When I recorded my band's upcoming album, we did all the instrumental work on Garageband - guitars, bass, drums, keys, even horns. I went into the studio to record vocals (I wanted a good mic and a great room), as well as mixing and mastering, which I don't really know how to do. When I got into the studio, the engineer listened to the sound of the instrumental parts, and was amazed it was GarageBand.

I couldnt agree more.....even the I Phone app is powerful enough to create great recordings. I have used Reaper on my laptop but went back to the app for touch screen editing. The only flaws come from my lack of experience. Too many times people buy into the belief that they can "buy quality". If you hit a wall, than sure, invest in equipment as a solution, but you have to be certain that the real problem isnt your lack of knowledge or talent. Copying my vocals to a guitar amp track allowed me to compress them with the guitar stomp box-not the most versatile compresser but still did the trick. Sometimes you gotta be creative -but thats the key word. No studio works with out creativity. A DAWS of any kind is only as good as the user. Thanks for the post!!

Good stuff. I used to have an extremely expensive, top of the line TDM Pro Tools system (192 kHz, with 96 inputs) with a plethora of plug-ins (Native Instruments, etc). I find that I was always pulling my hair out with that system, because something would ALWAYS come up that FORCED me into "Audio Engineer" mode while trying to be a Musician during the creative process. Very frustrating. I honestly was a bit of an "Audio Elitist", and used to poo-poo something as simple as GarageBand. Then I grew up, and realized what was important to me (creating music). GarageBand does practically EVERYTHING I need it to do. The only thing I do miss is bussing tracks and some of the mixing aspects of the "Auto-Drummer" and other instruments (have watched your "work arounds" for these things, but still am missing the ability to actually make groups without exporting audio, and then back in again). I may eventually upgrade to Logic for this reason, but have been using GarageBand for a long while now, and am very, very happy with the program. I will say there seem to be a few bugs I can't answers for, such as a plug-in compressor going blank (just a blue panel without knobs or switches), or the volume automation completely not working for a track (even though it is there, I can see it, but doesn't seem to work). But all things said, I am rather blown away by something so powerful that was also "free". Keep up the good work. I turn to your channel often as needed... and yes, I have subscribed! Thanks for your friendly, well thought out videos!

I applaud you for being brave enough to come out and say that Garage Band is all you need. I think it comes down to limiting yourself to just a certain set of tools, and making the best out of it - which, in turn, can make you a better producer. Why have so many choices when it gets in the way of making music?

4 Problems I have with Garageband: 1.) Can't record more than 8 live tracks at once. Just recording drums and bass fills those slots up pretty quickly. 2.) Can't flip the Phase on a track. 3.) You are limited to the number of processors and effects you can put on a single channel. Is it six, or down to four now? 4.) I have to set up the same stuff with every new song/project during a recording session. Why can't I save my own templates to speed up the recording process? I use Garageband everyday. I just wish it were even better. Logic inundates me with options, and for tracking Garageband is just simple and straightforward. I subscribed to your channel. Thanks for the cool content!

@@green323turbo Have you ever tried recording a band or orchestra with separate mic'ing on a drum set? You run out of inputs very quickly, and 8 is most certainly not enough. However, for a single musician/composer (as I am now) it's great, but not a good multitrack solution if you take it outside your living room.

Rediscovered Mac in 2009 (Had good experience with Macs years before at work). The 1st time I attempted to record on my Mac, it was fantastic. The software and the interface actually worked. I could actually get sound, my sound, my guitar to come out of the speakers. I am totally thrilled. Lewin, your videos rock! Keep doin whatcha do because it is wonderful!!!

GarageBand has improved soo much over the years. I remember opening it & pretty immediately found it’s limits. But with auv3 support (I’m on iPad) MPE capable, and the live loops section it’s actually becoming a powerhouse DAW. It still is not my main ‘go to’ - but now it’s because I never ‘learned it’ deeply rather than it being too basic. Gotta take my hat off to apple for what we see now, an adult GarageBand- still free, and evermore glorious

Hey I like Garage Band too simply because of it's ease of use. I think I've pretty much learned just about everything it can do so now there's minimal "head scratching"… Having to stop and figure out some technical issue, which really puts a damper on the creative work-flow. But there is one limitation that I've been coming up against… That being the ability to bus two or more tracks to a bus or aux track…. e.g.. Say you have two or more back-up vocals, or a bunch of drums separated on individual tracks, and want to add effects, or simply tweak the volume of the whole group at once. Is there any way to do that the latest version of G.B.?

