Lexus IS250 Hood Latch not working, replace it

If you have a Lexus IS250 with a hood latch problem, this video shows you how to replace a Lexus IS250 hood latch, this car is a 2010 model so its a 2nd generation Lexus IS 250. Lexus part number # 53510-53061. The two front bolts for the hood latch are special in that they have a taper to centre the hood latch. The hood latch has an electronic sensor that will trigger the alarm when the hood is opened and the instrument cluster will also indicate when the hood is open. The second generation ran from model year 2006 to model year 2013. If you have a Lexus IS250 between these years the replacement of the hood latch should be very similar.

Just fixed my snapped hood latch spring with a Steel line looping around the spring to the outer shell of the lock, this created tension within the spring and locked when put back together. Didn’t have much hope at first but was worth a try before buying a replacement

Oh boy that I would not know. They would be metric threads, maybe 8X1.25mm if I had to guess but please don't quote me.

Is there any adjustment to move the latch up and down? Mine only works when you slam it, i recently adjusted my hood alignment with the rubber adjustment screws. It’s been a little worse since because I’ve had to raise the hood slightly on both sides, if that makes sense. And so I’m wondering if I can move the latch upwards so that it has better engagement. If not I might slot out the holes in the big metal support so that I can adjust it, any ideas?

I don't think you can adjust the latch height, for most cars you can't. The reason is the latch would keep coming out of position with the pressure of the hood pushing and pulling on it. Normally its the hood that gets adjusted. BUT the faulty spring on the latch can make it harder to close the hood. I had to slam my hood, but once I replaced the latch I don't have to slam it anymore. I think it was the rusted spring in the latch.

Hey there, sure thing !!! You need a set of flat tipped pliers - to remove the plastic wiring harness amzn.to/3PIBSQF and you need a small pick amzn.to/3a2Kgdh and you need a 10mm socket with a ratchet, and you need a trim removal tool. I found this one and now use it all the time, it really is the best thing I have found, and Snap On tools sell it under their Blue Point brand amzn.to/3CPg8dX You don't have to buy these tools, but the links just give you an idea of what to buy.

No new bolts supplied. If the bolts are rusty you can just take them to a wire wheel and put a little dab on anti seize on them.

I think that would be your centre rad support, if you need to order one of those big pieces your going to have to describe it to the order person so they get it right. I don't know why you would need that unless the car was in an accident. Hopefully I thinking of the right piece you are referring to.

Oh boy, well I know that to open the hood I had to bang on the hood a bit while my phone and friend was pulling on the hood latch from the inside. I wonder if your cable is stretched or damaged?

Did you make sure the electrical connector is clipped on? If it is then see if the problem is in the wiring circuit. You can take the electrical wiring harness and ground it to see if the light goes off.

It started with me clamming the hood and it worked, then it didn't work. I think that was a sign it was on the way out.

IF you have a GS350 this job is much easier. I did it today. I expected to have to remove the big metal piece he did (under the plastics) but NO. Mine was right there- fully accessible without the need to remove much more then 3 bolts and the cable. My spring was also broken. Paid $65 for the part- delivered in a day from dealer. Question: Mine was not locking. If I replaced the two springs would that have fixed it AND are the springs even available? No regets just putting in a new one but a spring or two would have been much cheaper.

Hey there and thanks for the comment, Sounds like the IS250 is more difficult than the GS350. To answer your question about the springs I think if you replaced them it would probably lock. I think I showed how the springs were shot in this video. As far as I know you can't buy the springs by themselves. You have to get the whole assembly.

@@GarageKing Thanks. Springs are available- around $3 and $5 bucks. I called Lexus today. Might rebuild my old one and sell it as used. Yes, 100%, on the GS350 3 bolts and some plastics and you are done. Quick 15 minute fix. I was not looking forward to removing the metal thing- no need.

just watched your video im up here in south westren ontario and i have an 09 is250 and recently just stared driving my lexus more as i have a daily and this is my more pleasure car anyways my hood latch is perfectly fine but im getting the sensor issue saying hood latch open~ even tho its not its done this before and it randomly went away after a few bumps but now i just replaced my battery and this popped back on im wondering if i take this appart and clean it and re grease and what not it will fix it?

