Great Videos from you. Thank You, Sir. It would greatly help if you comment on why such situations happen. Why does the door buckle and how did your repair help correct the problem.
@dapperdudesgarage Жыл бұрын
It can be one of a few reasons. It mostly happens due to homeowner error. Such as storing things in the corner by the garage door tracks and those objects fall in the way as the garage door is shutting and causing the cables to come off. It also happens when the customer backs out before the door is raised all the way and hit the door. Another common reason is broken garage door spring. If there is only one spring then once it breaks there is nothing holding the tension anymore so the door is in free-fall mode. Lastly, it could be old age of the garage door components. After arriving and inspecting the door and carrying out diagnostics, depending on what I find is how I begin to offer recommendations.
@steavfcongdon Жыл бұрын
I know you got this done. What I would have thought to do is support the upper panel with straps. Then immobilize the spring. Take the door apart from the bottom up. Then reassemble. I would think that would remove some of the risk of the door shifting and falling.

@@robertduncan2607 Thanks man. No, I didn’t replace a single parts. I just had to take the vertical tracks off and kind of prefabricate them there on site with some pliers and a hammer,lol. This job in all honesty took me about two hours. Maybe 2 and a half because I had to go slow and really be safe. So had to think about pressure and release points etc. But, the guy paid me $649 to do all that and save his door so not too bad.

Do you recommend two torsion springs on a 12' door with insulation?
@dapperdudesgarage15 сағат бұрын
@@dughify for sure if the door is heavy enough. Also if you got the springs two will work great. Of course depending in how heavy the door and insulation is… you could likely get by with two 25-28” 207’s
@dughify14 сағат бұрын
@dapperdudesgarage after 30 yrs of use, I had one 250x2x30 on a 12' that broke. I'm in the process of putting it all back together with 2 new springs of the same dimensions instead of one. I added two 12' struts bc of sag. I weighed the door at about 130lbs. Not sure if there's overkill as far as torsion springs are concerned. Thanks for your reply.
@jessebadbass86689 сағат бұрын
@@dughify Hey, there is absolutely a such thing as overkill. Matter of fact, if anything, you would rather undershoot the size of spring rather than overshoot. Over shooting is going to throw the balance way off. It could to such a point the opener won't even close due to the uplifting pressure. You can't take the tension off either to reduce the uplifting force because your cables will come off. So, it's best to undershoot a little because if anything you can add more tension on the springs which will only further tighten your cables.
@dughify6 сағат бұрын
@jessebadbass8668 by coincidence, I was watching the Wayne Dalton vid earlier today and think you mentioned something about that. Now that I have everything together, now the door only opens 4ft, then binds. If I force it up further the cables come off ( just like you said ) I thought for sure I had equal tension on the springs and cables. Is it possible the bearings in the springs are bolted too tight to the center bracket. I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks
@dapperdudesgarage4 сағат бұрын
@ no man, the bearings and how tight the springs are bolted to the center plate have nothing to do with a springs lifting force. That only makes things safer. Its simply the springs have to be the right size.

Bro...I hate PPE but, you should really think about at least some safety glasses when you're strapping stuff like that. Just in case something flies loose my brother. You only got one set of eyes. I knew you were good enough to fix this one amigo. Hey! Ive got a question for you: Before you removed the last panel, how did you handled the tension of the springs Did you take off the tension bedore you released them from the vice grips? Because I suppose the last panel still had the cable tensioned.

Is he going to put a opener on the door
@dapperdudesgarage Жыл бұрын
i asked him, he said maybe later but right now he couldn’t that’s why he said if i could save his door and not have to get a new one he would pay me decent bc he couldn’t afford a new door at the time. He said the lowest quote he got on a new door was $1300 so i offered to fix it for $600 out the door and he agreed. So in his mind i saved him $700. We all win!
