Kevin, you are very slick when you are buying valuable items. The silver looks like it was used for everyday eating. Some people just have a mixture of interesting old stuff in their utensils drawer. I always buy extra items if I see something valuable, and ask them what they want for the lot. I try not to show too much interest n any one item, unless they obviously have no clue. The tennis bracelet is probably worth at least $1200 retail, probably more. The sterling silver knives have stainless steel blades because silver wouldn't cut meat very well. Usually, the handles are sold sterling silver, but not always.

Sterling knifes are heavy because the handles are filled with cement. Not much actual sterling weight. The money is in the spoons and forks... great find. A year ago I found a 5 pound bag of Gorham sterling spoons and forks for $5 at Goodwill.

You generally find Kevin that those handles are unlikely to be solid silver, what is normally the case is that they are resin filled to give weight or in the case of mid 19th century or older they’re often hard wood cores or a heavy base metal with a pressed Stirling silver casing on the outside! In this case with the blade being stainless and given that stainless is a mid 20th century product you’ll likely find they are resin centres to the handles so don’t get too excited about the estimated weight!!!! That said for $15 they’re a steal 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

In my experience the butter knives, even though sterling handles, are weighted on the inside and of course the blades are steel. So their silver value is not so much. Maybe 10 to 30% of the weight is silver. However, if the set is a desirable pattern, then there is value above the silver value. But of course the spoons and forks are solid sterling, so yeah. Great find!

Kevin, often the thick handles on sterling knives are hollow and weighted, in the same manner as any silver candlesticks, while the spoons and forks tend to be true silver weight.

Kevin, This is ‘my’ silver pattern: “Strasbourg” by Gorham... chosen when I married in 1966. I have a complete set of 6 place settings (salad fork, dinner fork, place knife, and teaspoon) w/ tablespoons, iced tea spoons, cream soup spoons, cocktail forks, individual butter knives, and assorted serving pieces and a carving set... Did you see that EBay raised the selling fees on April 1st? For managed payment people subscribing to a plan, the 11.5% changed to 11.7 % for most items. Books, DVDs and CDs went from 14.35% to 14.55%. Electronics and camera went from 8.5% to 8.7%. I never noticed any announcement of the higher fees, but they show up on the fee schedule and I noticed in my spreadsheet that with sales starting 4/1, my spreadsheet was a little lower than the fees being charged.

Just so everyone is clear about the hollow sterling silver handles on the knives (and other specialty pieces) by Gorham and other producers of sterling silver flatware - they are NOT filled w/ cement, plaster, or any other ersatz material that would be intended to give more weight to the handles. No reputable silver manufacturer does this. The knife blades are made of stainless steel, however, in order to give the blades enough strength to be useful.

Sterling is frequently marked with the word “Sterling” on flatware and jewelry (or may say “925,” in the case of jewelry) ... curiously, the hollow-handled knives are usually not marked at all. (Additionally, the blades are stamped “Stainless Steel”.) Contrary to the prevailing opinions offered here, hollow-handled knives are NOT filled with cement, plaster, or any other ersatz material. No reputable sterling silver flatware manufacturers use fillers of any kind in their hollow handled utensils. To me, sterling silver has a distinct smell, and I can identify it from that.

Gorham sterling hollow knife handles are just that: hollow! They are not ‘filled’ with anything other than air. The attached blade, however, is stainless steel.

Not to potentially burst your bubble but good quality Stainless steel is non magnetic, while low quality is magnetic. Most of that flatware is likely stainless and not silver.

It is sterling silver. It is branded and marked. Stainles steel is magnetic. Sterling is not.

@@CommonwealthPicker I didn’t see the mark, I just didn’t want you to potentially get a bad return. I really hope it is silver. But also I scrap metal, and most scrap yards do not accept magnetic stainless steel as proper stainless steel, and will pay shred metal prices for magnetic stainless steel because it is low grade. I want to be clear I’m cheering for you, love your videos, but good stainless is non magnetic, and commonly confused for silver, just don’t want you to get burned if I can help it.

@commonwealthpicker I hate to tell you this but it is a learning lesson. Sterling knife handles are not solid sterling, they are nearly always filled with plaster. Likewise the sterling candlesticks your friend bought are sterling except for the heavy bottom part, they are filled with plaster as well. It is extremely rare to find solid sterling knife handles or candlesticks/candelabras. I watch @bluebusdave and the guy he sells silver and gold to demonstrated on a video of how he bashes knife handles and candlesticks to get the plaster out to get a proper weight for the sterling.