Hey Wade thanks for reaching out. I'm in South Western Ontario as well (GTA). The latch actually comes out pretty easy so if I were you I would take it out and clean it up, and see if that helps. That was my plan, but when I took mine out it was just too rotted out, so I had to replace it. I would try that as you never know. Take it out and spray it with brake clean to clean it all out, and then spray it with some lubricant. Can't hurt, and if that doesn't work then I guess its a new latch, not the end of the world. I bought this car as a project car, and I have done quite a bit, I still have to edit then I can upload the vids, but I did the exhaust, mirrors, and brakes. There is a vid on my channel about exhaust tape, and it worked on this car for about 1.5 years so pretty good !!! I then bought the car off my neighbour. How are your mirrors, the mirrors on these cars in Ontario always corrode due to the salt from the road getting into them. Then it looks like you have strips coming down the side. I did a vid when I first bought this car and showed it all. Sorry for ramblin, but yes I would take that latch off, clean it up and see if it works. I always believe repair is better than replace if it can be done. Happy Sat to you :)

@@GarageKing Right on man, im 30 mins north of London ( grand bend ) area! but yesterday i did all these steps to get at the latch and the video is straight forward and helped me get at what i needed to work on so thank you for that.. that being said i snapped my two top bolts in the left/right corner after i left soaking with releasing agents / heated with a torch they still snapped... but i at least could get all the other mounting hardware out with out any troubles ( accept one of those four bolts fell in behind the light somewhere still trying to track it! I'm not so worried for the bolt, as I'm more worried where it ended up!.. iv already re drilled the studs out for the two i snapped and will be tapping and re threading them today and well i suppose by 3 bolts unless i find the one to put back in there... i also got those clips from the wiring out no problem with only one breaking as i think the owner previously already had damaged... other then that the removal went really well and pretty fast for my first time.. i managed to get the latch out and soaked really well with cleaners and wd40 as that's all i had on hand at the time and today i will be getting a new can of brake cleaner as mine was empty and will clean the heck out of it as well as blow out really well with a air compressor... then re lube and connect er all back up I'm hoping it fixes the sensor issue if not i will leave the connector unplugged until the latch actually breaks and i will replace it then! - def looking forward to your other videos as they come, I've had no other issues with my Lexus besides this latch error.... accept yeah the mirrors I notice fill and or are corroded inside and when it rains they drip and you can see like water stain down the side of the car same with the actual door handles, they do the same they like run when it rains and then leave water stains... my passenger mirror was semi broke when i got my car but very hard to notice unless sitting in the car.. i wanted to replace it but with a 300$ tag on a new one i was like ya f**** that, its more a cosmetic thing then anything so iv left it as well until i actually need to replace my mirror.... I'm looking at re powder coating my rims since they are oem and look awesome just curb rash from the previous owner and some scuffs, that a fresh powder coat will clean up and make look like brand new just debating on the colour atm!!! other than that I've been looking into replace my foot peddle covers as I'm missing one on the clutch and I'm thinking of getting a OIL catch can ordered... ill toss some photos up of my car sometime... i wanted to do a youtube channel for my Lexus and all the shit I've done or worked on , like i re did the sound system added a aftermarket amp/subs did video's on it but haven't edited crap or even started trying to put my channel together haha... @@LilWade42069 Thanks for the reply, you are definitely not a beginner if you are using the torch to heat bolts to get them out, and are comfortable re-threading holes. I'm familiar with that type of work haha!! Those mirrors are expensive I know. You can get them on Amazon, but there are mixed reviews of the quality, and sometimes the connector does not fit so I just bit the bullet and got them from lexus. I thought that with the channel, I better use good ones anyway so I know there wouldn't be any issue with the installation (and there was not, they went well) If you want to start/or thinking of starting youtube channel I think that's a great idea, but it is a lot of work. The filming and editing are pretty time consuming. Then there is the thumbnail to create and all the tagging. There is a lot of behind the scenes stuff for sure. If you ever start one let me know and I'll do my best to help you out. As far as a photo for the hardware I don't have one. All I have is the raw video footage before editing, and the only photos I take during filming are for possible thumbnails. There are really only 3 main types of bolts. The ones that hold the latch have a head that is not flat (under the head its domed so it can centre the latch) then the 4 side bolts that hold the metal brace on are all the same, they are just regular machine threaded bolts. Then the bolts that go into the plastic. They have what looks like wood screw threads. Lastly, you have the weird looking nut for the latch that the plastic clip goes inside. Also if you are thinking of a catch can, I have about 4 or 5 catch can vids on my channel, and have quite a bit of experience with them. A catch can on the lexus is not a bad adea as that engine is known to carbon up. You must have upgraded to a pretty good sound system, as the factory system is actually pretty good. I gotta give you thumbs up, as you job was not straight forward with the snapped and dropped (LOL :) bolts !!!! I'm going camping next week so I don't have time to edit the Lexus Mirror replacement (I wanted that one out next week) so I was changing oil on the Vanagon for camping so I'll just edit that one as it will be quick. Its probably going to be to basic for you, but don't worry the lexus ones will be coming :) Take care and if you need anything don't hesitate to reach out.

