What's awesome about being a red state Constitutional carry resident is that I get to enjoy lots of different weapons between my paltry collection and those of my brother and friends. Anything else is 'too weak'. My dad's uncle was like that. Annoyed me to no end. He told me that the SKS round wasn't big enough to kill a deer because he didn't understand that the 7.62x39 and 7.62x51 are both 30 caliber rounds and a soft nose round was more than enough to kill a deer. I did it multiple times, but not on his land. It was .308, .30-30 or .300WinMag only. And AR only.

From reliability perspective civilian ak-102 runs perfectly on all but subsonic commercialy avaliabe ammo. But accuracy can vary significantly depending on specific type. 5.56 Saiga's are quite popular in Russia as a hunting carbine due to vide selection of ammo

I had one(sold it because mags were too difficult to find at the time) and it run great. One time I had some faulty Fiocchi rounds that were overpressured and jammed my NEA, I ended up shooting all the rounds with the AK because it got just one jam(two hits at the handle and it was good to go, while the AR15 was a pain in the ass). 9 hole reviews recently did an AK accuracy with a Bulgarian 74 with irons and it performed how we all assume AK’s do. However, after they fitted all the zenitco furniture and placed optics on it (I think it was a red dot with a 3x magnifier) it actually preformed far better than an AR-15 with the same modifications. They thought that maybe it was just the optics but also because of how tight the fitment is on the zenitco lower handguard, they think it’s possible that it messed with the harmonics of the barrel which in turn made it that much more accurate. If that’s true, that’s insanely cool

They're both fine. The AR is better for Americans simply because of better parts and ammo availability, especially if SHTF and you're scavenging police armories after all the police have turned into zombies or whatever. In a Red Dawn situation, you're probably better off with AKs and scavenging dead commies after you hit their supply lines. But between the two, I expect literal zombies over paratrooper commies, so the AR wins out. It's simply early mover advantage. The AR was here first, and dominated the market. In other places, with other markets, the AK may be the better choice. I don't have a problem with anyone anywhere buying guns of the opposite type, against local market forces, just as long as you acknowledge and prepare for the downsides of your choice being less popular. And if you own both, even better. One thing I'll add, which is no small point under a Democrat regime or other anti-gun government somewhere: AK 80% lowers are not that easy to turn into actual guns. Unless something has changed, AR lowers are just so much easier to covertly (and legally) proliferate than AKs. If you want to own guns you don't want potential confiscators knowing about, the AR is just the best choice, hands down. Heck, there's a machine you can buy that'll turn a solid block of aluminum (a 0% lower) into a finished AR lower now automatically for you in about 3 hours. We've had automation for finishing 80% lowers for years. AKs, from what I understand, require a lot of special tools.

Nice to see people coming around to the 105 idea. I have two 105-ish guns (but with 14.5+pinned barrels because...I'm too lazy for NFA stuff) both built by Jim Fuller maybe 12-13 years ago now. Early adopted to the Kreb's retaining plate, the Tromix charging handle, the Kreb's enhanced safety and my two rifles even feature the Kreb's 105 block they used to make, etc. Been running it for a long time now and they're just incredible rifles. At the time I was dumb enough to spend $300 for proper Russian folding stocks (shortly before they flooded the market). I admit I think the 12.5" AK's are - as you said - basically the perfect short range carbine option. Fold the stock, small package, no real ballistic penalty, etc. Great guns.
