What is really crazy is the US navy used the Lee Navy rifle in 6mm all the way back in 1895, and they even made arguments that this was the future of bullet technology that small high velocity rounds out perform larger slower bullets in tissue disruption etc. This is in a era when some guns still shot giant 11mm bullets and German Mausers would adopt 7.92x57. The US was too ahead of the curve at the time, problems manufacturing the ammo and the expensive complex Lee Navy rifles droomed widespread adoption, but it's wild to think engineers were that forward thinking all the way back then. They would feel very vindicated today with the way cartridge technology has progressed.

6.5x55 Swedish (1894), 6.5 Jap (1897), 6.5 Carcano (1890), 6.5 Mannlicher (1892) etc... To nail something so close to the invention of smokeless powder only to semi-abandon it seems odd like you said, but if I had to guess it was because of the ever present logistical desire of militaries for ammo parity between arms, and the notion arose that a smaller bullet like 6mm would be insufficient in its role as an emplaced or light machine gun caliber, so they scaled everything up, with small arms following. Just a guess...

It’s a great round but man trying to get past 2500 fps out of a 18 in barrel is kinda meh man. I’ve had great accuracy with mine but that velocity hurts. @Courtesyflush522 ай бұрын
@@MagicMahn well that’s kinda the thing. It’s not a close range round if you need max velocity up close. But keep in mind a 105gr 6mm bullet loses velocity at half the rate that 77gr 5.56 does. By 250 yards or so, 6mm ARC is actually traveling FASTER than the Mk262 out of the same barrel length

For those of you that might be building your own 6mm ARC upper: some of the barrels out there actually have the gas block out at a farther position than rifle length. If your 18" (or longer) barrel comes with a gas block and gas tube, this might be the case. In my case, the gas block stuck out about an inch passed the 15" handguard that I intended to use, and it took me a lot of searching to find a handguard that was long enough to cover the gas block, but not so long that it got in the way of the muzzle device. I eventually found a 16.5" from Hera Industries that does the job.

It shoots < .5 moa, and easily and energetically rings steel at 1000 yards. It's a way better shooter than my AR10 in .308. The AR10 is heavy, fairly hard recoiling rifle, about 1 moa on a good day, and couldn't barely hit steel at 700 yards. I've had a few nice rifles, but amazed with my 6mm ARC, only cost about $1400.00. It's more expensive to shoot vs my 5.56 AR, but super fun!

In 1988 in H.S. I designed a 6.5mm cartridge that used a cut down 7.62 NATO case. I designed it to fit intot he M16 and it never took off. I also designed a cartridge for police use in 1986 that took a 44 Rem Mag case and knecked it down to 5.56 to use 55gr. FMJ bullet. The idea was to put them in like 9.5 inch barreled revolvers to give Police Rifle like performance that took up very little space for use against people wearing body armour in early 1980's. I took mechanical drafting and architecture starting in middle school and took Industrial arts starting in middle school so by 6th grade I could stick weld and operate a metal break, lathe, end ill and metal shaper.

They also screwed up the heat treat in the process which resulted in brittle actions that liked to shatter. It's been a clusterfokk since day one!

I had a 6mm ARC 20" that really dived deep on with bolt manufacturing materials and reloading. Hornady claims about 2750ft/s out of an 18" barrel. I have found that their statements are false, as shown on Mike's video there too. The flaw with this cartridge is that there are 2 SAAMI Specifications for 6mm ARC. One for semi-autos (ARs at 52k PSI), and one for bolt actions (62k PSI). The reasoning behind this is that the enlarged rim diameter compared to a 5.56, a 6mm ARC (which uses 6.5 grendel as parent case, and therein a 6.5grendel type 2 bolt) cannot exceed 52k PSI and will have too much bolt thrust force imparted onto the AR bolt locking lugs. This is the same for 6.5 grendel bolts. This is something that's been documented and known. If a manufacturer were to find whatever secret sauce metallurgy Ruger does in their SFAR (a small frame AR15 patterned rifle that shoots .308) and pair it with a 6mm ARC, I think they'd really be improving the cartridge-firearm system for reliability, and to handle the hotter loadings rearward forces. I would really encourage flannel daddy to really give the firearm a hard run to see how many rounds it would take to start seeing bolt lug sheering. Back to the difference of PSI, Semi-Auto according to SAAMI is rated for 52k PSI, and Bolt Actions are 62k PSI. This is on hornady's reloading database. Please note that when you purchase a box from Hornady, neither say whether it's specific for Bolt Actions or Semi-Autos. So, being the devious little creature I am, I buy a box of factory Hornady 108gr ELD-M and a box of Hornady 105gr BTHP "black" - same ammo flannel daddy shot. I set aside 5 bullets from each box of 20 to disassemble and measure everything about the cartridge, including the round, powder charge, the weights, length of brass, so on. I then calibrated a model on Gordon's Reloading Tool, and shot rounds to have it match up accordingly. What I found is that both of these rounds are at about 55-58k PSI depending on ambient temperature. that's 3-6k over SAAMI specifications for semi-autos, which is what this round is more commonly used for. As for the pressure issues aside, finding an adequate powder to get those single digit SDs those long range shooters desire is fairly difficult for higher grain bullets 95gr to 115gr and still getting decent velocity and complete powder burn. Many many times I've seen even out of my 20" 6mm Arc, getting incomplete powder burn with the typical high velocity loadings. That gives it velocity variations, and leads to vertical stringing - taking the shooter out of the equation. This cartridge really does shine though when using lower grain projectiles from 90gr and below, getting really nice results, even exceeding 3,000ft/s in some instances. Coyote and hog hunters in particular like this round for its effectiveness. TL;DR: PSI too hot for semi. Bolt go boom. small weight bullet good. Cheers from an autist.

