Dean, I have a 3-year-old grandson who is your fan. You’re gonna like this. He can hardly say a full sentence without missing a word but he is crazy about garage band. He found it when messing with my iPhone while I was in a zoom meeting. Today, He asked to borrow my iPhone. I asked what for. He is not allowed. And, he said clearly that he wanted to watch Dean on you tube. I asked who Dean was and he said, clearly, Dear is garage band instructor. I gave him the phone. He found you in seconds. He watches your videos over and over and he likes you! I thought you would like to know how broad your audience is! Congratulations!

Hi, Dean. Fantastic tutorial! I'm a 70 year old guy who to this point has figured out how to record tracks but not how to clip ends, use auto drummer, align tracks, etc. Nor how to make a more professional demo/recording. Until now that is. Thanks for a bare bones, no nonsense/ no useless info tutorial. With tutorials like this one, motivated 'old dogs' can learn new tricks!! Jim out on the Canadian prairie.

@thesongwritingstudio5783
@thesongwritingstudio5783 4 жыл бұрын
@@emmanuel.n8458 Hey Lucky Starr! Hmm interesting... I might start by doing a test recording by setting things up just like you did before and hitting record but just don't sing or make any noise. The goal of the test recording would to see how much outside noise is making it into your recordings. So after you complete the recording then solo that track and play back just that recording to see if there's any extra noise making it into the recording. If you hear drums or other instruments or the metronome in your test recording then you may want to consider holding your each phones on tighter or simply using earbuds or something with less bleed or even muting out the tracks that you are hearing in the test recording when you record. Hope that all makes sense and feel free to reach back out it if not! -Dean

Thank you Dean..I just wanted to have some clafification on something you said regarding how effects work in conjunction with using the metrome..You mentioned that some of the digital instruments that Garageband offers are time-based which I totally understand. You also said however that effects may be as well...I just wanted to be certain that singer/songwriters like myself who often record our tracks as one performance and sometimes change dynamics and timing during such a performance can still use effects such as reverb or dynamics without having to worry about adversly affecting such effects when varying our timing during a performance. I believe the answer is a strong yes but just was hoping you could clarify that. Thanks again Dean!

Great videos - short, sweet and to the point. Way to add tons of value. Just a few quick questions. 1. If I apply affects before recording to a track can I remove the effects after or are they permanent? 2. Any limiter or compressor settings you recommend to get a nice fat rock mix? 3. Would love to send you a list of the gear I have for some suggestions how to get better sounds! Let me know if you are game!

Hey Ryan, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for sharing, that's encouraging... as for your questions... 1. yes, you can change them after recording! That is the beauty of digital recording... 2. Are you looking for compression settings for guitars, vocals, or just the whole mix in general? ... 3. Feel free to send it (here in this chat). I'll see if I can be of help, although my help would likely not be related to gear as much as it would concepts that apply to any guitar/vocal/etc recording. Hope that helps Ryan! -Dean

@@thesongwritingstudio5783 Thanks! For compression/limiting - to get the entire mix to be full. Here is my gear list. Trying to record, drums, piano, vocals and guitar. @thesongwritingstudio5783 4 жыл бұрын
@@ryanchristophernunes5005 Hey Ryan! As for the mix as a whole, you can hit "track" then "show master track" to bring up the master controls on the song and there is only one limiter and one compression that you have the option of using in GB. It is hard to say what settings would be best for your song but a good rule of thumb for any master ("mix buss") processing that you are doing is be very subtle about it, nothing too dramatic unless you are sure it helps as opposed to hurts. Then for live tracking the first thing you'll want to do is make sure that each signal source has it's own track so that you can individually process/edit them. To do this you'll need to enable multitrack recording which you can do by right clicking on any track header (the spot where the track name and icon are) and hit "show record enable button" at which point you can create a number of tracks and record multiple tracks at once. As for how to get the best sounds, my start would be to some test recording and make sure that the signal is coming in about halfway up the meter (the little blue wave form averages about half the height of the blue region) while making sure that you don't have any spikes that will clip (when it reaches the red/reaches the max height on the blue region and gets cut off/distorts). Beyond that, it would be hard for me to really suggest much! You know your gear and the sounds you like. Record with the best sound you can on the way in and it will of course make mixing that much cleaner and easier. Hope that helps Ryan! -Dean

@thesongwritingstudio5783
@thesongwritingstudio5783 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Calvin! If I am understanding you correctly is sounds like you are trying to pull up the visual mixer aka "smart controls" window in GB. You can do that by hitting "B" on your typing keyboard or by clicking the little dial looking button in the top left hand side of the GB screen. In the window you should see a drop down option that says "plug ins", click on that and it should show you all of the plug ins (effects) you are currently using and give you the option to adjust, add, or subtract plug ins. Hope that helps Calvin! -Dean

Awesome KZbin video and explained well. What about the people that just can't afford the latest and greatest computers and software.. I have a very well kept 17" MacBook pro 2007 Runs older 32 bit format and older version of GBand, 3.0... but it works !! Trying to get back into it with what I got.without spending a bundle to upgrade. Do you have a tutorial for older versions of GBand ?? You guys are great, thanks for what you share.

Hey Carol! I don't have a video on the older version of GarageBand but I will say that most of the features within GarageBand have remained the same, the biggest changes come in an updated look or in added (extra) sounds. The trick for you might be finding the features/tools shared in this video in your version of GB. They should all (or nearly all) be there, they just might have a different look or live in a different part of the screen. -Dean

Thanks. really great simple well paced education. I started with Ableton in 2007 and only used that for years. Getting back to recording again and got a new Mac so I finally want to learn/ use Garage band. as I am interested in how their pre sets and sample instruments sound. Years ago pro tools and Ableton had the best guitar amp pedals, but now many kinds of software exist and in a way it is more complicated. I want to spend more time playing and singing and less . Wearing the the computer audio engineer. hat deters from organic creation. I am hoping GB gives me the simplicity I need. I just need to figure out all the icons and tips. Thank you. subscribed

The reason you should use WAVE is for mastering and fine editing. It's pretty much like video editing: RAW is great for EDITING, but doesn't have a quality benefit to the viewer over compressed formats using modern codecs (and proper settings etc). The computer can use the data for greenscreening and other processing, but humans will never notice because we literally are unable to. Much like having frequencies in music that are over 18kHz or even 16kHz and below 20Hz is entirely pointless because we cannot physically do anything with it (the ceiling changes with age, babies hear 20kHz but they don't seem to care).- You can absolutely publish mp3, after all it's literally designed for that. Yes, it removes certain frequencies, adds curves and auditory masking (forgot the professionaly name for it: When very loud sound occurs, ignore quiet frequencies right after because ear can't notice them) in the track, but those parts are inaudible to humans anyway. That's what MP3 does, taking out the garbage you don't need in the file. When using proper configs for your mp3 encoding you can easily publish them and except for placebo effects it will be basically impossible for a human to distinguish the mp3 from the WAVE. TL; DR: WAVE is used for editing and mastering (think RAW in video editing) but has no tangible quality benefit over a well encoded mp3 (much like RAW video material) to human listeners. Only the PC will benefit from the additional data.
