This is the sort of thing I’ve always wanted to do to see if it worked in theory. Garage54 does all the amazing stuff my mind conjures up. This shows high pressure port injection works. No need for complicated direct injection! Direct injection pressure, emissions cleanliness, and efficiency without expensive annoyingly complex fuel injectors that break. Pay attention car manufacturers, you guys over complicate everything! Garage 54 is on to something! Amazing work again.

mercedes did this in the 80s before they decided to go to common rail efi like the rest of the world, they already milked this idea for its worth. Sorry to ruin your idea, the germans had it a long time ago

It would be interesting to run it with a wideband sensor to see if it's going rich and lean at different RPMs and loads. I mean really it has to be if the injection pump throttle is not being changed.

Thats not a throttle as such. Its an enrichment device. It decides how much fuel you get per revolution so presuming the car needs a certain % of fuel at a given rpm and that doesn't change (it wouldn't on a petrol since stoic is always the same) then if its right at one rpm it will be right all the way up - or very, very close depending on how the thermal efficeincy changes based on air speed and volume.

I think it's all about the speed and timing. By getting the correct amount of fuel into the cylinder almost instantly after the compression stroke, the fuel has more time to mix with oxygen in the down stroke it creates a vacuum and force mixes the oxidizer and fuel even more thoroughly it's like a secondary atomizer similar to experiments when water boils at room temperature under a vacuum the gasoline is locked in place and evaporating.

@@SF-dy6hn The mixture control on the pump controls the cam timing which opens the valves to the injectors inside the pump. A longer opening angle on the cam means the injector will be open for longer, and more fuel per stroke, hence a richer mixture.

this was exactly how 80s mercedes fuel injection on their 6 and 8 cylinder usdm cars worked, they used a sort of "scale" as a throttlebody, mounted on the top of the pump. The farther down that plunger moved due to vaccum, the longer duration the mechanical injectors would spray. Very simple physics in hindsight, as our boy Vlad here showed us he got a hand for doing literally with his fingers!!!

Awesome! At diesel fuel pressures, (1800 to 2000 psi), the gas is instantly turned to a fog that mixes perfectly with all the air it can get. Put the electric turbo on it and hang on.

@@florin26balalau very true. I know the engine was used worldwide, but I'm not sure how easy they would be to come across outside of the North and South American continents. I honestly don't think these guys would even care to look for one. If I had the skill and abilities they use, as long as I had parts of an engine to start with, it wouldn't matter if it was just a box of random mixed parts, there would be a running engine at the end. 🙂

I just want you guys to know how much me has an American appreciate your channel. It is great fun to watch you guys make up some totally bizarre car ideas. As a regular American I have absolutely no issue with the Russian people. I have long collected Soviet watches, and Soviet space history. Yuri Gagarin was one of my boyhood heroes. But I must ask that you please talk to you government and ask them do not use any kind of nuclear weapons. This would end the planet for all of us. So if you'd be so kind would you please petition your government to not use the nuclear option. I don't know if you can do this safely. But if you can we need to solve this as a people. The US, Russia, China, India, Australia, and Europe must work together to save our planet. Especially so we can have fun stuff like your videos to be enjoyed by all. For a moment I thought they were doing a bad conversion to a diesel engine, but I was surprised, and I could see the expression of happiness on your face! Glad it turned out so well, I loved it! Now put the injectors instead of the spark plugs, diesel fuel, increase the compression and you will get a diesel Lada!

@@raven4k998 In my country that is something that was done very often a few years ago, for example in the 6-cylinder engines of the old mustangs (here they were from a national Falcon) increasing the compression and placing injectors (in the place where the spark plugs were) and diesel injection pump for trucks with low displacement engines and tuning it for the new engine.

So reversing the throttle setup to where the pump is adjust to your door pedal and your air intake is wide open will make that car extremely efficient.

I'm certain the atomization of the fuel from the port injection and diesel injectors is much better than a stock carbureted lada engine, letting the engine make more power and be more efficient

I think you'll find that running 2 stroke fuel also adds more power because you are increasing the available energy of the fuel.

Some ford escorts in the 80s toyed with mechanical pumps, they worked fairly well but was overly complicated by the time injection was needed for emission and started to faulter with emissions

Oil in the gas lubes the cylinders better. Oil also contains more chemical energy but is harder to burn. Add some oil to a stock vehicle, bet you'll notice similarities to this setup. And the high pressure injectors probably atomize the fuel better.

You need massive amounts of air for diesel fuel to properly combust. More air and fuel means higher revs and power

Turning on the heater obviously avoids the engine overheating when you run the engine on high revolutions for extended period of time...

Gas engines use throttle blades to regulate the amount of air going in to the engine thus regulate engine speed. Diesels use fuel flow to regulate engine speed so they do not need a throttle blade. Next interesting experiment i would do it so link the throttle blade and the pump so you are not constantly full fuel. That would give you a leaner burn(more power)/less fuel consumption/smoother running engine.

