In my experience leveling my tall fescue lawn last Fall, instead of using a leveler or a landscape rake to knock down and spread the piles of soil/sand I just used my push broom, only I turned it upside down. The broom is not as wide as a leveler or landscape rake but works fine for leveling the size of depressions you were dealing with. Then I turned the broom back over and worked the soil/sand in down lower as you did.

Best vid for cool season lawn on the internet wish i would have watched this before i did my backyard I used play sand / moisture control miracle gro. few things, didn't realize how much material i needed just for a few spots. my landscape rake kinda tore my lawn up a bit when pushing, and i brushed but i didn't brush enough to see the existing grass so the spots are still bare after three weeks. i never had success seeding in the spring in ontario canada, late summer early fall no issues. so anyway mixed seed in with more miracle gro (i usually use black loom or composted manure for seeding) i kept it in the garage for a coupe days mixed in my cart I feel like it gets nice and warm first then i put it on top of the sand then hit it with a bit of cheap Scott's starter fertilizer (i use a high quality triple 16 4 times a year) but for seed i use scotts starter not even sure i need it tough in the fall i don't use any. anyway i didnt use peat moss but i think next time i do this project or general seeding i will try it out. i didn't do my front yard as this was my first test run. just bought this house a few years ago, i respect the comment you made re your back. i destroyed my back removing trees and removing grass by hand with shovel about 1500 sq ft worth then lugging all the old grass in my car to the dumb- i legit patched certain sections of my lawn and it will take me years to finish removing old sod and finish patching. Having a lawn that's not level sucks cause of the water drainage but i also don't have money to hire someone to do a full tear out and level. my back will be so messed in a few years but my lawn will be amazing. really hope my second attempt at the levelling some spots works i think i might have to wait for the fall though when the soil is still warm for the seed, unless i don't seed and just do an amazing job at brushing, not even sure you need to seed when there is already grass there. love all your vids.

Great vid! I also have longer grass - usually cut 3 1/2 inches - there is NO WAY I can take it down to only half inch, which is what most other YTubers recommend for leveling. Based on your video, it appears longer grass is ok, but it will take more work to spread it. That's ok. I recommend ditching the wheel barrow and buying a gorilla cart. Much easier on the back!

JB - I did the lawn last year removing the bent grass and I see I have a few bare spots this year. Do you recommend using the soil/sand mixture along with the seed? Or just seed and then fill in the low spots next year are later this year? Also, living in Buffalo when did you do the leveling job in the spring?
@GarageGear Жыл бұрын
Hey Mike! Now is the time to level the lawn. Spring time in Buffalo is best. Level the low spots with a sand soil mix. Put some seed on top. Put some peat moss over it and let it grow! In about two weeks you’ll be good as new! Thanks for being a cool local fan!

I thought the same thing about the leveling rake when spot leveling. I think it works a lot better and easier on larger areas where it's primarily dirt, OR if the turf is super low. Just a correction: I don't believe it's accurate to say topsoil is organic and will go away. Top soil has only about 5% organic matter (the rest being clay, sand, silt, etc). Basically, if you compact and add in layers, you can perform successful leveling with topsoil only.

@@erikbrouillard9759 clearing out the plugs and filling them with sand will be a lot more work. I noticed you cut your lawn without the bag, then with it. Did you do two passes??
@GarageGear2 жыл бұрын
Yes I did a clean up pass because there were so many clippings from cutting low. Thanks for watching Jonathan! 👍

I was just told on a different channel that if you have tall fescue the only way to level is by full renovation 🤦♂️

This would have worked better if you cut your grass shorter

Perhaps! But my mower was bottoming out in spots. Some things you just have to deal with. Thanks for watching

Wow that a lot of work. I just did mine with all mason sand worked out great and did 10k sq ft in 4-6 hrs.

Sure is! Definitely not something you do all the time! Lol! Thanks for watching tacome!

Good video. Another advise I found here and there is to mix the seeds with your dress-sand/soil beforehand. Do you agree ?
@GarageGear Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you could do that. Thanks for watching!

Do you have any good tips for if you back yard gets to wet after rain and takes for ever to dry
@GarageGear2 жыл бұрын
If water is sitting there for a while you may want to consider a drain tile in your yard. Installing these can be a lot of work but your yard will be significantly drier! Do you have a large area that stays wet?

Why wouldn't you cut your grass way shorter instead of ending up with blotchy areas?
@GarageGear7 ай бұрын
If I went any lower the mower would bottom out in spots. Mow as low as you can comfortably go with it
@PatriotBrad7 ай бұрын
@@GarageGear I didnt realize there was that many dips. Grass looks like 2" long! The first time i tried to level it looked like that and i just killed off holes of grass versus spreading it out more.

@@PatriotBrad it’s mostly along the edges I would be bottoming out. Don’t want to scalp it

Hey Nick! Can’t dump it in the street. Town won’t allow it.
