In my experience leveling my tall fescue lawn last Fall, instead of using a leveler or a landscape rake to knock down and spread the piles of soil/sand I just used my push broom, only I turned it upside down. The broom is not as wide as a leveler or landscape rake but works fine for leveling the size of depressions you were dealing with. Then I turned the broom back over and worked the soil/sand in down lower as you did.

1 The push broom is a good tip, I haven't seen that before 2) Thanks for contrasting the leveling and landscape rakes Finally, I appreseate your frankness about the time and effort this takes. As others have noted I too am working on a neglected lawn, although in my case it was me. I'm recently retired and improving/maintaining the lawn I put in 30 years ago now makes sense :) Thanks for another great "How to Video" on #lawncare.

Hey Loren! Thanks for the positive feedback! I appreciate it! I liked the landscape rake a bit better for my turf. Better spread! I like to be as honest as possible with my videos that way people know what they are getting into. Fall is coming and that is usually the best time to get a neglected lawn in shape. Pretty tough in the summer. Rent an aerator in the fall and you’ll see some major changes! Thanks for being a cool fan Loren!

Great vid! I also have longer grass - usually cut 3 1/2 inches - there is NO WAY I can take it down to only half inch, which is what most other YTubers recommend for leveling. Based on your video, it appears longer grass is ok, but it will take more work to spread it. That's ok. I recommend ditching the wheel barrow and buying a gorilla cart. Much easier on the back!

Hey Dan! Yeah there was no way I could get it down to one half inch. Probably would have killed it or my mower! I got it down to 1.5 or 2 inches and that was fine. 👍

First time home owner. I'm ready to do this. If I did this in the fall do I have worry about snow melting it away? If I start in the fall should I start late August? When should I start moving again And? And then in spring do I detach? Or leave it alone? Or should I do this all in early spring? Thank you for your help if you respond im going to subscribe

Hey deep lots of good questions here! Don’t worry snow won’t affect this at all. I would start this in the first week of September. Give the lawn about two weeks to do it’s thing then start mowing again. Only dethatch if you have a thatch problem. Spring will be probably the best time to do this because the lawn is growing so vigorously. Thanks for watching

Best vid for cool season lawn on the internet wish i would have watched this before i did my backyard I used play sand / moisture control miracle gro. few things, didn't realize how much material i needed just for a few spots. my landscape rake kinda tore my lawn up a bit when pushing, and i brushed but i didn't brush enough to see the existing grass so the spots are still bare after three weeks. i never had success seeding in the spring in ontario canada, late summer early fall no issues. so anyway mixed seed in with more miracle gro (i usually use black loom or composted manure for seeding) i kept it in the garage for a coupe days mixed in my cart I feel like it gets nice and warm first then i put it on top of the sand then hit it with a bit of cheap Scott's starter fertilizer (i use a high quality triple 16 4 times a year) but for seed i use scotts starter not even sure i need it tough in the fall i don't use any. anyway i didnt use peat moss but i think next time i do this project or general seeding i will try it out. i didn't do my front yard as this was my first test run. just bought this house a few years ago, i respect the comment you made re your back. i destroyed my back removing trees and removing grass by hand with shovel about 1500 sq ft worth then lugging all the old grass in my car to the dumb- i legit patched certain sections of my lawn and it will take me years to finish removing old sod and finish patching. Having a lawn that's not level sucks cause of the water drainage but i also don't have money to hire someone to do a full tear out and level. my back will be so messed in a few years but my lawn will be amazing. really hope my second attempt at the levelling some spots works i think i might have to wait for the fall though when the soil is still warm for the seed, unless i don't seed and just do an amazing job at brushing, not even sure you need to seed when there is already grass there. love all your vids.

JB - I did the lawn last year removing the bent grass and I see I have a few bare spots this year. Do you recommend using the soil/sand mixture along with the seed? Or just seed and then fill in the low spots next year are later this year? Also, living in Buffalo when did you do the leveling job in the spring?
@GarageGear

Hey Mike! Now is the time to level the lawn. Spring time in Buffalo is best. Level the low spots with a sand soil mix. Put some seed on top. Put some peat moss over it and let it grow! In about two weeks you’ll be good as new! Thanks for being a cool local fan!

@@GarageGear will do. Thanks a lot! Along with leveling, I also plan to aerate and over-seed. Should I clear out and fill the”plugs” with sand first and then use sand/screened loam to fill ruts? I typically let the plugs just decompose on the lawn.
@GarageGear

@@erikbrouillard9759 clearing out the plugs and filling them with sand will be a lot more work. Just a correction: I don't believe it's accurate to say topsoil is organic and will go away. Top soil has only about 5% organic matter (the rest being clay, sand, silt, etc). Basically, if you compact and add in layers, you can perform successful leveling with topsoil only.

JB how did the leveling end up a year later? I tried using sand mix in the past (25% sand/75% soil) but it became really spotty for future growth of cool season grass.

All good here! Every lawn is different! There could be a million factors affecting your lawn and it’s level. Leveling is usually not just a one and done process. Typically you’ll do it over a few seasons.

Great info! Glad you talked about the amount of effort required. I have a bad back (lumbar fusion already) and I was looking to do this but now I think I'll enlist the help of my adult children before tackling this project! 1 quick question: Do you talk like that all the time or is that your "camera voice?" 😁

Great video JB. I did a combination leveling/overseeding project last fall to my front yard and it turned out great....By chance I used the same exact grass seed that you used and really liked the results. I'm planning to do the same thing to my backyard this fall but with a heavy emphasis on ground leveling.

Hey ROBERT!!! Great minds think alike huh? That seed is extremely reliable! How big is your backyard. I ordered two yards and had way more than I needed with the soil!

@@GarageGear I don't know the exact size of my backyard, however, I do know that when I ferttilize it that a bag of fetilizer that sipposed to treat up to 5 thousand square feet is not quite enough to cover it. My front yard is definitely smaller.

@@robertkreachbaum4546 ok cool! For me one yard basically covered about that for my front yard and I spread the rest all around the yard. You’ll definitely have extra if your doing a thin glaze like I did!

I thought the same thing about the leveling rake when spot leveling. I think it works a lot better and easier on larger areas where it's primarily dirt, OR if the turf is super low. Incidentally, I used 2 bags of top soil to 1 bag of sand, whatever sizes those were at home depot... Worked pretty well.
