Thanks for the response. Your video at 840 mins I like that you took care of the donut; That thing when dry will resonate through the torsion tube (like a moist finger on a wine glass rim) sending a high ringing squeak that is difficult to locate for those "not knowing" of it. The person servicing the door sometimes will lube "EVERYTHING" to stop it and never find it!. What's really sad is when they take a bucket of axel grease and fill the track with it! What a mess to work with for the next tech that has to reset a slipped a lift cable. In my 50 years in this garage door service work, that my friend is a "LEPER DOOR". Ruined a lot of nice uniforms, truck upholstery, working on those.

Our garage door bound up when opening or closing. I looked at the door and it had a repairman use a sheetmetal screw instead of a bolt in the bottom bracket of the right side of my garage door. The whole bracket was cockeyed and rubbing against the rail for the rollers. When I saw this I thought I could just loosed the screw replace it with a bolt and hook back up the cable I had to remove to put the bracket back on. Well.... not exactly. Now I have the bracket on but am at least 9" from the bottom of the bracket where the cable hooks on. Can I unhook the garage door from the carriage? The door is very heavy. A 22' x 9' wooden door. The carriage is twisted and I'm concerned that it won't straighten without help. Can I release it from the carriage, push it all the way up and then reconnect the cable, taking up any extra length by wrapping it around the cable pulley? If the carriage is twisted can I take off the arm that rides on the track and straighten it using a vise and hammer? I hope you read this and can help me, as I plan to move forward tomorrow ( rather later today) on this project. TIA. KaCe

Very informative video, thank you for making this. I was trying to fix my own garage door that had this similar thing happen, but when I was trying to put the cable back on the pulley, the end came off, so not only is it loose now but the end piece is out of the little groove/notch area. Thank you.
@ALLProGarageDoors9 жыл бұрын
twinsmama15 So here's what you do...vise grip the door (under the roller on the slack side...and above the roller on the tight side) so that it's totally level and feed the cable back into the notch, wind it around the grooves until the loop at the bottom is very close to the knob on the bottom bracket the snap it back on the knob and you should be ok. But!! your door has to be level first.
@twinsmama159 жыл бұрын
All-Pro Quality Garage Doors Inc. Thank you very much for your reply. I am going to give this a try, see if I can get it level first, that is definitely a problem.
@ALLProGarageDoors9 жыл бұрын
Well when a cable comes off one side but not the other the door goes crooked and the side with the tight cable has to be held in place while the loose side is raised, naturally when you raise the loose side the tight side will want to go up as well that's why the use of vise grips to lock the door from raising further on the tight side is essential while another pair of vise grips on the underside of the roller on the loose side is used to hold that side from falling. You can use clamps with the same effect if you have any.
@twinsmama159 жыл бұрын

Maybe I'm putting too much thought into this, but, what happens when the cable is a rats nest? If you loosen the drum , the spring on the opposite side will cause the shaft to slide over , causing the spring to bind when closing the door. I would vise grip outside the end bearing plate on the other side to prevent that from happening. Also, maybe it was the bearing on the side of the slipped cable that caused this problem when the door opened too far. That was a lot of wear on the shaft to the left of the bearing.
@ALLProGarageDoors9 жыл бұрын
techman0113 Spun cables have so many variables and so many different ways to get the cable back on, you could also vise grip the roller so the door won't fall and take the cable off the knob of the bottom bracket then unfurl the rats nest and wrap in back onto the hub (drum) and then click it back over the knob on the bottom bracket. If you have groove wear on the tube then if your skills were good you could move the tube a few inches in either direction to get away from the wear spot.

I'm. Garage door guy with over 20 years to my name. I work on the big stuff not the kindergarten stuff although the principal is the same. I can say that firstly NEVER remove your bars unless both pins are tight secondly, the wire ropes if crossed on the drum will lock up and could sustain damage. Also the rope may already be damaged and should have been checked prior to reuse. As a matter of safety it would only be good practice and prudent to replace both ropes should any potential damage have occurred. I'm a positive note the fix worked and worked well. But perhaps highlighting the dangers of torsion springs would have been a good idea.?
@ALLProGarageDoors7 жыл бұрын
You know it's never gonna be a good comment when someone starts out telling you how much experience they have. But the viewer of this video must always take into consideration...the circumstances and situation for which I'm there in the first place, the renter was moving out and jacked the door as he was moving so he's not going to replace anything he doesn't absolutely have to and he wasn't even home when I did the repair and since the "ropes"... we call em cables are rated for hundreds of pounds more than the door actually weighs I'm not going to replace unless they are frayed. Yes if you are doing this for yourself and would like the peace of mind then sure..if it makes you feel better then replace em. As far as the dangers of a torsion spring door, I really wouldn't worry about it since it's just kindergarten stuff anyway.

