-The Ballad of .22 Man Fellows, do gather and bend me an ear Hearken this legend that happened quite near; In the Idaho hills, as Winter expired 'Twas first told to Michael, a warrior retired From the lips of a Hero, this legend was told And never heard Michael a claim quite so bold Of nerve, and of skill, and small metal can That attracted the wrath of this sharp-sighted man As he gazed from his porch, just outside his front door, He noted the yardage, "Thirty-five-and-half-score." Then to arms did he go, as all good heroes do His hands, they were steady, his aim, it was true Though his weapon was small, some say almost a toy He chuckled, "Perhaps... In the hands of a boy." He pointed, calling out to his quivering foe, "You've awakened my wrath, and down you shall go!" Then swiftly and smartly, he pointed his gun, On account of the range, somewhere close to the sun He fired his shot, it rang out like a bell And he knew that he'd punched his foe's ticket to Hell To the maidens he turned, with a smile and a wink, Then four seconds later... a small metal *TINK!* And so ends the tale of that dastardly can And so goes the legend... of .22 Man

That extraordinary eyesight is very cool. About 30 years ago, I was driving Highway 2 along the edge of Glacier Park when my wife spotted and elk lying down at about five hundred yards. We pulled into the wayside and there was an older Native American man with his two grandsons there. After a bit I asked the gentleman what he'd use for that elk and he said "7mm," which please me 'cause that's what I was thinking. Then I said, "Would you take that shot?" and he said, "You couldn't miss 'im from here." A little later I was talking to one of the boys, probably 14 or so, and he said, "There go several elk up through that pass," and he pointed to a very distant snow field high on a mountain. I couldn't see anything; got out the binoculars, and there were 4 little specs heading up that field that barely registered as elk through the glasses. My mouth hung open a bit when I saw that. Amazing.

There have been tests and some people have 220:20 vision. Which means they can see things clearly 100 feet away that others would struggle to see. This puts their sight at about half of that of a bald eagle.

@@hogandromgool2062I swear I can re adjust my eyes. Like focus on things that aren’t there. I learned from looking at my finger in front of my eye, and then looking at it when it isnt there. I thought I could figure out a way to make my eyes zoom in or something(Don’t judge me I was a kid when I learned this). But honestly I never figured out how to zoom in, just like re adjust what my eyes focus on. I just tried so much as a kid I can focus on the air and make everything else blurry, I swear you can focus on things behind them too, but it never really zooms... 😂 It’s kinda weird, sometimes it feels like I’m gonna get stuck. But that never happened. I wonder if it’s something like that though, like they can focus on things further away or actually zoom in with their eyes, like some animals do.

Yep. When I was in the Army, sometimes, when we'd be on the range, we'd ask each other: Would you stand at 500 meters and let Private Snuffy take one shot at you for $1,000? Sometimes, it would be a hard yes because that particular Joe simply couldn't shoot. But with others, you'd be like, 'Nope.' If I had to stand at 500 meters with this guy and a .22, that'd be a hard no. That can was 700 yards. I'm thinking he's going to hit a man sized target at 500 or less.

Maybe his childhood one is a good one. Never tried 700 yards, but i have an early 1900s savage model 5, a beautiful bolt action .22 with a 23 inch barrel and a fixed 4 power on it. At 500 yards, i hit about 5/10 on a full size steel torso. They barely ding, you have to listen really hard. Also, they barely chip the paint off the torso, leaving no mark from that range. When you get up close you can see light skip marks and can really tell the rounds were coming in at a downward angle. About 21 feet of drop at that range great video, as usual

100% bullshit artist. The simple fact is, even with the best match grade ammo, 22lr isn't that accurate at distance. I’m not sure about hitting it that consistently but familiarity with the location and gun play huge factors when exact precision is needed. It probably took him at least a few hundred shots to narrow down exactly where to aim and then practice shooting that exact spot. When you need to be extra precise, having visual guides such as a tree in the distance, ingrained muscle memory, lots of experience estimating the effects of wind and a perfect understanding of the unique defects of your gun that alters the trajectory of each bullet is key. He was in an unfamiliar location, had an unfamiliar setup with a different gun, has definitely grown since he was a kid so his muscle memory is slightly off and he just hasn’t had that much practice. Considering how close he got with all those factors against him, I think he was telling the truth. Never underestimate just how precise humans can become at one specific task as with enough patience, practice and determination, a person can achieve something most would consider impossible.

Yep, I'm pretty sure with several kids, several 500-round bricks of ammunition, and infinite summer vacation time to just sit there plinking at the can forever, they hit it eventually. Probably several times. Possibly numerous times, depending on how persistent they were -- you know how kids can be. And only the high points remain in memory decades later. We used to shoot 1000yd open-sight/Iron sight at HMS Raleigh and Bisley but that was with a 7.62 and firing very consistent rounds. The training targets are 6ft diameter to give an idea at that range what people might need to even spot in, my best was 3inch group over 8 rounds but that was after putting over 100 rounds through the weapon with an average of 7-10 inch and having very good weather conditions. Now I know I’m a very good shot, been shooting since I was 8 years old and can even now hold my own in competition. I’m 30 my eyes aren’t as good as they were at 15 years old but I reckon with a few practice rounds I’d still get close to that personal best, not having fired a gun in a couple of years. A .22lr though, I’ve never shot anything past 250yds with that but targets and prey animals for that caliber are pretty small. The ideal kill area on a rabbit is what 2in wide through the shoulder or chest and with animals you don’t want to make mistakes. I feel like 500yds a coke can could be fairly consistent but yeah like you all say, with wind you aren’t attempting a kill at that unless you don’t care about animals. Fair play to the guy though, he had a go without bitching and moaning too much

@@DSMattitude I think anywhere you shoot a lot, you get a better sense of the range, the wind behaviour, sightmarks etc. When I was a kid, my range was an old railway cutting on my grandfather's farm. So nice and level, berms either side and at the back. My cousins and I just got a feel for how everything worked in that location. Then trying to do the same thing on other ranges, I was often a lot less accurate. It's why I still love long range rifle shooting though because there's just so many factors to work into each shot.
