I'm from Russia) Regarding the shot in the back of the head, it was necessary to take 7.62 ×25 mm with a TT type pistol (Tokarev) because when executions were practiced with a shot in the back of the head (approximately 1935-1953), there was no Makarov pistol as well as a cartridge for it. And such executions were most often carried out by KGB (former NKVD) officers. After Stalin's death, this lawlessness ended and the death penalty began to be carried out in much the same way as in Utah, as shown in the video, only the weapon there was just an AK. Several people are firing live ammunition and only one has an empty one, so that any of the firing squad can say that I am not the killer. I apologize in advance if I made mistakes somewhere)

Headshots are almost never instant and can take hours or days
@BaumCultist11 ай бұрын
@@qilin9915 Headshots are usually fatal within seconds or minutes, but in very rare instances a headshot can be survived for hours or even days like you mentioned.This is however basically a non-factor in a headshot like this, as the gun is right next to the head and therefore keeps almost all of it's energy when entering the skull, making a possibility of long concious survival very unlikely.The executioner is also likely to schoot again if the target somehow survives and if their not a sadist.Even worse, when the gun is placed right next to the head like it was done in the video, then the gases which follow the bullet will enter the wound and expand inside of the skull, scrambling the brain.
@CountryRaven54k11 ай бұрын
@@qilin9915 ever heard of the term, "Lights are on but nobody is home" thats usually what its like to get shot in the head, lights out, if youre still moving or your vitals are still pulling through its simply your body keeping you running. Abe Lincoln was reported to survive the initial GSW to the back of the head but never woke up again.
@sethmcavoy180011 ай бұрын
It wasn't. Since the Makarov uses such an underpowered cartridge at such close range, occasionally the bullet would curve along the interior of the skull instead of going straight through the brain.
@BaumCultist11 ай бұрын
@@sethmcavoy1800 While i am by far not even in the same galaxy of knowledge as real gun experts are, from what i can see from the video the Makarov is most certainly powerfull enough to shoot through the skull and severly damage the brain from such a short range, since it also exited from the other side of the skull.I also find it very unlikely that the Makarov would have have been as popular or even be considered an effective firearm if it was as weak as you claimed it to be from such a short range, which is a claim the previously mentioned video also disproves.And if the gun is placed right against the head as it was in the video, then even if your claim was accurate, the gases which follow the bullet would also travel into the wound and cause enormous damage by expanding inside of the skull.

We got into some sika deer and my dad took a neck shot on a doe at around 80 yards, 150 grain soft point, bolt action .30-06. The round actually completely twisted the neck 90° degrees such that when we got done skinning and quartering, the hide was headless and we had no neck to take home to make into stew or any other dish. How insane to see what a BAR would’ve done to an enemy soldier at close distance in France circa 1944. This just goes to show how the real science of Dr. Thumb is not “fake” nor is it “just for entertainment purposes” and actually showcases educational value to anybody interested in human anatomy and the reaction of biological material (simulated here) to the austere condition of supersonic lead projectiles entering into it. 10/10 would science again

@@JamesSmith-ix5jd That wasn't a thing in every prison. I've heard many stories, and it was either a drain, a pile of sawdust, or nothing. Usually the prison basement served as the execution chamber, the prisoner would first be read that his appeals were rejected. Sometimes it was done unexpectedly, as the prisoner was being led through a hallway. They did it similarly in East Germany aswell. And in 90s Belarus (according to late prison warden Oleg Alkayev), they took the condemned to a spot in the forest where a pit had already been dug. The condemned would be taken out of the van one at a time, made to kneel a few meters in front of the grave, and shot in the head, before being pulled down into the pit after he was pronounced dead.

My understanding is that the pistol shot wasn't directly to the back of the head, but more down at the base of the skull, to sever the spinal column, shock the brain, bring about instant unconsciousness and death. The executioners would wait in the cell of the accused, who had been taken to the interrogation room, only to be told that they were to be freed. They would enter their rooms in a good mood, not really paying attention, and suddenly the lights would go out...!