Your door should have two cables, but it could have 1 spring.
@AsTheWheelsTurn2 жыл бұрын
I changed my springs recently and following every step properly as far as I understand but for some reason every time the door gets all the way up both cables skin off . anyone have an idea as to why this is happening? yes I am pretensioning the cables before I tension the torsion springs . only thing I can think of is I did get bigger /longer springs and they are strong enough that It is able to lift the door with not that many revolutions of tightness so is it possible that as the door goes up the spring unwinds all the way and then actually starts to reverse wind from the garage door opener pulling it the rest of the way ? it lifts super easy for about half way then gets heavy......now that I am writing this I am thinking this is probably what is happening ,the springs are too heavy duty for this door it would want to fly up 3/4 of the way on its own if I wound them enough to revolutions to be appropriate to the door height/travel..... hmmm

For insulated residential doors, do you prefer working on Amarr or Wayne Dalton?
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
Makes no difference to me, they are both nice doors.
@carleefsting89378 жыл бұрын
Makes sense. I've been working on them for almost a year now and they both have their pros and cons. (I do hate the flimsy operator bracket on Wayne Dalton doors, though. They always seem to be breaking.)
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
Well the wayne dalton #9100 is a fairly flimsy door, but if it's strutted properly and the machine has a good reversing system and the door is installed correctly it should last as long as an average door can be expected to. but then again that applies to all doors really, if it's installed correctly even a piece of junk can last a few yrs. On the other hand a really good door can fall apart fairly quickly if it's not put in right to begin with.

Thats a tough call, 1/4 inch isn't much and might not be worth playing with just keep an eye on the door and if it starts acting strange or sounding funny then that might be the time to address that 1/4 inch.

@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
I would consider the Amarr, Stratford 3000 the best steel sectional I've installed. I look for a door that goes together properly without modification, is solid and comes with great hardware. Amarr is a pinch resistant door with the best design, others can't copy it because of patent issues, so they come up with their own version and they suck. There are other good doors but part for part Amarr is the best in my opinion.

I certainly don't know much about quality garage doors, but I damn sure didn't like the crap they use for hinges... I have a question I am sure you can help me with. I have a 16 x7 door on my shop that doesn't have much room to either side, so an opener like a liftmaster 8500 will not fit, but I do need a door opener. Is it ok to place a standard Craftsman or Liftmaster etc, far off to one side? I mean within 2 feet of a side?? I have my door well balanced and it is NOT a CLOPAY POS. I cannot place it in the middle as I am removing the lower half of the trusses to install a lift.. (YES, I have engineered the trusses with double 2x8 SYP peak to foot and all bolted.. No worries there. I would have to make a bracket to capture the top and bottom lips of the top section of door, but I damn sure don't want to do this if I am going to rack the door....

+Steve 1961P. .....Hey there Steve, if your sectional door has "Torsion" springs then you can mount the opener anywhere you want, Torsion springs lift the door evenly from the tube having cables on both sides...the opener is just the motivator that keeps it moving.I've mounted openers all the way to one side before and it's worked fine. The only reason we don't do it more often is simply because the outlets to plug in to are usually in the center. So yes you can easily mount the opener off to one side and be fine.

+All-Pro Quality Garage Doors Inc. FANTASTIC!!!!!! I am a mechanical type and I see it the same as you, but obviously you have a million times more experience with this issue. So I am very happy to know it will work fine.. Thank you for the fast response and the free info... 5+ stars for you!!!!! Ps. I watch a lot of YT videos and read many comments. Don't ever take anything the jerks say to heart. They simply have to blow their horn to make themselves feel better.. Schmucks...... Thanks again......

Amen Steve! I don't let the schmucks run smack on my page without getting my two cents in. Not many have as much experience as I do and the few that do don't typically talk crap, it's the rookies that talk all the game but don't bring any. So your good to go on the opener...put it anywhere you want and if you have any problems let me know buddy!!

