On the first item i remember a story from an old german veteran who was at stalingrad in WW2. He had to leave his weapons outside when he went inside a bunker. If he took the gun with him inside, the very cold gun would become wet with condensation and freeze up solid once outside again. They learned that the hard way.
@joshuapowell2675
@joshuapowell2675 Жыл бұрын
My theory is that the AR failed the ice test for the same reason it won the mud test. AKs have more gaps around the bolt carrier which likely lets the water drain out and lets mud in. ARs have tight seals which keeps mud out but also keeps water in. So while it let the AR blow through the mud, more water stayed in the bolt assembly and froze. Obviously the selector switch on the AK is more robust regardless too

A gun designed to defend a country that annually turns into millions of square kms of frozen wasteland does well in freezing conditions.. and somehow that is a surprise to a lot of people. The big trigger guard - glove accesibility, the big selector lever - more leverage to get it moving when frozen and actually be able to operate it at all in heavy gloves.. and many other such compromises that make it a shit gun for a sunny day at the range, lo-drag hi-speed never hitting the dirt style of use. But its near perfect as something designed in the 40s to be mass produced for a huge army of conscripts that have to roll around in the dirt which depending on the season and region of Russia can commonly be: almost liquid, sand, frozen, actual swamp or even more fucking frozen. Fun times were had by the Wehrmacht when the knee-deep, all-covering liquid river of mud went straight into the frozen-as-hell stage pretty much overnight.

You may think the Garand Thumb Ice test kinda irrelevant, but I've witnessed the effects of it in person in the 'balmy' temperatures of just around 30 degrees F. Range day, after a snow and there's freezing rain. I saw my ejection port cover freeze open and the selector switch get pretty stiff to operate. Steel and aluminum will NOT hold heat and tight tolerances and water tight are VERY different things. It told me that even in those not severe temps if there's a lot of moisture around, extra maintenance will be required for my weapon.

Simply going into a warm building causes a cold gun to collect moisture that, when you go back outside, freezes up. So, no need for snowstorm or rain or dropping the gun into a puddle or something like that for this to happen.

I got a Yugo SKS from Big 5 Sporting Goods. They're based in Kalifornia, so they'd spot-welded a half-pound (at least) "muzzle brake" over the grenade launcher attachment to comply with CA law. As part of that process (I'm guessing), they'd cleaned the gun for me. Removing the "muzzle brake" took like 10 minutes with a file and a Dremel.

To be fair (to be faiah) the Kalashnikov Group already did an AK vs AR ice test a year ago, and their concise synopsis was "these rifles perform best in the conditions they were designed for. Which rifle is right for you depends on what you require from it." InRange already showed that the AR beats the AK in mud and that both do acceptable in dust, and KG and now Garand Thumb showed the AK beats the AR in cold/ice. Doesn't take a genius to predict that outcome.

It's arguably much easier to douse your weapon in light fuel and light it on fire to melt the ice or throw it under the hood of a vehicle to warm it than it is to detail clean the crevices of debris. 🤷‍♂️ But we do need a new upper and lower with lots of room like an AK so it can be the goat it was always meant to be. /S, just a little.

One of my friends from the UK saw one documentary on Flint and changed her mind on guns - she still hates guns, something I totally respect because I believe in Free Speech even if the UK is a bit annoyed with the concept, but she at least understands why it is that guns in the hands of a law abiding gun owner are often the best deterrent against threats.

Yeah im from the UK and was unsure what i thought about it. My view is still "im glad they arent common here" but the main thing i was confused by was "why is the solution to gun violence more guns?" After watching more of Donut and his police breakdowns i sorta realised that its kinda the only solution. So many people dont wanna give up their guns and if the government did come knocking asking for your guns, the only people who would willingly give them up are law abiding citizens, and those are the exact people who i wouldnt mind owning guns because they probably arent gonna do anything bad with it.

It's basically a novelty souvenir, it doesn't actually bestow any legal right to the title of Lord/Laird. The seller of the deed to a piece of land (if recognised by british peerage laws) can initiate the process to rightfully claiming an aristocratic title but there are a whole bunch of legal hoops to jump through before you can legally use the title. It's an expensive and time consuming process involving lawyers, government officials and tons of official documents without any guarantee of success or tangible benefit at the end. Being American definitely doesn't help because I'm fairly sure there is something in the constitution about needing permission from Congress to accept a title from a foreign head of state.

Before buying it, I asked my local gun dealer, who I trust and who was not the dealer selling it, his opinion of the Rossi guns. He had very positive things to say about them. So, I went ahead with the purchase. I have been very happy with mine. Only complaint is how stiff the side loading gate is but that can be easily remedied if one wishes. Some people claimed the metal edges around the loading gate are too sharp. I haven't had any issues there, but my attitude is, "Guns are supposed to be dangerous things, not child safe toys. If your gun bites your finger off every once in a while, to remind you of that, it's a good thing!" Some people are just haters. When you do get to 2 million subs I think it would be really cool to see a video with your father, going through his collection (that is only if the two of y’all are comfortable/able to do so). I remember in one of your previous videos you mentioned going into your dads collection and just taking apart and rebuilding AK’s for hours. I think that would be a pretty wholesome and really cool video! Hope you reach 2 mil soon!

I'm an AR guy and I was absolutely ecstatic seeing those expensive ARs get locked up. I loved it so much. People sit there and bash my aero Precision homebuild when they put their 3k Daniel Defense next to it but guess what it's going to freeze up just the same as my aero. Hahahahaha

@@Devin_Stromgren yeah, in the inrange mud tests, the ak didnt do as well as people expected, and while the ar did a lot better on those no person with a bit of sense would doubt the ak's legendary reliability based on just a very specific and hard test. they are tools, with certain design and build tolerances. what might be good for one thing might lack a bit on other.