I'm not quite sure about the USSR, but in former eastern germany, the execution was carried out via "unerwarteter Nahschuss" which roughly translates to "unexpectet close shot". Basically, the guy was interviewed on a daily or at least frequent basis - but one day, as he entered the room, there was another guy, hidden behind the door. He would shoot a little lower than you did, more like the upper neck / lower skull, to destroy the part of the brain used for breathing, heartbeat etc., killing you instantly. One moment you'd be thinking you would be interviewed once more, next moment you'd never think again. If I wasn't against the punishment at all, I'd advise for this one.
@annasstorybox79069 ай бұрын
YES! I also dont know about the use of this in the USSR but im 100% sure that the shot placement for the russian method would be the same, nape of the neck/lower edge of the backside of the skull. Will go into the brain stem. I guess they just placed it incorrectly in this video. And yes, according to two anatomy professors that would kill instantly. Therefore target is also not uncommon for snipers in hostage situations as the person shot will just drop, avoiding the risk of their last movement causing harm to the hostage. Just that it is more common for snipers to aim from the front, so they will be aiming for somewhere in between the root of the nose (right between the eyes) or just below the nose. There are also cases of mob hits were people were shot behind the ear and suicide/murder with the gun placed in the mouth or under the chin pointing backwards and just slightly up. All are the same thing, just from diffrent angles. The bullet will go through the brain stem in any of these cases.
@NewBuildmini4 ай бұрын
That's pretty how much they did it in the USSR. One day the prisoner would be taken to the basement, where he'd be read that his appeals were rejected. Then he was led into an adjacent room, where he'd be made to kneel, and shot in the the head. You can see this in "The Americans", in episode 4 of season 4.

Your Soviet execution method is carried out inappropriately, and would most likely result in you losing your job. You are actually aiming higher than a Soviet officer would, and at a wrong angle. The target is brain stem just above the colliculi because theoretically, - destroying the brain stem results in instant death, since it controls vital functions like breathing. Severing brain stem above the colliculi in a mammal, - results in it instantly and permanently falling asleep (which is how we know about the function of Ascending Reticular Activation System (ARAS). You also need to aim at a slight ascending angle of 20-30 degrees, to make sure the compression wave and/or the bullet impacts part of the cerebellum and the telencephalon before exiting, causing massive brain hemorrhage and instant cessation of conscious and motor processes. This is why this method was believed to be entirely painless (although obviously none have survived it to ascertain that claim) and economical, with cases where more than one bullet was needed almost unheard of. So it wasn't "brutal" nor was it meant to be. The condemned would not be kept on Death Row for many years like in the United States, just long enough for the Politburo appointed commission to ascertain whether the case warrants the "Highest Measure" through strong evidence base and circumstances of the crime, and for Leniency Request to be looked at and approved or denied. There was no "last meal" , strong tea with lots of sugar and last cigarette were commonplace, however. Just don't ask me how I know the details. In late 1950-s/early 1960-s the method underwent slight "adjustment" - the shot was fired at a slight angle towards the left ear to minimize excessive blowout damage and disfigurement of the face, which was likely done to minimize psychological trauma to the executioner. Currently - there is no Capital Punishment in Russia, but the conditions of a prolonged sentence in a Maximum Security prison are in many cases so inhumane that the sentiment of many in Russia is that Capital Punishment is a better, more humane alternative. Belarus, however, still has Capital Punishment with methods and circumstances nearly identical, but with number of crimes that warrant it - smaller than in the USSR.

The version I've heard, from a source I tend to trust, was that amongst the many wounds were lethal head shots to both B&C. Granted there were many bullets flying around, but it was reported that Hamer fired two shots from his carbine, then sat down and had a smoke while everybody else was carrying on. Also, Hamer was well known & respected amongst his fellow lawmen not for being rough & tough and good with a gun, but for his detective work and what we call today social engineering, such as how he knew the pair would be on that road.

His conclusion was that it was actually more for the man being executed than for any of the executioners. The idea being that you'll know if you shot a blank, because of the recoil difference, but if you think that you might have it, you'd be more confident aiming for the heart. More people confidently aiming at the heart = a higher likely hood of a swift, relatively painless death. Granted, he was talking more about the black powder musket era firing squads of the early to mid 1800's, not the ones in Utah using modern 30-30 ammo