After watching this video, I wonder if you could help me. I replaced a broken torsion spring and added another figuring that it would make my door opener happy. It was also recommended that I replace the end bearing plates so I am. Problem is that I keep running into the same problem. It's not working AND the cable does not want to stay in the grooves. On both sides it has been wrapping all over the pole like Spiderman's webbing. Any suggestions on why this keeps happening?
@ALLProGarageDoors9 жыл бұрын
+gary defilippo Hi Gary, your problem is actually quite simple...bad advice. you don't need end bearings they never wear out and you can't just add a spring, door springs are rated for weight so they have to be exact and you can't just add an extra one...it doesn't work that way. If you have the wrong springs the cable will just keep coming off, you tell me what door you have and I WILL TELL YOU WHAT SPRING OR SPRINGS YOU NEED.

Yet another great video Mike! Im bit puzzled tho, the sticker on the side of the section said the door was a Clopay. Ive never seen Clopay use that type of hardware before. When were they doing pinch resistant sections? Or was this and old door that Clopay doesn't offer anymore? Your right tho, garbage! It even looked like the hinges used plastic pins to connect them together.
@ALLProGarageDoors10 жыл бұрын
Clopay fell asleep at the wheel somewhere around the time they hooked up with Home Depot...Amarr started making the Dura-Safe hardware and Wayne-Dalton and Martin had pinch resistant doors and Clopay wanted one too but the good designs were patented so they came up with this monstrosity. They have been making the 251 and 151 models for at least 6-8 yrs now...maybe even 10 yrs, and it's bad on so many levels, the pins were steel, and the end hinges took a longer pin than the center hinges and they had the habit of coming out and jamming in the track. The hinges themselves were so light that a small child could bend them with their hands. This door is the "Trac-Drive" of garage doors!!

This just happened to my garage door. I hit the button to open it and it started a "crunching sound". I can see that the wire has come off, just like in your video. Unfortunately, me hitting the button to open it caused it to get lop sided. It won't come all the way down on one side. Can you give me a ball park of what I might expect to pay for a repair?
@ALLProGarageDoors7 жыл бұрын
A professional can re-set your cables AND do a general maintenance in 1/2 an hr...it should run no more than $100.00 maybe another 20.00 if your cables are thrashed.
@ALLProGarageDoors7 жыл бұрын
If the door is lopsided instead of trying to get the high side down...try to get the low side up, but you have to lock one of the rollers on the high side from wanting to go up more as you lift the low side up, it's actually very easy. then when the door is even push the high side down and inch at a time keeping the door level and although the high side will be hard to push it will go down with pressure, the key is keeping the door level.
@nicke23077 жыл бұрын
Question for you. I have a similar garage door and when its been sitting closed for a while, when i go to open it, it doesnt open and it explodes open. Then after that it opens and closes just fine until it sits closed again for a day or more. I lubricated the rollers and everything. Not sure if maybe the track is uneven or misaligned
@ALLProGarageDoors7 жыл бұрын
nick elias sounds like something has been painted... either the door itself or the vinyl trim and when it sits for a period of time the paint re-seals itself and locks the door in place. If your door has been painted the put some lube in between the sections. If not check the trim on the outside to see if paint has overlapped the trim and is in contact with the door.

All-Pro Quality Garage Doors Inc. ahhhhhhh! i think youre on to something. i just moved into my.house and the people before me did paint the door. they mustve painted over the hinges. im going to try and what you said. thank you!!!!!
@ALLProGarageDoors7 жыл бұрын
nelias7306 its not typically the hinges... its the sections themselves so open the door until the sections separate and lube the gaps in between each section, this might or might not be a permanent solution but if it works for a while atleast you'll know for sure what the problem is. From there you can scrape or sand the excess paint off next time it starts sticking. Do this from the outside, thats where you'll find the problem.

How do you give tension on the left side line that dismounted? The right side has good tension and working, but the left keeps popping off because it is loose. I'm assuming both lines were installed using same length.
@ALLProGarageDoors6 жыл бұрын
Maybe don’t have the door open so high.
@Montery126 жыл бұрын
Thanks for answering. As you know, the door opens as high as it goes electrically, which is all the way back over. The left side is still loose at the bottom once on the grove. What causes that? As you describe on your vid, the right side is nice and tight and the left loose, that is my situation (except as noted, the left, loose wire was mounted on properly but still has a slack, that shouldn't be there. That slack is causing not only to get the wire jump off again, but to get the door stuck once is coming down (which can damage other parts!). What is causing this slack? Thanks again for trying to help me (if it all fails will have to call a pro).
@ALLProGarageDoors6 жыл бұрын
Montery12 most doors will run out of spring tension at just over 7ft so your door opener should stop the door just as it clears the header, not much more.