I had actually contacted CMMG in regards to this when I found out they were releasing a rifle in 6mm ARC. I asked if they planned to use the Mutant PowerBolt to utilize the larger 308 style bolt head to handle the stronger PSI of this cartridge to get the most out of what Hornady stated in it's advertisements. Unfortunately they decided to go the same route as everyone else when building around this cartridge. To me they really missed out on an opportunity given they have the equipment to build a perfect semi auto rifle for the 6mm ARC.

Legitimize? Varmint dudes jumped on this immediately, at least nearly everyone i know and most of their aquaintances. Its a DOD gun also. Imo its gonna be hard to beat it in small frame if you remove the ammo avail factor. My personal builds in it are spot on awesome. Tuned to shoot butter soft and tac drivers. As is with most of the varmint crowd that grabbed it too. The new 6 max cartridge is pretty great too for lighter projectiles. 22 arc has also lit off in the varmint crowd, same as 6 arc, everyone ik, and their friends has or is in the process of it also. Is it the be all, end all for a fighting rifle? I dont think so, but it has its place for sure.

In regards to wearing out the guns faster Geissele did a lot of work to make a stronger bolt and extractor, multi port gas system for softer bolt cycling and a reinforced upper with new enhanced barrel extension to make it as strong and long lasting as a comparable m4 platform
@seanmtactical60694 ай бұрын
Lots to unpackaged here. The changes from 556 NATO to 6 ARC is the bolt, the barrel, and the mag. The upper is the same. That bun may have a different upper, but it's not necessary. Because the case size changes from 556 to 6 ARC, the bold head face loses metal material typically there to make it strong enough for the 62k psi of 556. 556 case head diameter is 0.377". 6.8 SPC case head is 0.420". 6 ARC is made off of the latest 6.5 Grendel design (called Grendel Type II) and is 0.440" diameter. The difference between the original Grande and Grendel Type II is the depth of the bolt face. It was 0.125" originally, Type II is 0.136". This was done to help re-enforce the bolt's lugs from sheering off or mushrooming out. It's still an issue and I've seen both 6 ARC and 6.5 Grendel II destroy their bolts. As long as you are running Hornady ammo or reloading with understanding of what you are reloading for, you should be fine. The best operating system set up I have found for 6 ARC is with a Rifle +1" gas length. This can affect your hand guard selection. So what does this all mean? The best combination for the AR 15 platform would be a 6.8 SPC cartridge with a 90-108 gr 6mm bullet. Well, this just happens to already been made. It's called 6mm HAGAR and White Oak Armament used to make barrels for it. Hornady made a short run of brass for it, but it would be easy to wildcat the round. Sadly, WOA doesn't make the barrels anymore. SOLGW is making a new 6mm round called 6mm MAX and is made off the .350 Legend case. It's essentially a 6x45 but off a different case. Both HAGAR and MAX offer better bolt reliability over ARC and achieve equitable ballistics. I personally would like to see 6 HAGAR come back. Lastly, the belief that bullets lose stability when going trans-sonic has basically been debunked. They just became so effected by wind and gravity it looks like they have become unstable. If you want to see this is true, go watch MarkandSam after Work on KZbin.

I am a super 6mm ARC fan. I have built both an AR platform gun and a bolt gun. You brought up that the wear on the 6 ARC is greater than the AR-15/M4/M16, which is true, [but] it is a lot less than the wear of the 6.8x51mm. Forgive me, but I am going into a rant. The chamber pressure of the 6.8x51mm (or .227 Fury) at 80,000 psi is going to destroy the guns, especially at high rates of fire. The estimate before having to re-barrel and re-bolt the M7 used in combat is 10,000 rds. You were an operator with the Air Force and know better than most of us how fast you can burn thru 10,000 rds in combat. The 6.8x51mm cartridge was allegedly [needed] to defeat high tech body armor. Hmmm…. How have we been defeating body armor so far? Oh, I know, Green Tip Steel Core, 5.56 rounds. I am pretty sure that they can make a 6mm bullet that will be more than efficient enough to defeat any type of body armor that will be worn by an opposing combatant. Let’s talk about the gun, the M7. The basic gun is nothing but a short piston AR10, which means it is a much heavier gun than the AR15 platform 6 ARC, and it is being sole sourced from Sig Sauer. My very personal opinion, the M7 and 6.8x51mm cartridge were an extremely stupid decision by the Army. The weapon is heavy, almost 10 lbs with the suppressor attached. I would be surprised if the gun isn’t closer to 15 lbs after you add an optic, weapons light and laser system. Now add the weight of a basic 120 rd loadout w/mags and you have another 11 lbs. I really don’t think a basic rifleman is going to want to ‘walk’ around or hike with 25 lbs of weapons system and ammo. Now let’s add one more factor. There is really no civilian market for the .277 Fury or 6.8x51mm. With chamber pressures of 80,000 psi and a caliber that is between 6.5 CM and .308, it really offers nothing to the civilian market. Sig will sell a few MCX Spears in .277 Fury, to collectors or those that just want to have the latest military firearm, but I personally don’t believe it will be anything more than a niche cartridge. Making the 6mm ARC the replacement cartridge for the 5.56x45mm is the only thing that makes any sense and should be painfully obvious to Army leadership. The only thing that you need to convert a standard 5.56x45mm AR15/M4 is a barrel, bolt and magazine. What does the U.S. military have? Thousands of AR15 lowers, uppers and parts. All of which can still be used. What else uses the AR 15 platform? The 300 BLK, which is heavily used right now by SOCOM and other operator units. Anyone with even a slight interest in guns can understand that 6mm ARC is the better way to go over the 6.8x51mm M7.
