I just did the same to my garage door. Hinges, sleeves and the nylon rollers. I also did new bottom seals and WOW what a difference.

If I could add, I noticed on the other door, your operator arm is standing straight up. It should have an angle to it, which would then give it a push at the top of the door to prevent airflow.

Now you just need to replace the top and bottom rollers. You dont want or have to remove the hinges to do that. This will eliminate the remaining noise in the door. I used the sleeves and rollers, just need to add the middle hinges to add tension to the middle of the door..

I have not seen anyone suggesting to also do the middle hinges.

Should I not Grease the new roller stems with white lithium grease? I dont have those plastic sleeves, but was reading to grease with that. Have the hinges and rollers ready to go.

There is 2 different types of Green Hinges - with Silver and Gold Springs. Silver springs are for residential doors under 12’ wide. Gold Springs are for commercial and residential doors 12’ wide and over. You put Silver on both doors 9’ and 16’
@GreggyGTV Жыл бұрын
I think the distinction is diver vs gold shafts/tubes in the models that were offered at the time of my purchase. I confirmed with the manufacturer at the time and he said I had commercial and they were fine to run in residential. Thank you for thinking to check on that and comment. I’m not sure how they are being offered right now.

Thank you, that may be true in some cases but the research I’ve done and the installers I’ve spoken to say that it’s mostly a fixed system and/or requires a lot of work to keep in alignment, etc. I believe that is something that should be left to the professionals.

What purpose do these hinges provide? These hinges seem like a gimmick and dont do what they are "promised" to do.
@GreggyGTV Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry but I'm confused by your question and your statement. How do you know that they do not do what they are "promised" to do if you don't know why they are used? Are you genuinely asking? Are you unsure of their use? For me, the issue was on windy days it would push my garage door in, leaving up to 3/4" of air gap on the sides. That caused cold air to rush into my garage and froze some pipes. These keep tension on the door, pushing them "out" more and causing resistance against the wind. An ingenious design really.
@JeremyStubblefield-d1y Жыл бұрын
@@GreggyGTV Well considering I have 18 years of experience in the door industry and have accreditation from from the International Door Association (IDA) which governs most of the big door companies across the world. These hinges are nothing more than a gimmick. The door has to be able to breathe due to the chance of straight line winds and should not be so snug to the door jamb that it wont move. There are multiple ways to adjust the door track to "snug it up" per se as well as replacing the vinyl weather seal on the exterior jamb. The bottom seal is another way to help with the seal as well. If your pipes froze due to it being too cold in the garage then you should insulate the exterior walls of your garage before trying a spring loaded hinge that has zero purpose. The rollers are also a trick as well, due to us Americans thinking more is better. The nylon roller that was replaced does have a tendency to go bad and squeak a fair amount but I have never seen one fail. The nylon bearing rollers will actually fail faster due to nobody actually lubricating the largest moving object on the house. If you or an actual door company doesn't come out to help do preventive maintenance on it then why bother?
@GreggyGTV Жыл бұрын
@@JeremyStubblefield-d1y I appreciate the time and effort you put into this response. I was confused by your initial question and comment. It seems that maybe your concerns are best addressed to the manufacturer directly? I apologize for not be more helpful to you or technical on your level. What I do know is my intention to help others. Maybe that is your intention as well? So in that way, I am sympathetic to your aim. I also certainly agree with you on basic maintenance and upkeep and recommend that people lubricant everything including the door springs every 6 months and chain tension adjustments if their door are chain driven. I’m just an average homeowner who wants to pass along info to others to help them get the most longevity out of things and to save money by learning how to do things for themselves.

After watching several videos that address the same issue as it applies to the Green Hinge as a fix and reading several posts here and on other channels, i happen to agree with USER-xy. It did seem like a way to "fix everything" at first issue but after listening and contemplating, it is my belief that adjusting the weatherstripping would be a far simpler (and cheaper) way to address the problems that lead to this video. Case in point: I was forced to purchase a new garage door recently and studied how certain things were done so as to avoid certain things that were of concern on the old door. While the new door is not exactly "quiet", a study of the hinges shows me that's not one of the weak links (of mine, anyway). The door not being silent is NOT from a gap forming against the weather stripping and therefor, would NOT be cured by the installation of the green hinge. Further, taking the plastic sleeve into consideration was another thing I was contemplating. Would that plastic sleeve not get worn SUPER QUICKLY and soon after begin to bind and cause further issues??? I'm good with adjusting the weather stripping and maintaining the lubrication levels as necessary, myself. Think of the money and time I'm saving by doing maintenance! Thoughtful presentation, though. Just not at all necessary if you ask me (and user-xy). Anybody else?