Hello, I want to thank you for your insights. I have been in the business for 30 years - everything from 120 piece live orchestra in LA to working w artists in Nashville and here in Las Vegas where I live. Garageband has been a Godsend for me. First off because rather than hope that all of the charts works together when I'm in the big studio with lots of music and musicians - paying by the hour - I can use garageband as a practice studio ahead of time and don't have to pray that there aren't any collisions : ) Plus, I don't have to hold all of the pieces in my head until they are recorded - I've already been able to prescreen the arrangement. Keep up the great work and your casual yet professional info videos. Musically, George Dare

I completely agree with your post. I started using GB in 2008 and with the time I learned how to manage it by myself. Few years later I've upgraded to Logic Pro and after learned it, I returned to GB, because it's more simple, practical and I can't feel the difference at all in the results. I've to say that I learned a lot about GB watching your videos. You can watch my videos and see what could do using a cheap mic and GB.

I'm a TV director and Pro Tools is pretty much the norm and standard in TV land. When it came time for me to get a home recording DAW, I got a Digi 001 and never looked back. GB is great but, for me, it felt a little like going backwards. I really tried, recorded a whole song with it but I ended rerecording everything in Pro Tools. Last point, I use Reason for all my sequencing and I feel Reason is way more powerful and sounds better than GB in that area. Great channel, great videos, great guy!

I feel the same way about Garageband, it is a GREAT, POWERFUL DAW. It always annoys me how people act like Garageband is a toy. Garageband is powerful and can do way more than reel to reel and hard disk recording could ever do. Second off, Garageband was the originator of many features other DAWs use today. The fact that instrument sound banks are on a computer was because of Garageband. Back in the day, you had to have external sound modules or keyboard synthesizers to get your midi instruments. In addition, the fact that there is loops in a DAW is because of Garageband. Garageband was the first to have built in loops in the DAW. THe most annoying thing of all is when people act like you cannot make professional albums using Garageband. Garageband is a high quality DAW and it CAN make high quality albums.

Dude Thank you so much for this video. my friends are always busting my balls to go to a different DAW. However im always pulling hits out of garage band. like you said i am constantly surprised by how clear polished and pro my results come up. It makes me producer, recording engineer and in charge of final mixing so i get to do the sound i really want, no compromise. That's really important to making a unique sound. I totally agree too it just comes down to the song you play and if that sounds great well end of story. Same as you im in my thirties and have written songs and played many instruments and just want a nice studio no fuss to go record in. Still people say up grade to the "industry standard" your video makes that kinda talk myth. Thanks again. more proof of garage band greatness. All recorded in Garage band 5.1

Totally agree. Especially now that Logic is soooo much like Garage Band. There is absolutely nothing that I cannot do, that I need to do, in Garage Band. If you are recording everything yourself, especially, you can make professional sounding music with Garage Band. To me, I like 3rd party plugins so, those can get expensive (depending on how you obtain them). Also, loops are a big part of what I do, and if you want things to sound pro, you are probably going to have to obtain some really expensive loops. However, if you are willing to learn how to use the au plugins that come with GarageBand (because they are tons better than they used to be) you can eq and compress and add other effects to free or inexpensive loops and get good sounds. Like this guy was saying, how good the recording is, is completely dependent on you. Part of it is learning how to use the program (and it doesn't get any more basic than GB) and the other part is having a natural ear for mixing and mastering.

Thanks Lewin you said it all! Yes Apple are big, yes they have a crazy monopoly on some stuff, but it's for one reason they make stuff most people can use EASILY. I've tried so much stuff over the years, e.g. windows based mp3 versus iPod etc., so I'm not a young guy, but you have told it exactly like it is-all the great music orchestral/jazz/blues/soul/rock was made and recorded without computers. Music is about feelings and emotions and GB can capture any music from your soul.

It's great to see your kind of honesty regarding Garageband, which is generally seen by a lot of supposedly more "sophisticated" recording "experts" on KZbin as a real beginner's basic, inferior software. They all have Logic Pro and ProTools and all the other big names, with large collections of other expensive equipment that will supposedly make things better. But fundamentally, the most important thing is the music, and the old KISS formula (keep It Simple Stupid) works best.

I’m just about to graduate with a degree in Audio Production and Sound Design, meaning that I am now well versed in the top 10-15 DAW’s that are on the market currently. Before I started my degree program, I tinkered in GarageBand just because that’s all I had access to. Now after three years studying audio, I’ve now one back to GarageBand to see exactly what the true limitations there are versus other DAW’s. Especially after the 10.2 update the one thing that GB is lacking is a mix window with faders....that’s it!! If a musician has a good interface with multiple ports, the limitations are truly just the musician. I’m an engineer but I’m also a composer and since I can’t play an instrument well enough, the iOS GarageBand allows me to “play” the instruments I want. My favorite part is after I’ve payed down my blue prints for a song on my iPad, I can now Air Drop the session as a single WAV file or individual stems for a mixing session. As mentioned in this video, external AU’s can be brought in to a session. I’m loyal to Novation and every time I register one of their hardware products, it comes with a great selection of plugins that I can use

"...increased amount of possibilities...likely...kill your creativity"... so true. Any times spent saying "which mic should I use", or "which compressor should I use", or "what kind of cool thing can I do just because I can" is time taken away from actual tracking, performing, creating.... in my opinion anyway. I'm looking forward to giving Garageband a shot while I let Pro Tools, Studio One, and Logic have a little vacation.

