Ive never heard this before… so I won’t be switching around anything & just take your word for it… And quite frankly I’m not buying it…the spring I have now works just fine. So whatever it is you’re selling it’s a pass for me alright pal

This is an incorrect assumption. While typically a height of 91 inches or more is going to be a 15 inch radius, that is just a rule of them based on typical installations. But is possible that whoever installed the garage door still used a 12 inch or other radius. You need to verify the actual radius. The proper way to measure the actual radius is to use a square and measure the height of the curve from where it starts to curve on the vertical track to where the curve meets the horizontal track. This image shows what this looks like: www.garagedoorstuff.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/bracket_guide_updated_g.jpg.

I would like to switch from extension springs to torsion springs. How do I determine the size of torsion springs that I need? The door size 9’ wide x 8’ tall. The door is pretty heavy as it is a solid wood door.

Tom, you took the mystery out of replacing the torsion springs. I am 70 yrs old and live on SS, so any work I can do myself really helps out. I had a co-worker many years ago badly damage his arm when he attempted to replace the springs, so, I was hesitant about taking this job on. But with the correct tools and instruction, I am confident I can do the job myself. Thanks.

Will the garage door wobbles on the way up if the torsion springs are not the same size? Can they be adjusted or do they need to be the same exact sizes?

Hi, what happens when a garage door spring breaks? Does the garage door come crashing down? Thanks for answering. Best regards, Nancy

How do you insulate a sectional aluminum door that has ribs running horizontally across the middle of each section, rather than between the sections? This means there's no frame to hold insulation panels and there's the need to bevel each panel for clearance purposes when opening/closing it.

Great video and It looks fairly simple but its not .. I followed the instructions ( replacing and upgrading one broken spring with a matching pair for my 7’x8’ door) and two things happened; 1- once i was done (7’ door, 30 turns each), the door violently wanted to jump up , but i was able to stop it somehow and bring it down. So, i unwinded the 2 springs few times till the door was finally balanced, with good tension on both cables. Then to test it before engaging the motor, i tried to left it all way up with my hand, but for some reason, both cables jumped off the drums and the door got stuck in midway. Not sure what i am doing wrong. Help! Also, if i am doubling the springs (from 1 to 2) should not the number of torques on each spring get halved , or at least get reduced less than 30? Thanks 🙏

Yes you're right, 8 foot door has different measurement, as does any door height other than the 7 foot door he is giving the radius height for.

Assuming Thomas is about 6 feet, it looks like the door is a 7 footer. His rule of 91 or less indicates a 12 inch radius doesn't work for other door heights. I have an 8 foot door, and the rail is 99 inches from the floor. But it sure looks like a 12 inch radius track. If I subtract 12 from 99, which is 87, to adjust my situation to his door height example, then the rule works for me. This video is going to mess some people up if they just follow his instructions.