Just curious since I have no experience in installing or repairing garage doors, can you tell me what purposes do those 2 cables on each end of a garage door do? Tnx
@ALLProGarageDoors7 жыл бұрын
James Wise they lift the door, theres a knob on the bottom of the door that the cables attach to and the spring turns the tube as it unwinds... lifting the door.
@TheJared14457 жыл бұрын
James Wise they're basically attached to the bar for the main spring. the main spring lifts the weight of the garage door

Thanks for this video! I was able to get my cable back on quickly. If this is a problem that keeps happening, is it usually that the springs need winding because the one side is loose?
@ALLProGarageDoors5 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily, It could be springs...I wouldn't rule that out but there are several reasons this happens...it could be your door is going up too high, set your opener to stop maybe a few inches lower and that should keep tension on the cables.
@billhooley95825 жыл бұрын
@@ALLProGarageDoors thank you. This door was replaced just over a year ago and the last week the one side has had the cable come off three times. When I called the installer he wanted nearly 100 dollars to come look at it. I'm frustrated because it was only 13 months ago I replaced everything on it. He said the springs could have lost tension but said I shouldn't do it.
@ALLProGarageDoors5 жыл бұрын
@@billhooley9582 I had a door like that yesterday myself and the problem was that the tracks were un-even, the right side was 1-1/2 inches lower than the left so I brought the door down and leveled it then measured from the top of the door to the gap where the two tracks (horizontal and vertical)are bolted together...that measurement should be the same. At 1-1/2 inches different the cables would never stay on. Sounds like this guy doesn't know what he's doing which is no surprise, oil dipped springs don't lose tension and galvanized springs are supposed to be wound enough to be springy so when they do lose tension in roughly ten months that the door will now be balanced...only a rookie wouldn't compensate for that.

I could use some help on my garage door. I have a similar situation to this one. The house that I bought has an old wooden garage door, it has 2 torsion springs, and the cable was snapped on one side, and came off on the other side. I don't have the money to have someone do the work, so have been researching how to do it myself. I realize the danger involved. So I have been doing as much research as I can before considering finally how to fix the door. I have the replacement cables and winding bars. And I have some questions. ---- The torsion springs still should be set to the correct tension, since the set key was never loosened. So how should I go about replacing the cables in your opinion? Should I fully unwind the torsion springs as my first step and then start the installation from scratch?
@ALLProGarageDoors9 жыл бұрын
+capoman1 Yes I would start from scratch, sometimes trying to work with the way it is, can be worse. So replace the cables then since the cables were originally already off the springs will simply shrink when you loosen the set screws. Loosen the set screws on the "hubs" (the big pulleys that hold the cables) as well then feed the cable on to one of the hubs and tighten the set screw, then pull the cable tight and lock it in place with vice grips and do the same on the other hub. The hubs should be right up against the bearing plates when you tighten them. Once both cables are tight then you can proceed to winding the springs, if you count each hole in the cone as one then it would be considered a quarter turn...for 7ft high doors start with 29-30 quarter turns and then set the "set screw" and move on to the next spring and do the same, you might find the door heavy or even springy so you can take off or add a few more winds to get it just right. The key to doing this correctly is getting the cables tight and locked in place before winding the springs, make sure you have the springs on the proper side otherwise you are winding backwards. Give that a shot and let me know if you have any other questions.
@capoman19 жыл бұрын
Alright, thanks so much. I will check back in now that I know how to proceed. Just got first snow and would love to be able to park in the garage.

what if one of the rollers on the other side of dorr where cable came off. the top roller cane off what do I do
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
Ashley Wehrlen if the door goes crooked usually the top roller on one side and the bottom roller on the opposite side will come out. Putting the top roller back in is easy, first you have to get the door level then undo the 7/16 nut that holds the roller bracket in, take the bracket off... put the roller back in it and the track and tighten it back down.

thank you your awesome! we got it thanks to your video and quick response help! one more quick question how do you fix bent up track so it doesn't come back off
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
Ashley Wehrlen the track... especially the vertical track is easy, the horizontal track you can just tap back into shape with a hammer or if it has a long bend just pull it in the opposite direction. The vertical depending how bad it looks can be fixed by opening the door then completely removing the vertical and tap it back into shape, the vertical track is just a guide and doesn't have to be anywhere close to perfect to work... the horizontal track is slightly more critical but has to remain in place as you tap it with a hammer or pull it back to shape.

Can you still close the door if the wire came off
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
Yes but if one side still has the cable on and under tension then you have to lift the side of the door that the cable is off and push down on the side the cable is still on so that the door goes down evenly and level, if you don't get the door level it won't go down. You have to do this slowly inches at a time or the top roller will pop out.
