cut....it would be easier if I had a 'point on situation'.

How do you determine what angle to hold your bow at, and how do you make that consistent?
@aronsnyder9487

I didn’t really determine it. It’s what came natural.

You must be shooting a higher poundage bow and lighter arrows 9.5 to 10 grains per pound with 3/8 ths nock height to get a point on of 38 yards? Thank you for the video and great info

56 lbs 580 grains. Pretty much what I’ve always shot and pretty close to the distance I always have for my point on.

My heavier bows I get a point on at 25 yards. 20 yards I aim 4 inches low, 30 yards I aim 4 inches high so I'm never aiming off a whitetail deer's body. I hunt southern Ontario Canada so my shots are closer than yours out of my tree stands

Aaron must have a lower anchor point than you making him have a higher point of aim, not all situations are the same. If you use your index finger in the corner of your mouth a 40 yard point is quite reasonable.

I "cheat" by marking a 20 yard and 10 yard mark on my riser. I dont compete so I really dont give a shit but its a system that has worked for me. More or less a 3 pin aiming system. I still have to put my arrow point on the initial spot then I adjust until the line is lined up and then I cut it from there. So for a 15 yard shot I am in between between the 20-10 yard mark. For anything closer I am close enough. Great video.

I guess you can shoot gap split finger as well but seems to take away the the whole romance out of instinctive shooting for me. I guess it’s like choosing wood over carbon or aluminum. Even though I shoot a laminated fiberglass longbow with wood arrows and split finger, I feel like I’m cheating myself on a important element of traditional archery and it’s simplicity of pointing and releasing and not thinking about distance. For hunting it’s quick and easy

Shooting the method that works best for you in a hunting situation is definitely good advice. I’ve had really good success using this method. It would be pretty hard for me to go back to shooting instinctive as it wasn’t as lethal for me in all situations.

A lot of people seem to think instinctive shooting is more traditional but I just don't think that's true at all. I haven't seen any proof that way back when bows were the weapon of choice people didn't aim
