When I was doing my military training with the Finnish military, we used the RK-62's, which is a Finnish AK-variant champered in 7.62x39. My rifle was old and most likely seen thousands and thousands of rounds. During one winter training I accidentally fell through the ice into a knee deep small puddle and the rifle got completely dipped into the muddy icy water. It was about -25C then. After about 15 minutes the rifle was completely frozen solid. I had to give it a solid whack against a tree to get most of the ice off, after which it worked perfectly and I shot 3 mags without a malfunction. AK-style rifles really are amazing in cold weather.

I would definitely say that your tests are applicable to the real world. I’m a Swede so it’s below 0 celsius a couple of months a year. No you won’t drop your rifle in a lake, but what will happen is that you take a prone position in the snow, then mount up in a vehicle allowing the snow to melt, then out in the cold again. That’s how you will most likely experience freezing. If not mounting in vehicles you might get inside a tent that’s above 0 celsius then during the morning you move out and if you didn’t wipe your rifle dry, well it’s gonna freeze.

So true. If we are talking about the swedish 10 or 20 men dome tents then we used to leave the weapons either outside of the tent (once you were out of the foxholes or not patrolling the camp) inside the wooden tent box or sleep with the weapon underneath the head pushed against the outside of the tent. The heat wouldnt get there and since the outer skirt is packed with snow, it stayed nice and icy.

We use a modified version of the FNC here in Sweden. During an Arctic exercise above the polar circle we had issues with the rifle freezing up and the way to fix it was to keep the rifle at the same temperature at all times. We put the rifles towards the fabric of our tents in order for them not to get warm, start to “sweat” and then cause a malfunction. We also kept the rifles completely free of any kind of lubrication. We use CLP here and it doesn’t like temperatures below freezing. Before an offensive we would “warm fire” our weapons in order to make sure they we working before the assault. This was done during temperatures raging from -11C to -33C. Regards, Nic

Don't get snow on the rifle? Try that after one hears (either as training command or real sound) shrieking noise in the air. At that moment the thickest, nearest snow bank is your best friend, in which you dive with gusto. Hopefully remembering to atleast protect the muscle, probably by slamming one of your palms over it. Here in Alaska we have all kinds of problems with our M4's. Lessons learned: keep your rifle outside in extreme cold, the warmth cycles of inside a vehicle or building then outside creates condensation in the rifle that freezes. Mags exposed to snow will freeze ammunition together and to the walls of a mag causing failure to feed once removed from the warmth. Leave the rifles as dry as possible with very little lube, even though the freeze point is stated as stupid low it usually starts gelling much warmer and it's enough to cause malfunctions. Also make sure you're wearing a face protection like a balaclava because you will give yourself contact frost bite on plastic stocks. It's great when you go to lift your head up after a qual and your cheek is stuck to the stock Edit: same applies for pistols. I've got a P220 10mm and and P320 9mm that I've got some data on but need to spend much more time and ammo to say conclusively, but my impressions are the hammer fired steel frame performs better than the polymer striker boi. I've mag dumped till both were hot then dropped in the snow, let it sit for a few seconds, then flipped for a few more seconds, then put them on a table until they froze. Round chambered in both. The P220 fired and blew shit out of the rails and cycled no problems, on reload the mag catch didn't work until a little extra pressure was applied then it seated and ran. The P320 fired the chambered round then failure to return to battery. I had to beat the slide forward till seated then it finished the mag. Reload, no amount of finagling would get the frozen mag catch to hold a mag but I kept my support hand under the mag and it successfully and awkwardly fed till the mag was empty. Keep testing your gear and yourself ladies and gentlemen.

One guy ended up with severe frostbite in his upper lip because he idiotically kept his stock on his cheek without wearing a balaclava. Almost like the AK was designed by one of the snowiest countries in the world lol. Paddle mags and no bolt catch prevent both parts from locking up a lot better. Open sights can get snow knocked out of them easier. Long safety selector allows for a lot more leverage. Then it was giving of mist for a while, when the shooting heat melted and evaporating water vapor condensates in our to mist. It is just better assume one had at minimum a constant condensation frost layer inside the rifle. That is many why Arctic places use long strokes. No need for forward assist, it is in built and you need it. When in the cold the recoil spring is little stiff, the guide rails little frosty, metal parts little tight from thermal shrink and everything little sticky with cold moisture wanting to grab and hold things together. You need that forward assist. As you saw with our host here, slamming the back of the AK handle to make sure "it is fully rotated to full battery, so it will now operate". That isn't that rare sight to see soldiers (atleast us conscripts did it) in cold giving the long strokes handle little "love tap", even if the rifle seemed to operate fine. Used the HK416N during my time in the Norwegian Army, and we had very few issues with freezing. We obviously spent time removing snow and ice to avoid freezing, but the HK held up great after days or weeks outside in below -30 degrees celsius. The only issue I ran into from time to time was extraction failure when shooting blanks, which honestly is too be expected considering the much lower pressure than live rounds. One factor to consider is that we NEVER left any CLP on the weapon during the winter months, and most of the time field maintenance was done dry (without CLP) as the oil would freeze and lead to cycle failure.