Anyways re threading holes isn't terribly hard although I've only done it a a hand full of times.. it also depends on where the area is your trying to work on! About the mirrors i did see them on few sites like amazon / eBay but i also was going to go with Lexus them selves just to save the headache of trying to get a perfect OEM aftermarket replacement... especially for you with your channel get the right parts and quality ones. " do it once, do it right " Yeah i can only imagine all the hard work and time that goes into content creating as to why i haven't even started a channel as I'm not great with editing nor do i even have a program or know where to start with my footage as kind of why i gave up~ i wanted to vlog my projects but yeah i also recently started streaming my game play for another hobby of mine but that's not going as planned either slowly growing though haha! never give up right! but as for my audio i should of explained it better i left all the stock sound system just ran my own after market AMP/ SUB setup currently building a custom sub box for the Lexus trunk but that was put on hold for a bit as I'm waiting to use buddies wood working shop... i completely removed all the back seats and paneling from front to back to run my wiring all sleek and proper with soldering all the wires and shrink wrap did it right took a good chunk of couple weeks to do but it looks and sounds amazing! and def was a fun project that i did videos and pictures of just never did anything with the content.. anyways as for my hood latch project, i haven't completed it with the weather we've been having, i have the holes re threaded and everything cleaned and re greased just needing to put it all back together which is hopefully my project over the weekend but ofc woke up to rain again this morning... the latch btw was so gummed up with old grease/ oil and sand and just junk from over time i took some good a penetrating oil and break cleaner to clean it/ free it all up after that i re greased with some nice spray can 3 in 1 white grease seems to be moving more freely and also the sensor tab inside is like new and has nothing covering it so hoping it makes a good connection to get rid of my hood latch open notification.. and also hopefully it gives my springs another few years before having to completely replace my latch!! Thanks for the great reply, and you know its these replies that I really enjoy as they are pretty personal and it lets me have a bit of a conversation with someone so I find that really cool. In relation to your comment about KZbin being hard, it is !!!! But it is very rewarding, but it's hard work. I have a few years on here, and my first vids were straight from my phone to KZbin. You can't really do that anymore as the standards are quite high, but that makes it fun!! I use Final Cut Pro for all my editing, and any serious KZbinr needs good software, as it really helps the finished product, plus it saves time!!! I probably spend about the same time editing as I do fixing things, so its a substantial amount of time. The other thing is I'm always wondering what to post. I do post once a week, but it's what to post. If I post too much of the same thing then that's not good, sometimes an oil change is too simple for some viewers, but others love it. Then sometimes I get kind of complex (like soldering a jaguar circuit board to fix the AC) and that is too much for some people. So I try to find a balance and rotate the content so its always varied. I'm quite impressed with your audio mod on your car. I have built a few boxes before and love stereo mods. I really like the old school amps, I have owned a few Precision Power, Phoenix Gold, and Rockford amps. Very good :) The factory Lexus speakers are actually not too bad, and adding the sub with the extra amp is a great idea. I'm glad you soldered and used shrink wrap, I'm the same way !! Not surprised you latch was all gummed up, mine was really bad and the spring was rotted so it just kind of disintegrated and fell apart. You know I don't know why these Lexus cars get sand in there, mine had a ton. I did a full engine clean (still to post) and I took out a couple pounds of sand in total, I show it, and I don't know how it all got there. Maybe this car was at the beach a lot haha!! I have a funny feeling the bolts that were holding my latch to the metal piece are NOT the right ones, they didn't have that little bump at the base of the bolt (7:37 for ref.) Would happen to know where I can get some like these?

Yes, most likely someone was in there and replaced the bolts with someone saying, just put any bolt in, its just a bolt..... Not realizing they are a special bolt. My guess would be to phone Lexus and provide your ser# and see if they have a part number for it. There is the possibility that bolt is used on many difference models of Lexus cars.

@@diegocruz530 You could always disconnect the electrical connector to the latch and then jump the terminals. The light should go out, if you have the vehicle running and can't turn off the dash light off then its in the wiring to the dash, and not the hood latch.

Hey if it’s the u shaped thing that holds the cable end ball at the 6:20 min mark I think that is just held on by a spring. I think that’s pretty hard to break. If you can send me a pic at [e-mail] I’ll take a look at it for you.
