Awesome vid man! The way you compare each tire is really helpful! Currently running an Assegai 2.5 MT front with DHRII 2.4 MT rear on the 130 mm Calling. Always wanted to try out a lighter / better rolling combo, now I know what I want to try. Going to give the dissector & aggressor combo a go. Cheers!

Love a vid like this! Was rockin the previous snakeskin addix soft magic mary and hans dampf on my canyon neuron cf, they wore out and didn’t want the new heavy casings so went with maxxis dhr2 2.6 120tpi front and dissector 2.4 rear. Bought a rekon 2.4 now to play around with the set up. I’m from Norway, so conditions are mixed with hardpack, loam and rooty stuff.

It's such a bummer cause schwalbe has some sweet tires. But hopefully they will offer more aggressive tires in lighter weight casings in the future 🙏

As a serious tire enthusiast myself, I totally relate to your enthusiasm and journey with tires. We also have a very similar riding style from what I have discerned from your videos. I wanted to recommend to you to give a look at the Teravail Tires. They are surprisingly light in the larger sizes if you choose the Light & Supple casings and roll really well. I've been running the Honcho 2.6 up front and the Ehline 2.5 on the back. My terrain is quite different from yours, being on the far north coast of California. My typical ride would be loamy redwood forest, and a lot of loose over hard as it does not rain for half the year, tons of roots and some of them quite large and often whole sections of trail that roots are the primary obstacle. With lots of very steep climbs. Surprising amount of traction with the ehline 2.5 outback. It's not uncommon to grind up 1000+ feet and never get less than 10% grade and often up into the 20%+ range and the tire holds really well. I wouldn't hesitate to take them to the Sierra's and put them through the punishment of that extreme level of chunk and rock.

hey thanks for your advice! I'll definitely put them on my list, i've looked into them before, and the huncho 2.4 sparked my interest but just never could pull the trigger

Very cool video. I’ve been a connoisseur of maxxis tires, too. Started with dhf/dhr2. Tried ardent rear/ forekaster front for light weight. Also tried ass front/diss rear. I always come back to assegai 2.5 exo+ front/ aggressor DD 2.5 rear. That combo runs faster for me than even the ardent/forekaster, I think because it is burly and can soak up roots and rocks better. I never even worried abt the extra weight, even on 2k’ climbs. I am definitely curious about your rekon/dhr2 combo, might give that one a try. Thanks for the suggestions 🤙🏼

Love the extra traction I’ve noticed on the rear compared to the 2.5 exo dc aggressor I was using. I also like the maxterra assegai over the max grip dhf and now my front tire isn’t throwing sand up at my front end all ride 😂

Great tips for most people, definitely. I've ridden quite a few different tire combos in the last year, and the DHR/Dissector (F/R) and now the Continental Xynotal/E*13 Semi Slick Race (F/R) are my favorites. Everyone sleeps on SS imo, I have moderate loam and a lot of hardpack, and they are honestly the best rear tires for my enduro riding. They help massively with these big and long uphills and still work very well on the downhill sections, even if they get steep. They also work when its a bit damp and wet, but not central european winter rain wet. The Xynotal is definitely superior to the DHF and DHR in at least the dry, haven't gotten to testing it in the wet yet, as they have a nicely ramped profile with nice cornering and great transition knobbys. I'll definitely have to try it as a rear aswell, maybe in the winter, when I'll probably run something along the lines of the assegai or Contis new Argotal or Kryptotal in the front.

Great breakdown on all the models as I just started running Maxxis early 2020. The Rekon that came my new Niner I bought in 2020 seemed to have worn out rather quickly so not sure what's going to replace it. Riding in northern GA is varied conditions but no rocks like New England. I plan to save the video so I can refer back. Thanks for rundown!

Been waiting for this one! Appreciate the research and info that went into this. Still loving the Aggressor/Assegai combo. I'm riding pretty loose/dry and often technical chunky SoCal trails. One thing I have discovered lately is: DHF in the rear, for when I need more a rowdy/climby rear tire. It rolls and corners better and is more playful out back than the DHR II but is still grippy. It also doesn't do that rear Dissector thing where it's hard to lean the bike over- I really felt that with the Dissector. Dissector in the rear, couldn't get the bike to corner where I wanted it to. Rear DHF though allows you to really feel and lean your "dragon tail" following gracefully behind you, and is still pretty fast. Seems like I have no use for DHR II anymore - it's too draggy out back and up front would rather have the Assegai. So, for me I've settled at Aggressor + whatever is needed up front depending on the trail, and then DHF in the rear if I need more climbing or more enduro days. Up next on my plate is DHF rear and Dissector Front. Lastly, you were right in responding to one of my comments - Dissector in DH casing was overkill both in weight, and the MaxxGrip was like suction cups, just too much. I moved to an Exo+ for it and it's now great. Far journey from the Rekon/Rekon that my Scott Spark 950 came with, those were just too sketchy for me.Thanks again!

I have been debating whether to do rekon front and rear but I think I’m going to do dissector front and rekon rear. Great info on tire combos. I've been geeking out on Rekons 2.6 (855g) front and 2.25 MaxxSpeed (658g) on my Niner Jet 130/120 travel 26.8lbs overall. The rolling speed is ultra fast, but doesn't inspire confidence in turns. I just ordered the Dissector for the front 2.4 3C/EXO/TR (956g). In Georgia We do as much climbing as descending. I want to try the Dissector to get more traction and control in the front and I'm now curious about the Rekon (same MaxxSpeed 658g) vs. trying an Aggressor 2.3 EXO/TR (973g) in the rear. What do you think the major benefits /advantages to the Rekon MaxxSpeed version vs. the Aggressor. Is it minor or insiginificant between the 2 for the weight penalty or would the Aggressor in the rear inspire that much more confidence that I'll ride harder and faster despite the weight and speed differences. I would say the riding is mostly agressive XC here... lots of roots and rocks with many steep short and long climbing ascents. What about just Dissector front and rear? We also seem to have lots of rainy days throughout the entire year in GA, but can ride most of the year.

Just replaced the stock tires on my Epic Evo XC bike to DHF 2.3 front and Aggressor 2.3 rear (suggested by my local bike shop). Rode it 3 times for 2 hours each. I feel like I’m pulling a boat anchor. It is so sluggish coming out of the turns and a few of the climbs I had to walk the bike up. My times are greatly reduced and it’s hard to keep up with the other riders. I am so exhausted at the end of the ride and it’s not fun. I don’t want to go back to the Ground Control / Fast Trac combo (they’re fast but not enough grip) it seems the tires get a lot of punctures here in SoCal. I’m going to try the Rekon on the rear to see if it’ll make a difference.

Ya dude! I use the i9 enduro 305 rim at 30.5 mm internal. And maxxis actually no longer uses 120 tpi on their new updated exo+ casing. So all tires I use now are 60 tpi (exo and exo+). Double down is the only tire in their lineup still using 120 tpi … except maybe their super light XC tires. As far as WTB I liked the vigilante 2.5 high grip light. But it was far too heavy at over 1100 grams and the sidewalls are extremely thin. Thinner then a maxxis exo. So from that standpoint WTb is a no go for me.