Great video bro! The worst thing for Garageband though is the instruments. Most if not all their software instruments are very "cheap" sounding but I have found out that Garageband supports NI Massive! This synth plugin is what most top artists use as it is such a big powerful synth, artists use it to produce skrillex sounding dubstep to Flume sounding Chillwave! If ANY of you are having a bad time with those software instruments, you gotta try massive!! And ALWAYS use samples for drums!

Where LP X beats GarageBand is flex pitch (think Melodyne but built into LP X), comping (huge for choosing bits and pieces of vocal/guitar takes), busses, and of course a real mixer GUI. Everything else you can pretty much do in GB. And its free when you buy a Mac. And with new M1 Macs....never a better time to go for it.

My recording days started back in the 80's and I am still learning stuff. I remember razor blade edits. Try editing 2" 24 track tape. I don't miss those days. I was an engineer on Moody Blues Live at Red Rocks. Two Sony Digital Tape machines in the back of a panel truck. What a nightmare. I remember Sony PCM recorders and DAT. I don't use GB because I am a PC guy. Believe me I don't want to go back.

Thank You for the AU plugins reminder! I use Garageband and Adobe Audition CS 6 to record music. I just bought Garageband '11 and I'll be switch to that full time. Garageband is very powerful now and as you I love the final results. Sometime I don't like normalizing my tracks because it makes some results sound muted as any other audio software would do.

If you are referring to "radio" levels of volume, it just takes a lot of "mastering." Garageband has some great mastering tools build in, EQ, multiband compression and more to apply to your master tracks. Lewin is a fan of IK Multimedia and so am I. I have the TRacks Grand. It's a lot of money to shell out at once, but it is worth it. Try Sweetwater, you can get the standard and pace it over three payments.

My advice for anyone who reads this and doesn't know what DAW they should get is to: JUST PICK A DAW. MASTER IT. AND MOVE ON. You'll spend more time crafting and honing your skills making music and getting better as an engineer (Which is what really matters), and spend less time worrying about whether or not the DAW is stopping you from creating pro music. People who are dedicated to their craft make great music. Not DAW's. Good stuff Lewin! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! =D

For me, as still an amateur podcaster and audio engineer of my own music and someone who spent a number of years doing stuff in Garageband (more music than podcasting) who has since moved on to Logic Pro... I can't go back. Logic is so much cleaner and now that I'm used to it, easier to use and did I mention more stable? One of the big problems I had with Garageband, and to be fair my machine is a multi purpose one, not just for audio, was the stability. Running out of words. I like Logic Pro.

Thanks for the perspective! I just bought LogicPro X and have been watching instruction videos for several days and still haven't figured out how to do 2 very basic GarageBand functions (a) using the master track or (b) making lines in each track that allow me to make the volume, reverb, echo, etc. go up and down as the track moves forward. Despite people telling me that LogicPro is easy to use, I find it very difficult learning to transition from GarageBand to Logic

Interesting. You say garageband is 24 bit. Is it 24 bit also on iOS for the iPad? Or is it dependent on the interface you use with garageband?

Good point, if you can't get good recordings in Garageband don't upgrade to Logic because you need to work on your techniques and that won't change in Logic. I've used GB since it first came out and only upgraded when I needed to record more simultaneous tracks and started to play more keyboards and needed more midi flexibility. I still use GB, its great to start projects and to make simple recordings. You don't loose your work if you upgrade to Logic as Logic recognizes your GB songs.

The main reasons why I am tempted to upgrade to Logic is because 1) massive amounts of midi instruments (which is 70 percent of what I do, and I've definitely reached my limit in GB), 2) apparently Logic has a mastering element and function to sell the final product directly on iTunes(UPC's & ISRC's), and 3) they bumped the Logic price down to $200. If I am wrong in any of my assumptions, can someone correct me?

Hallo there my friend..You are awesome...You re giving so much help to a lot of people..!!Keep it up I have a question ...I recently installed the latest version of garageband on my new I Mac...But after the installation i found out that the new version does not have the ''magic garageband'' that the old version had which i liked A LOT... So..Is it possible that the old version is still on my I Mac...? Is it possible to use to separate versions on the same i mac..??? Thank you for your time..I ll appreciate your answer..!!

I couldn't agree with you more. Fact is, that far too many people believe they'll become greater musicians and producers by purchasing a lot of software (including myself). Actually I've come to realize that with an increased amount of possibilities you will be likely to kill your creativity. That's why garageband is a fantastic tool!!

