Just finished my double garage door. At $89 a kit (two required for 16' x 7' door) is worth it. I found the it hard to open garage door with one spring, so I upgraded and installed double springs. My door had ONE, which was barely adequate for the door when new. Dual torsion springs is far better, but builders cheap out with one. You will need duct tape to hold one edge of the insulation on some bays. Most doors have angles running vertically. When the insulation can tuck under the angle it is supported. In bays where the insulation butts against the back of the angle nothing is holding it but the two anchors per panel bay. That is not enough to hold the edge. I got white duct tape for appearance. Silver or other color would look bad. Now the door, even with insulation is easy to open and close. This also saves wear on the garage door opener (which I had to replace the drive bushing which was trashed). Total cost $56 for spring set, self installed, not too bad. Two insulation kits $150 (one new stock one old stock see below), $7 for white duct tape. Total investment about $217 and about 3-4 hours. Looks nice and will keep the heat down in garage that got afternoon sun. I now need to add some vent fan or AC in the wall (garage is fully insulated and dry walled). Old vs New Stock. Look at BOX the one with the big R-8, this is the newer version. The old version has Garage. I had two kits one old and one new stock. The older stock is at least 4 years from what Owning Corning told me. The pink insulation was slightly more compressed when unrolled, and it was faded (not bright pink). The color fade is not critical since you don't see it, there is white vinyl cover. However the insulation affects how effective the insulation is. Over time it should puff out to at least 2" to give you the insulation value of R-8. After unrolling I let them sit flat for a day. They all puffed up. In some cases the new stuff was still slightly compressed. The older insulation did fluff up, and was about the same thickness as new, may be slightly less on average. So if you want fresh insulation look for the R-8 white letters in RED box...

I see on Home Depot's website that there are several styles of this. I wish there were a review of this foam version vs other insulation types. Great for the video.

At first I wondered about having to change the springs, but after doing some checking it all depends on what size springs are already installed. If the builder used the smallest (read, cheapest) springs possible, then you might need to change them as you won't be able to get them much tighter.

I'm still not sure you would want this insulation if you live in a mostly warm/hot area of the country, as that's probably a losing battle. Just how are you going to cool it? Modern homes normally don't even have a window in the garage to mount an A/C, and then if you live in an HOA, you can be sure they will have something to say when they see an A/C hanging out the side of your house. (I actually have a neighbor who cut a hole in the garage wall and installed an A/C, but he also installed a very tall fence to hide it from street view so the HOA can't see it. I only saw it when the fence gate was open.) Of course, if you live in a mostly cold climate then you might want this, as it's no problem using a portable heater in a garage.

How do you insulate a sectional aluminum door that has ribs running horizontally across the middle of each section, rather than between the sections? This means there's no frame to hold insulation panels and there's the need to bevel each panel for clearance purposes when opening/closing it.

My garage door frame has pretty deep channels on/behind the stiles...and often on both sides of the empty panel. I don't see a technique to deal with this. If there is a channel on one side, it is not a problem to ghet material in there, but what do I do if there is a significant channel on both the left and right side of the panel? That will result in leaving one of the channels uninsulated.

$125 for 8 pieces of foam seems a bit high, also, try not to chowder up the corners when installing them, a little bend in the panel will stop that from happening.

This video is kinda lame. Should have shown the front and back of the panels up close and told people about the slits cut in the back. Also-every panel needs to be cut down from 48 inches. They didn't tell people how to measure. Just between the stiles or a little extra for a tight fit.? Ours is 46". And the music is sooo irritating.
