The 6mm arc was designed for the ar15 platform. It also makes a good bolt gun for deer. SOF wanted a cartridge that could be easily carried like the m4 but had the capability to engage targets over 500m because the bad guys would sit just outside the 5.56 range and lob rounds in just hoping to hit someone. And thus the 6mm arc was made. In the right hands it is capable of accuracy at 1000m.

Faster starting velocity and higher bc= more velocity down range in a cartridge class where minimum expansion velocity (around 2000fps for most projectiles) is your determining factor for maximum effective range on game. Thefore, what we see as an "irrelevant" cartridge (because we may be thinking about elk) is actually ideal for Whitetail deer at closer ranges! That is why it is important that we take those situations into strong consideration! Horneday seems to be the only manufacturer thinking about what the majority of the country wants and needs, rather than the rare international hunter seeking a stump thumper of a Magnum cartridge! The 6mm ARC, from what I have gathered, is a DOD & Hornady project to make a cartridge to be more effective than the 5.56 at the extended ranges (500-850 yards), yet, lighter weight than the .308 and also interchangeable with the M4/AR-15 platform. A soldier can have one lower receiver and two upper receivers (5.56 & 6mm ARC). When engaging at enemies beyond the effective range of the 5.56, the soldier can switch uppers and effectively do so. I know I am late to the table, but I just watched the Hornady podcast on the 6mm ARC. That is where I got this info. Note: Combat is different than hunting. I do not encourage anyone take a 700 yard shot on a deer with a 6mm ARC. I wouldn't take a 500 yard shot on a deer with a 7mm Rem mag. My personal hunting limit is 400 yards... and that is far...

Rumor has it that an 6mm ARC with the steel base of the 6.8X51 Sig can push a 108 grain bullet out of the barrel at 3,100 fps, making it almost on pair with 6.5 Creedmoor. The downside is the high chamber pressure, but that's not a problem if the gun is built to handle it.

This was a collaborative effort from my friend who happened to know Joyce Hornady. This became and is the 6X45 cartridge. I have a set of dies marked 6X45 Old Sarge which was my friend. Bill Alexander pretty much hit it over the fence with the 6.5 Grendel, but dropped the ball with SAMI and proprietary patents etc. Ever since, people have been trying to catch lightning in a bottle with cartridges like the .224 Valk 6mmARC and everything else. I may be wrong, but the 6.5Gren beats them all out to 1,000yds and the 6ARC eventually catches up around 1,100yds. I don't know anyone who's ever taken that long a shot, but on retained energy and BC, the 6.5 Grendel beats all the other boutique AR mag-length cartridges. It baffles me why manufacturers don't work up more offerings for it. Using Ron's list, Bill Alexander checked all these boxes 20 years ago, with a cartridge that can stabilize everything from 80 grains up to 129-130 grains and do it out of a 2.26" cartridge and do it with more power.

I've always wondered why so many people hunt deer with a 300 wm or 7mm mag here in the woods of va, I've never shot a deer past 75 yards. If you're not shooting past 300 yards, why not go with the 6.5 Grendel ? More energy inside of 400 yards with a heavier bullet and basically the same wind drift and trajectory. I recently bought a Grendel upper for my AR-15 after comparing the two. I saw more of an advantage in the 6.5 Grendel over the 6 ARC at the shorter ranges you would use an AR-15 for. At longer ranges maybe, but then your power factor drops enough you need to use a bigger cartridge anyway. I don't get it.

This looks a lot like a 6ppc. Good Review and lots of info. I can see the practicality in that it can be used in an AR platform. Hornady has been very good at marketing new cartridges.. Personally, if I were dead set on using a very heavy for caliber bullet such as the 108 or 115, Id buy a 6mm barrel blank with an 8 twist, chamber it in .243 and throat it deep enough to accept the long bullets. Most rifles chambered in .243 have lots of room in the mag box.. But Hornady would miss out on the profits if it wasnt new and improved.

It is very closely related to the 6mm PPC, as is the 6.5 Grendel. They are the pretty much the same case with the the shoulder moved foreword to increase powder capacity. Compared to the 6mm PPC, the shoulder of the ARC is 0.0459" farther foreword. The overall length is based on what will fit in an AR15 magazine. The 6mmAR and .243 LBC are a decade older, but based on the Grendel case which has the shoulder pushed a little farther foreword ( 0.030" farther).

Is it really all that and a bag of chips?
@DrewEdwardBacklas2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm Though it’s true the grendel can push similar weighted bullets at similar velocity to the arc, a 100gn 6.5 bullet has nowhere near the BC that a 103-108 6mm bullet does. Both pushed at around 2700 with some pretty warm handloads will do the job out to 250 yards or so but the arc really starts to show advantage at longer range with the BC. I believe it to be sufficient for deer/pronghorn to 400+yards. Grendel shines with a ~120gn projectile on the same game animals out to about 300 but your going to have a tough time topping 2450fps. I own a grendel and don’t plan to switch to the arc any time soon because it suits my need for the ranges I use the rifle at. But when I compare them objectively I do think the 6arc is the superior cartridge in an ar15.

@@DrewEdwardBacklas True enough because I’ve made the same arguments against the 308 vs the Grendel… And to more effect the Creadmoor … But neither will best the 308 / 5.56 because of government contracts… So while the ARC may have wind / speed advantage because of BC… Is it enough to split the small action market again? Remember both the Grendel and the ARC have same AR bolt issues that the long distance snobs use, when they say “They won’t trust the Grendel’s bolt face, When they tip up the pounder can …”. Is there really enough delta to matter? As you said the Grendel does what you need for the type shots your taking…. My question is still, in a world with 100’s of millions of rifle cartridges no one remembers, why?

