During our how far is 22 deadly video a fan commented and stated that us having troubles hitting the target at 500 were ridiculous and that he regularly shot soda cans at 710 yards with a Ruger 10/22 using Winchester 22lr ammunition. This seemed like an insane claim so we invited him to prove it.

-The Ballad of .22 Man Fellows, do gather and bend me an ear Hearken this legend that happened quite near; In the Idaho hills, as Winter expired 'Twas first told to Michael, a warrior retired From the lips of a Hero, this legend was told And never heard Michael a claim quite so bold Of nerve, and of skill, and small metal can That attracted the wrath of this sharp-sighted man As he gazed from his porch, just outside his front door, He noted the yardage, "Thirty-five-and-half-score." Then to arms did he go, as all good heroes do His hands, they were steady, his aim, it was true Though his weapon was small, some say almost a toy He chuckled, "Perhaps... In the hands of a boy." He pointed, calling out to his quivering foe, "You've awakened my wrath, and down you shall go!" Then swiftly and smartly, he pointed his gun, On account of the range, somewhere close to the sun He fired his shot, it rang out like a bell And he knew that he'd punched his foe's ticket to Hell To the maidens he turned, with a smile and a wink, Then four seconds later... a small metal *TINK!* And so ends the tale of that dastardly can And so goes the legend... of .22 Man

Good guy, heart of gold, and legit. You have to remember he was doing this back at an age and time when all we did was shoot a 22 in our spare time. A 200 round box of ammo was always in our hand, put there by our dads and our uncles after a hard day's work. In a lot of ways that was our pay. We shot everything, there was always a new challenge to hit something smaller and further away. We are not talking BS when we recall these events, heck we got bored with our shotguns one day and shot clays in flight with our 22s. Not every clay was hit, but we hit enough of them to take bragging rights until the next time. Please don't challenge me to do it today, but I bet I am not the only one that could shoot clays in flight with a 22 as a young man. You had 22 man out there in the cold blowing wind and he was still walking them in at 710 yards with iron sights. Then you handed him a modern-day riffle with a scope, which he never held before, let alone shoot, and he nailed it. It's good to see you all get out there with him and have a great day at the range with a challenge!!!!!!!!!!

Skeptical he would have done it at that range even without the wind. But perhaps his original claim held up, in that setting at that time, he could do it. They even mentioned at the end that he would have to hold onto a random target in the terrain to be able to make the target (rather than aiming at the target itself). If they really shot a lot against that tractor, I guess they could have learned that they had to aim near a specific tree to be able to hit the target. I.e. at that point they knew how to adjust for that very specific condition to make the shot.

@@irispettson I think that was probably the case. If you do something a lot as a kid, eventually muscle memory, and memory in general will take over. Having the same backdrop, and a static point of aim for something that you're familiar with can produce repeatable results pretty easily.

@@anderslarsen2311 Look at the over-shoulder shot at 11:00. Firstly, the target is set on ground below the shooter - you can't always guarantee fields are completely flat for 700 yards. Second, you can see the muzzle of the rifle is aimed upwards. It's not as extreme as they joked in the beginning of the video, but it's there.

This video was one of your best for sure. I believe he truly did hit it when he was younger. I think time has just faded his memory on how often he could land that shot (which is clearly not often) but man you gotta respect the hustle and commitment to standing by his talk. The fact he even got close, regardless if it was 3 to 4 targets width away at 710 yards is still extremely impressive with irons. Doubly so with ruger irons...

Just a quick note about vision; while in VN as a Helicopter Door-gunner I could pick up movement at significant distance. I always wondered if I had different or more acute vision ability. Then I read this "Chuck Yeager, the famous test pilot and World War II fighter ace, was known for his exceptional vision and flying skills. During WWII, he was credited with seeing enemy aircraft from distances that were considered quite impressive for the time. Although exact figures vary, reports suggest that experienced pilots like Yeager could spot enemy planes from about 10 to 20 miles away under ideal conditions." There are shooters who can see distances that others can't, I wish I still had my vision but the years have mellowed it a lot. I can still hit what I aim at in defensive situations though.

It might be almost mathematically impossible, but someone with eyesight so rarely adjusted to long ranges, so experienced in a very nuanced skill involving that trait, and the time that living rural with nothing else to do from a young age into adulthood... Math and probability are not accurate here. This involves a factor that we just can't measure because we don't know how to replicate it. Plus he nearly hit that thing with a 10/22! The fact that he got as close as he did at his current age and with the conditions of this video (windy AF, different environment, different shooting position, etc.) makes me want to believe that he pulled that shot off back in the day when he had younger eyes and was consistently shooting in the same environment (instead of a new one like in this video). Any way you look at it, this video is a win for him, for everyone involved, and for all of us. His random comment in a sea of thousands of comments on a GT video got him a free flight out to have a range day with Mike and the GT crew. Awesome job to them as well for treating him as well as they did, for being a total stranger they just hung out with him and treated him like one of the boys for a day, instead of berating him and calling him out for talking shit on the internet. @@gumby6124 Yeah, it seems pretty obvious. The dude just took a few shots and was close despite the wind which was definitely not insignificant over that distance. Once you're dialed in it wouldn't be too hard to get fairly consistent. It's not too different than landing a skateboard trick or keeping a good racing line... repetition is the key. Plus people forget just how much visual acuity they had when they were younger, since it's gradually lost over time. Seems like an opportunity for more content to me. They should setup somewhere with less wind and try again. They just need to find someone who can resolve those cans visually like he can.

He’s for sure not a natural talent, but someone who genuinely has probably shot more .22 than the rest of the population. Also if he has 20/25 vision, there’s a chance he can make out bright colors, and obstructions. People read a summary of 20/25 vision and assume it’s worse than 20/20. It has its gives and takes. I have 20/25 and it was an absolute thrill of a f***ery experience in the military trying to explain I’m far sighted, and my near sightedness is trash. @@JACS420 Hmmmm, reference points after 3 - 30 rounds are not the same as consistent reference points of years. Like a dancer, to know where, when and how to move in a day does not make you a good dancer. Takes lots of practice to get it spot on and easily repeatable. Then if you stop for a decade and try again it's not the same, I'm guessing. I am not saying he ever did or didn't shoot that far though. I wished he did, but I would have been quite surprised. I pulled off some freak shots at 1400m - 1800m with a .223, to annoy my brother with his .338 but we both already knew that they were just freak shots.
