Garagistic Solid Mount Shifter and DSSR - Installation

I didn't waste much time installing the Garagistic solid mount shifter or DSSR into the E36 after getting it delivered. Weather was terrible but I didn't want to wait to install it.
If you are going to install this shifter you will absolutely need upgraded transmission mounts (and possibly engine mounts) to minimize drivetrain movement. You will also want to install this shifter with a matching DSSR for your application or you won't be getting the full benefit of this amazing shifter.
Additionally in this video I touch base on the differences in selector shaft joints. The Garagistic DSSR was designed with the old style joint in mind which requires the use of yellow plastic washers (shims) when installed on stock shifters. This style joint is no longer available and has been replaced by a part that has the shimming built into it. The shims are only requires for a factory selector rod. If you replace your joint from the old style to the new style you will need to file the bushing down slightly for the DSSR to fit.
Installation is pretty straight forward with this shifter and it seems to be a quality built piece. I recommend it based on my positive experiences so far.

The throw you have it adjusted to is perfect, exactly what I’m looking for myself, it’s direct, no slop and perfect amount of throw to time your shifts with your clutch

I have Garagistics Supreme short throw which is the non-solid mount version of the same shifter as you. I love it and would definitely recommend it to anybody not wanting to go hard bushings.

I won’t admit this too publicly but I ordered the knock off cliq tuning from alibaba for 60 bucks.. the 229mm version. Let’s see what it looks like when it arrives. :)

I was thinking I was crazy that the DSSR wasn't fitting over the swivel joint. Did you file the dssr or the pivot pin itself?

I filed the swivel joint down. It was the easiest way to do it. I think when they designed the DSSR they must have use the original style joint that needed the plastic washer for spacing. For whatever reason BMW made that change a few years ago to the swivel joint that has the added thickness the washers would normally provide included as part of the joint itself.

I did this install and my shifter leans towards 5th I’m not sure why. I watched this and did the install the same

Shifter detents. 5th gear lean is a common problem on ZF 310/320 5-speed boxes. I have a video on my channel on how to replace those detents. You probably never noticed it with a shorter shift lever.

A solid mount shifter is unnecessarily too expensive in my opinion. You get that solid gear change with every short shifter and to get your shifter play down you just need to replace the bushings. Gear arm, gear ball and the shifter joint bushings are the ones. Solid mount shifter has no superior solidness to add over these. You can even change your own shifter to a short shifter by just cutting under the ball and adding 2-3cm solid steel by welding it into place, saving a few bucks or just order a short shifter off ebay for 3-4 dollars is gonna work just fine but will take more time to achieve the same result

Dssr ist just too damn expensive $95 for 4 pieces of thrash metal welded together. You can make it at home under $5 yourself.

I disagree. I went from a B&M short shifter to the Garagistic solid mount in my e30, it’s 100 times better.