I agree, GB is such a user-friendly, intuitive easy program to use, and can get the results. I've been growing out of it, needing a couple functions it doesn't have, so I've been using Reaper, too. But I still use GB. It doesn't have effects sends/receives option, and sometimes I don't have enough effects slots available on a given track.

Being an obsessive fan of all things Nintendo, I browse the web for game remixes. Then my brother showed me how he put MIDIs into Garageband to make covers of musicals, and I ran with it. I started remixing game music when I was twelve. They were just MIDI replaces back then, but boy, have I come a long way since then! I've even composed a few songs of my own. I love Garageband to bits, and whether you use Logic or not, GB is an excellent place to start! :D

Course it all boils down to everyone's individual role in music. I got a Macbook a few years ago with an old version of Garageband compared to nowadays and I basically learned how to record, mix and master with it. Now I'm on a new iMac with the latest version of Garageband and I love it even more what with all the new features. I've considered Logic Pro but for now at least I'm more than happy. Perhaps when the new Logic Pro is finally released I'll be able to come to a conclusion. :)

I've been struggling with Ableton. Garage Band is much more intuitive. I'm considering doing just what you describe: wait until GB limits what I need to do before moving on to a more complex DAW.

Someone also made the point that GB is for composers, and Logic etc for mixers/masterers. You really can't beat the the ability to touch an ipad screen and have something looping within minutes, wherever you happen to be when the Muse arrives. Can't do that with a workstation.

You need to record to a click track! start with a rhythm guitar and vocal part. Then build up around that. Another guitar part, another vocal. Then delete the original track and build up around the 2 tracks you now have.

You're spot on for points one and three but there's definitely no magical mastering tool for iTunes and you definitely can't get a UPC for it through Logic or anything. I don't know where that idea popped up from. There's a ton of great tools for mastering, but it's an art all on its own. You really need to know how to use them and have tons of practice mastering as well. It takes a lot of time and work.

I am keeping Garageband 11 because it still supports hundreds of 32 bit au plugins that I use as instruments and effects (namely M-tron and Ampeg SVX). I will be using Logic Pro X for it's drum capabilities more than anything. I am a lone recording musician/recording engineer and doing the drums is the most cumbersome part for me. I don't like EZ drummer or superior drummer as I find them non intuitive. Too bad Logic Pro X does not support 32 bit plugins or have an integrated au plugin manager like the in Logic 9. Even FL studios and Reaper have their own integrated wraparounds/bridges. Guess you can't have your cake and eat it too, need to use different programs for different reasons! If anyone has any suggestions (such as drum plugins/programs) or (rewiring different programs) give me a shout. I want to be able to use my 32 bit plugins in a 64 bit program with good drum capabilities. Logic Pro X would have been perfect but they ruined it for me with not supporting 32 bit. Thanks in advance!

Hey man. Here are a few things I was wondering...maybe I just haven't looked enough. And keep in mind that I'm still on the old Garageband and hesitant about moving to the new version. Will the new version be able to open audio projects that were created in my current version of Garageband? So here's the main thing I'm wondering: Is there a handy crossfade function in Garageband? thanks for your help!

I've been watching your videos for quite a while. Always interesting stuff. I've been using Pro Tools since 1999, and since then have also worked a lot in Logic and Studio One. I've always sort of overlooked Garageband and wrote it off as a toy. But your video has led me to give myself a "Do it in Garageband" challenge. I'm going to do my next track in Garageband and see how it goes.

Wow haha I remember watching this video back in 2013. Well the reason I upgraded from GarageBand to Logic back in the day was that GB still didn’t had the major upgrade until late 2014 so in Logic there were higher quality virtual instruments like the Drum Kit and the Hammond B3 Organ.

L your awesome man. I have a fostex 4 track too and I thought I was the only one.I filled 4 boxes of tapes. I still protect it with my life. lol. I started on my dads reel to reel in the beginning. I've been recording and have learned a lot about the process. I was playing live and writing and used the old garageband a bit and recorded 6 of my ideas in a week. I didnt know what to do from there so I left them alone in their raw form. Didn't really get all the mastering stuff but I loved mixing. That was 2008. I was blown away cause it was a huge step for me in recording. 2013 I bought the zoom r8 and It surprised me in some areas. I can use it as an interface with the new mac as well. Might get another interface down the road. Well I'm 36 now and I get it! i'm ready to buy my first mac and you have helped me decide why gb 10 is enough. I was thinking I needed logic asap but thanks to you I know where to begin.. I enjoy figuring out my own drum beats but the drummer feature still blows me away. I have songs on the four track that I could master and thats exciting. I want to get tracks off the r8 and master them in gb. Anyway thanks dude and you r the coolest. keep up the awesome info. RR
