Have a simple suggestion since I worked with hydraulics, even though was a electronics/electrical specilist for several decades. Simply install a variable displacement pump on the engine. With a wobble plate pump in the neutral position no oil flows, with maximum deflection of the wobble plate you have maximum flow. Many industrial and aguriculture systems use this method and it works fine. What you are having happen is basically hydraulic lock situation. The only way your system will work is WFO. With a variable displacement pump you would set the engine to a set speed and swivel the pump to change the hydraulic flow. We had one machine that used a fix displacement pump and a preportion valve system to vary the rotational speed, it was a continual pain in the ass while the wobble plate units ran trouble free.

@@pflaffik Sorry it is a common item for motion controls in many industrial applications. Can dig around in several industrial/agraculture junk yards around her and get them at a reasonable price. If you want it to work you have to spend money. Practically EVERY compact tractor employs this method for drive system and another pump for the other systems, often these pumps however have a compound arrangement where the variable displacement pump is for drive and the other is for systems.

If you put the pump directly on the engine, you should have had the drive motor connected to the input of the transmission. If you run the drive motor on the rear end, you should have the pump on the output of the transmission.

The control lever is basically working like a clutch. I would recommend hooking it up to a clutch pedal such that it engages with the pedal up and releases when the pedal is pressed down. that should make the coordination easier, as it would close to what you are use to. Also having the pump direct to the engine output would reduce losses.

Having had a boat with hydraulic drive I have some insight into what's possible. Now it was some years back, but I remember that the hydraulic pump and motor actually was the same models. Turns out they can work either way. Another thing was that the valve used had three circuits. In "neutral" is recirculated the oil from the hydraulic motor to the oil reservoir. In forward the oil circulated through from the pump to the motor and back to the oil reservoir. Finally in reverse it simply switched the input and the out put of the hydraulic motor. The valve had some overflow so it was possible to carefully moderate the prop speed without changing the throttle. Or you could brutally slam the hydraulics from full forward to full back and the boat would rattle and shake as the water churned into white froth behind the boat. This last was scary and put a lot of stress on the hull. It's something that's almost impossible to do with a mechanically coupled driveshaft, but the hydraulics was just so darned robust. The boats previous owner was a retired Navy Commander and he drove that boat as if it was one of his corvettes. Full forward and full back, nothing in between... I never used it anywhere near as hard, but it was good to know just what it was capable of if need be. What I'm getting at is that it shouldn't be that hard to hook it up so you have a reverse. Another thing is you need an oil cooler if you want to be able to drive it for any length of time. When the hydraulics heat up enough it will foam and you don't get anywhere. I also think you need to figure out the RPM of that pump. It really shouldn't be to high as that generates more friction in the hydraulics lines which heat up the oil even more. Get the RPM down somewhat and it shouldn't heat up to much. And then there's the speed of the hydraulic motor. If it's to high you either have to get some kind of gearbox in there, or perhaps you can do with a torque converter. That last might be a good option if you have one or can get one for cheap. When a hydraulic drive is used in a boat the prop and the sea acts as your torque converter...

What do you mean can't backup is inconvenient. When I bought a VW Bug in high school the transmission had lots of problems in Reverse so I tried not to use it. I remember out camping with my brother in one of his cars when we lost reverse from the automatic - Bang! no reverse. On a different Bang! no third gear so we drove ~200 miles in 2nd down I5 in California from Humboldt county to Silicon Valley area. Once driving a van in Santa Cruz the shift linkage broke so I was stuck in 3rd. Starting up on a hill in 3rd gear is interesting. I remember air powered power tools used to be very popular although more are battery electric now. What about four wheel drive are power? Stupid idea. In swampy area in USA people have Fan Boats with the engine driving a big FAN to push the boat because propeller gets tangled up and hits too much stuff. Driving around down you'd knock people over with the wind but when the chase you the wind would blow them away so you could escape.

There are adjustable flow pumps, for example an axial piston pump where the stroke is controlled by a swashplate. Those can be adjusted from zero-max. You could control the pump with the lever or gas pedal, while keeping the engine at some efficient RPM by other means, a governor for example. An interesing concept would be how to control this thing for maximum efficiency while having some decent final speed too.

Maybe put the pump in place of the transmission, but leave the clutch in. You start with the clutch depressed, so the hydraulic pump is not spinning. Then release the clutch to run the pump. A reversible hydraulic motor takes care of reverse. You just pull the lever the other way. You might be able to salvage one from a mini excavator machine-- the one that spins the whole cab would do; it's not high RPM, it's reversible, and it's got plenty of torque. Nice build, regardless.

Because of the nature of hydraulic pumps and the thermal properties of the oil you can only set a very limited speed range. Either you can do 0 to around 40kmh or 30-100kmh. Unless you ran the drive motor on the transmission and ran it like a regular car. Then it would be no different from a regular car except that it would run a hell of a lot hotter.

the problem is your valve block; its not meant to run stuff like this, its meant to run reversible cylinders. This means that in the transitional region (from off to forward, or off to rev) it creates a ton of extra restriction, but doesn't help "slip" the engine with relation to the wheels. When you fully open it then the restriction goes away but now you're fully in gear so again its hard on the engine. This is why this system only works when you rev it then slam it into forward, but struggles so much when you try to ease into it. its hard to say what the gear ratio is but it may or may not be correct. I think you would have better luck with a clutch between the engine and the pump, and then running the hydraulics from the pump to the motor without any valve.

The hydraulics are acting as a clutch. And the hydraulic pump is the gear. Only one gear in the hydraulic pump so top speed is what it is....basically you've made the simplest Frankenstein semi-automatic with the biggest hydraulic cushion. Great idea. Now connect it to an open cvt. One infinitely variable gear. Think go-kart belt clutch. No shifting

Use the bellhousing to mount the pump to the back of the engine/transmission. Pump➡️flow divider➡️double detent open center spool valve➡️hydraulic wheel motor. Just sayin'

Vlad this is pretty, but I would love to know how this setup would work to propel a boat. A few years ago I sat down and figured it out with 0-turn mower hydrostatic wheel motors believe it should work well from what I came up with. Would love to see it come together

Would be neat to set a Lada up as a skid steer with hydrastatic drive. Remove the steering wheel and lock all the tires. It would turn on a dime!

Hey you guys should have an adjustable throttle kinda like the excavator do to just set the throw how you want it instead of having to mash the gas like that

try running a gas generator to an electric motor to drive the car. like what locomotives do. :)

Would possibly having two drive Motors One left side and right side. without a differential. with the gear box driving the pump. Oil poring hope it was not hot.

just raise the default passive running speed, lift your pedal of the car engine, use it as a automatic pressure generator

Try building a motor cycle with that system too. But smaller set up.

Good use of scrap metal but I am not sure I would allow the builder of this to go anywhere near anything I owned including tying my shoelaces that has got to be the ugliest installation you guys have done yet bravo!! Garage 54 always raising the bar

If you want to expand this concept, do a full boom lift drivetrain swap. Torque hubs on each wheel, using a joystick to steer and drive.

Also just a recommendation, diesels are better for running hydraulics.

Dear people of garage 54, i got an idea for you. try the approach of modern scooters, bind the engine/gearbox directly to the rear axle and make it part of the suspension.

you should connect 5 differential together in a line and get a torque monster but move at .5 km / hr top speed