There are a ton of variables that influence the cold weather performance of weapons. I've carried frozen rifles (M4, AR-10, and M40) for a living for 17 years in a place where we see seven months of snow and temps regularly well below zero. Besides poorly maintained weapons, I've found the biggest contributor to malfunctions is moisture. Condensation will form on and in a rifle in no-time flat and freeze just as quick when reentering the outside world. Snow will stick to a hot barrel and action, melt into the smallest nooks and crannies, and refreeze as quick as it takes aluminum to cool. My weapons are never oiled with more than wiping a lightly saturated cloth over the points of contact, and my firing pin channels are always bone dry. In the winter, my AR-10 is the only fussy rifle that I use the lightest film of graphite lube. If someone is running an adjustable gas block on their rifle, open that thing up in the winter and get the widest performance parameters you can get while it's cold.
@justindunlap12353 жыл бұрын
yep the condensation forming when you come inside is the hardest to get around. some hunting cabins in the mountains near me get around the issue by putting a gun cabinet or rack on the porch.
@justindearmond13 жыл бұрын
wouldnt more oil be a good thing? wouldnt that prevent the moisture from forming on and in the weapons? amateur at best here with firearms, i can shoot well enough to defend my family and have several weapons in various calibers, but have little shooting experience apart from limited range time and shooting at friends farms (middle of Kansas is awesome for things like that, everyone here is armed, more or less.), so forgive my ignorance.
@fjcruzer13 жыл бұрын
@@justindearmond1 it’s kind of a catch-22. More oil will help to repel moisture but in extreme cold conditions it can also thicken and gum up causing its own set of issues. That’s reason for the mention of graphite lubricant. Graphite lubricants are dry so they won’t have viscosity issues and are still generally water repellent, but dry applications don’t last as long as traditional wet/oil based.

@GetTheFO3 жыл бұрын
@@gamingrex2930 having a wider gas port opening allows for a more violent cycling of the action. In a dirty rifle it helps combat the friction of built up carbon and gunk as well as if build up has forming in the gas port itself. This is the exact reason I carry all of my weapons in a "temperature-variability ready state". Even my concealed glock. The weapon is fully disassembled with each part in its own plastic bag in my cargo shorts pockets (I only ever wear shorts and crocs BTW). I figure once they start shooting at me I will have enough time to assemble my weapon since the snow will greatly impede their speed and they won't be able to push my location.

Interesting! I did military service in Sweden (conscript) as "hunter soldier" in northern Sweden, something like an "arctic ranger". Our main personal weapon was AK5/modified FN FNC. Like many other military forces around the world training arctic warfare, we also for example trained going into a "isvak" i.e. going through a prepared hole in the ice on a lake in winter conditions, in full combat gear. This of course soaked everything completely in freezing water. If you are to travel any significant distance through northern Sweden in winter time, you may certainly be forced to cross frozen rivers or lakes, then the ice may fail and then you and your carried equipment becomes wet. So I think a complete "drenching" in water is not unrealistic situation in arctic conditions. The "maintenance" we did to our weapons after such baths was to remove the magazine, shake out excess water, check that the barrel was clear from snow/ice blockage and cycle the mechanism a few times. We did not, like in this clip, leave the weapons with large/unknown amounts of water inside.. That may be a bit too extreme, perhaps, but interesting test anyway! Of course the weapon was also often "subjected to snow" in similar way that has earlier been described in other comments. The AK5 was a reliable weapon in these conditions, the worst I remember was some quick "judo chop"/manhandling of the mechanism to get it running sometime.. I am happy that Sweden is now sourcing the AK5-replacement together with Finland, I hope this next weapon will also perform well under our very similar environment conditions!

Having experienced frozen assault rifle in arctic conditions it's really hard to try and handle the weapon without exposing it to melting ice or snow. It's just impossible so the rifles need to be designed in a way to keep them in functional condition. I remember one day when people had been keeping their rifles beside them in warm tents over night and at dawn outside temp was down to roughly -35 C I think it was like one out of ten rifles had issues due to moisture on surfaces of rifles freezing near instantly after moving out of warm tent that probably had quite high air moisture (people drying their damp clothes). Many kept ear plug stuffed on the muzzle to keep snow out of the barrel. Never saw anyone ending up plug deep in the barrel as the plugs expand a bit to keep from penetrating deeper in. Oh, and cleaning was really important. You really don't want to "forget" to clean after firing and then notice that the impurities left over jam the weapon when frozen.