@@untermench3502 I spent 5 years as a fleet DM carrying both a m4 and an m110. I’ve shot my fair share of m118 with good effect. But my 6.5 creed and 6gt recoil substantially less. Shoot flatter and handle wind better including maintain supersonic further. In competition those are benefits I NEED. Hunting my 300prc is easier to load 175-220gr to a mag feedable oal and shoot more consistently plus I have no problem finding components for any of these. Sure I have to load but I like to load and I prefer to have more consistent ammo that I get from a box. Sure 30-06 or 308 are “good enough” and “that’s what we have always done.” But that’s the same thing your grandparents said when they started rolling out automobiles. That’s the same thing the marine corps said when we switched to using optics on every service rifle. And that’s the same thing people said when we stopped treating people with heroin, cocaine and meth in the medical field on a regular basis. But the fact of the matter is these fancy cartridges are better. You can’t defy physics. A 220gr bullet at a particular velocity does not care what cartridge it comes out of as long as it’s assembled with attention to detail. But these new cartridges are easier to load, offer specific advantages that shooters are looking for, and are going to take up a piece of the action. I should add that these shorter cartridges do offer one advantage that you can’t really argue and that is that a shorter/ stouter powder column burns more consistently and will reduce your velocity ES and SD resulting in better group consistency at nearly any distance. I LOVE my 1903 and my LRB medium match NM m14. But I don’t take those to a prs match and I don’t try and shoot them to 1000 and beyond.

(Hey, it's all I had that came close enough in precision to compete. lol) While I love the M1A/.308 I knew if I wanted to go further I had to change. Wanting to stay in gas gun division I started kicking around the idea of a 6.5 creed AR but then I came across 6 ARC. (This was mid fall 2020) Did what research I could and decided to go with 6 ARC instead. It has been one of the best decisions I've made going off what little info was available at the time. I ended up going with a aero precision 24" heavy barrel upper and with factory 108gr eld-match ammo it shoots (consistently) 3/4 MOA. I then started handloading for it. I played with a couple powders via hornady book specs, wasn't real happy. While I could get good velocity/groups out of leverevolution it isn't very temp stable so the search continued. I eventually went off books and developed my own loads using VV N150/berger 105 hybrid target bullets. Velocity is ok (load node came in at 2624 fps) but my sd/es are crazy low for gas gun and it's extremely temp stable and, if I do my part, will hold 1/2 MOA consistently. And kinetic energy downrange? Yep, absolutely no problem telling when I hit the steel. I do have plans to build a bolt gun in this cartridge. (For hunting purposes) Will I give up my M1A/.308? Nope. I dearly love that rifle but for competition purposes I'll absolutely stick with 6 ARC. In a gas gun I just don't see how it gets much better than this cartridge.

I love the 6.5 Grendel and thats why I've stayed away from the ARC

I agree but look at both arc and Grendel Is really a 6 ppc Got multi Grendel and never look back

If it’s an AR platform it’s just a barrel change. I love both 6 ARC and 6.5 Grendel.

Both are excellent

Besides the heavier bullet weights, this cartridge was specifically designed for the AR15 platform. All the other 6mm/.243 are long action and require bolt action or AR10 sized rifles.

*.280 Bristish* would have cut 70 years of needless 'development,' just saying.

This ^. Strange whow younger generations rediscover sage knowledge. The Brits were on to something with their .280.

Yeah, I believe the Mausers which so impressed us in Cuba were 7mm. If we would've gone 7mm (or 6.5) after the Krag, we probably would've skipped the wild 7.62/5.56 swing.

Elmer Keith is spinning in his grave! This all started back when the PPC line of cartridges came out and began the process of redefining accuracy and efficiency, in both case design and bullet design. Further developments, like the 6.5 Grendel and now this 6mm ARC, are changing the way we look at how effective a small cartridge can be for hunting at reasonable ranges. Those of us with 35 Remington rifles and 6.5 TC/U barrels in our gun safes are just grinning and watching the masses discover this "new" concept. :)

I feel vindicated. You and I had a short discussion on velocity where I argued I am happy to give up velocity in favor of more consistent accuracy. I think we were talking about 6mm or 6.5mm bullets. I see no reason to push a round out at >2900 fps when ~2600 fps gets the job done with potentially better accuracy. I don't care that my slower bullet has more drop out to 300 yards as long as I can consistently hit what I am aiming at (staying within your 6in target for example). Flat shooting is not all what it's cracked up to be with the cost of barrels and powder. Maybe ARC stands for exactly that - increased amplification of bullet trajectory? Thanks for opening your thought process and coming to the dark side... 😁

Its a 308 / 7.62x51, scaled down to 6mm size. Similar velocities, similar trajectories, plenty of energy for most game you'll encounter and a good all-round catridge when loaded up or down. I reckon a 22" barrelled Ruger American in this would be a really nice budget performer.

@@boingkster a 243 is a 308 scaled down to 6mm.
@boingkster2 жыл бұрын
@@WayStedYou there's a big difference between "necked down" and "scaled down", ie a 17 Remington is a necked down 223 but a 17 hornet looks very much like a scaled down 223.

Wow. I don’t even hunt or anything. But 10/10 would hang with you Ron. You seem to have really good entertaining food for thought!