Well what most people don't understand about a diesel is that when those injectors fire it is literally on the power stroke or at least at the end of the compression stroke the beginning of the power stroke is when it feeds fuel to the cylinder not like on a gasoline engine where to fuel is fed in through the intake stroke on a diesel if fuel is fed into the engine at the end of the compression stroke in the beginning of the power stroke

If you used something like the vacuum advance or the like to adjust the injector pump to supply varying fuel amounts (E.G. lower fuel at idle, more at full throttle), you could improve the power across the rev range, making this lada an even more powerful lunatic car... :P

I think 1-3-4-2 is a very common firing order for a 4 cylinder. That's why it was the same.

You must still have enough fuel at high rpm, I am surprised that the governor didn't make it lean. As far as extra power goes - you have a big throttle body, more airflow than carburettor, try fitting your own separate throttle bodies?

Manual Air fuel mixture .. have to link them together and synchronize them .. throttle on the fuel no air it’s running rich , open air no fuel then running lean

Exellent work these are some of my ideas glad to see someone bringing it to reality, what you need to perfect it is a fuel pressure regulator on the return side to maintain the correct fuel pressure and atomization, as it is now too much fuel is returning to the tank , also the intake and throttle body is too big you are loosing torque , blessings to you all.

always wondered if this was possible. I've thought for years that a ford 4.9L inline 6 converted to diesel would be interesting. Maybe even a ford 4.6 or 5.4 could possibly just shave the heads and block to get compression necessary. a diesel v8 that revs like a mercedes om606 would be something...

weeeeeel if you would add a servo to adjust that diesel fuel pump, and have some wide band sensors and an ardunio to tune the system to a given lambda of 0.8-0.9, it would be quite some epic thing, i mean , you would make a shitload of power and make it run very efficient.

biggest issue for lada was recharging its own battery and timing chain guides falling and the chain beating holes in the side of the engine

I wonder how much of a power increase it gave. You should find a dyno to test it. Maybe install a stock induction setup temporarily for comparison.

Nothing new here. A company called GutBrod in Germany built the first fuel injected car using exactly the same style of bosch pump and thousands of Mercedes up to 1972 were sold with mechanical fuel injection,even Aston Martin sold a DBSV8 with mechanical injections. It's a great idea because the injection runs at 200PSi at the injectors.

There are a few newer gasoline-fueled diesel engines which actually run on gasoline, yet like its counterpart that runs off fuel oil, they tend to run pretty lean which hot air is just enough to combust the fuel during the power stroke cycle - the only difference between both diesel engines running different fuel is injection timing, due to the fact that gasoline is a little bit stubborn owing to the anti-knock agents added to it, so it has to be forced somehow, usually by pushing the main injection against the pilot injection timing so gasoline finally burns via compression ignition. The electronic diesel injection system on gasoline-fueled diesel engines aren't very much different from the original diesel engines, just there is an exception, and that's the software running on diesel engine computer which is programmed differently from the de facto diesel engine software. And as for port injection system, it's somewhat touchy as it has to have a little bit more fuel than the diesel injection pump can provide, and fuel injection is usually metered every time the injectors fires - you can get away with that just directly injecting the gasoline directly into the cylinders (via direct gasoline injection setup).

I'm pretty sure this dedign is a century old, there were lots of old tractors that ran on both gasoline and kerosene. You start with gasoline and turn on the spark plugs, once the engine is hot enough you can switch to kerosene and turn off the spark plugs.

You would need higher compression and direct injection, so that the piston not drawing in AF on the intake stroke. and so it has high enough compression to ignite the fuel with out spark plugs. Also the injector are open for a much shorter time on direct injection probably why you need to add 75% fuel

@@V8Lenny no it would be a modern gasoline engine New gasoline engines use this method, they call it GDi or PDi but instead of a mechanical fuel pump, it's controlled by the ECU.

Guys gasoline engine not like diesel need CORRECT amount of fuel and air. This is so called stoichiometric mixture. If there is to much of air or fuel engine will not produce full throttle and power. This is why it have throttle valve and computer callcullating how much fuel is need to burn properly. This is so called AFR (air fuel ratio).

Good job.But,high pressure pump uses diesel for lubrication also.Gasoline is to harsh and that pump will not last long.Anyway entertaining video.

This is cool. I was thinking 🤔 that if you run a cable from the throttle to the injection pump regulator control, it might be possible to regulate the enrichment of the fuel to correspond with the amount of air that goes into the engine, for mixture control.

Make a clear plastic intake for a GDI engine. How dirty does it get after being driven for several hundred miles, and do any of the intake spray cleaners actually clean the gunk off the intake? Always wondered that myself....