Great test! Did military service with the Swedish K, AK4 (HK G3) and AK5(FN FNC). Lowest temperatures we execercised in was -36 Fahrenheit. Lived in tents for weeks in those temperatures. All weapons had issues, and running them as dry as possible was back then, mid 1980s to early 90s, a really good choice. Keeping frost out of them, especially when going in and out of tents that had some fireplace going, lead to excessive build up of frost. The machine guns were especially cranky, and best ran the SMG aka The Swedish K.

The results I expected. When I was in, and we had to qual during a snow storm, all our M4s would freeze up, becoming single shot rifles having to use the forward assist to get the bolt home until firing melted the ice. After the guns warmed up and were shooting, the warm gun would melt the snow as it fell, then, between strings of fire, it would all re-freeze. I'm guessing the dirty AR probably fared better because most of the crevices ice would form in were filled with dirty lube.
@aritakalo80113 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Some here have commented "just keep it clean of water". Little impossible in world covered in frozen water. Which as said then comes melted water when in contact with anything hot, like say combustion gasses heated metal. When that *take cover* shout rings out, the thing to take cover at is inside the snow in the lucky circumstance of there being enough snow depth to hide you lying down in it from enemy eyes and hopefully shrapnel with bit of a luck. In unlucky case it is hard ice you lie on top of or frozen rock hard bare ground. The lucky scenario results in face full of snow, gear full of snow, snow suit covered in snow, rifle caked in snow. In desert one down dives to the sand. here in North one dives in the moss in summer and in the snow during winter.

See I was in the early 90s before the M4, we had the A2/3, and in Germany especially up near Graf, when we would do quals, I always kept my rifle wrapped with couple of the hand warmer packets. Even when it would be snowing and 20 and below degrees, my rifle fired flawlessly. It was the same way when I was stationed in S.K. in 97-98. But that knowledge of weapon care came from having a DS who was from Alaska, and spent most of his Army career in Alaska who smoke us if he found us to have a weapon malfunction on the range.
@TacShooter3 жыл бұрын
I was in Alaska and the A1 and A2 never had problems freezing up, that I can remember, but I think the air is drier in Fairbanks and the Interior of Alaska seems to dump snow at the beginning of Winter and then stop for the rest of the winter. I don't remember ever qualifying in a snow storm.
@JarlPeregrine3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Just using lube and not going skinny dipping isn't going to make a difference if you are in actual conflict. Your rifle will pack with fire-shaken snow falling from the trees overhead, from the drift you are crawling through, and countless other things. Once you start shooting it melts and spreads everywhere. Assuming you survive the engagement, you will have no chance to clear your weapon until you get back to somewhere warm and _dry_. On the front line in the arctic, sub arctic or high mountains that's going to be a problem. And bear in mind this test was done when it was only mildly cold.

those loose tolerances aren't so good for keeping mud out of the receiver though. trade-offs.
@lingeringsnowleaf38293 жыл бұрын
@@DamageSixbut it also allow extremely easy clean up if mud get into it. You just need to dip the rifle in water for a wash or take the cover off and it will clean. Whereas for the AR, you need to completely disassemble the rifle and clean it manually, not possible in battle. I seems to me that people bring up the mud test as some sort of strawman argument for AR, when reality has shown the vastly superior reliability of the AK, especially in military settings where soldiers dont treat their guns like a expensive toy you bring out every weekend on a nice sunny day.
@DamageSix3 жыл бұрын
@@lingeringsnowleaf3829 But it's still not much of a sealed system. Rifles like the Galil or Valmet take some notes from the Kalashnikov for giving grease and burnt gunpowder a place to go to not lock up the system while still having more barriers between them and the outside world, so they take dustier or sandier environments better generally. I also think that an advantage predicated on the assumption that the user will be _extremely_ lax with maintenance in their down time doesn't entirely mitigate other aspects of a design. ergonomics, recoil impulse, inherent precision, while they're secondary to the foremost priority of going bang when you pull the trigger and not going bang when you don't, doesn't mean that these factors aren't something to consider in a trade-off. As well, "Reality has shown the vastly superior reliability of the AK" is somewhat hyperbolic. Not every entity that's reproduced the design has done much for quality control, and there's only so much that inherent design advantages can make up for that. I also sincerely hope that Kalashnikov owners don't generally assume that anecdotal incidents give them a pass on regularly maintaining their rifle. Also, if mud is a realistic and applicable circumstance to encounter that genuinely can impact the performance of the platform, does that really make it a strawman argument from top to bottom?

Most bolt guns will have problems, thats why arctic bolt actions have fluted bolts as well to shave off ice that has accumulated. Levers idk, i feel like theyd be surprisingly reliably bc of the leverage.. But the firing pin is visible & susceptible to water getting in & freezing. If it fires id expect it to cycle. Almost no handgun would survive this besides a desert eagle maybe. The tilting barrel is incredibly easy to defeat, literally just not holding it tight will cause a malfunction.
