Nah Kevin thats what makes this channel better than your old show. Now you're able to take the time to show us the little things. Like these hinges, for an example ive changed pins before but seeing how to changed the springed part of the hinges. Ive never seen that before and really had no idea you could change them like that, im impressed learned about something new. But that tv show probably would have said the same thing. Its not interesting enough. Well it kind of is cause they may be a nothing part to kost people but those hinges are actually a pretty important part of any auto build. If ya dont have good working doors how good is that finished product actually be??? Again thanks so much Kevin loved this episode and hope your thumb feels better lol

The size of the socket that fits the fastener, the weight of the hammer used to finesse the hinge pin, the grit of the disc used to de-burr the hinge pin grinding scratches...THESE are the kind of things that make your videos sooooo "how-to" friendly, man! Better to use the vice as a press to drive the bushing in, you can deform the hinge ears hammering on them out in space (even with small hits) For the pins the easiest is to weld a bolt to the top and use a slide hammer. Though on a 2nd gen the piece the pin is in is also a press fit so you want to make sure it doesn't move so if you can grip it with the vice it is better. Also for a thirdgen top down solutions makes a nice greasable pin kit. Personally I paint them when apart or at least epoxy prime. Also from the jungle site you can get a set of round rods sold for lathe practice, they have different sizes and have aluminum, brass, steel rods those kits make great punches for driving bushings out as you can find the right size to shoulder onto the bushing.
@paintucation
@paintucation 4 ай бұрын
THanks man! I appreciate the tips! Never thought about the bench vice for a press ( he says with a press-brake set right under the vice...) but that makes perfect sense.
@Avi8tor857
@Avi8tor857 4 ай бұрын
@@paintucation lol yeah I have a actual press, and I still use the vice for small things. I think it comes from being self taught with no tool budget as a teen, I have a fully set up home shop now but I still use the closest tool that will do it. I've also used c-clamps as a press to put the bushing in. My toy/continuous project car is a 89 firebird. It has a 5.7 aluminum LS1, T56 in it in its current configuration. The body has 220k miles on. I've owned that car since the mid 90s. When i did the LS swap I had the fenders off to replace the battery tray (the only rust on the car) and did the hinges then on that car. That turned into a mini restoration. Though I still need to eventually paint the entire car, it still has a cheap single stage repaint from 2002 on it, it still looks good.

Taking photos for reassembly is great if what you are working on hasn't been buggered by a previous repair. We are truly spoiled by modern phones. Back when these cars were in their prime the hinges were already wearing/worn out and often the hammer head that had last worked on them before you had put parts in upside down etc. Back then you just had to look up a row of parked cars to check which side bushings should be pressed in from if you weren't sure, now we can reference Kevin's "Garbage Camaro" videos. Thanks Kevin !

Hello again Kevin. I'm becoming a huge fan! Love that you take the time to go through all the detailed steps. As a hobby I spent 35 years restoring 29 cars, learning more every time. I had an award winning 71 Torino GT with every option supplied in 1971. The hideaway headlights I restored had a whopping 118 parts to disassemble, restore and then reassemble. The vacuum motor was NA but I did find an NOS part which belonged to a 1983 Lincoln except all brackets were different. Used that by cutting off the originals then welding. I bought two additional parts cars and actually restored two hideaway headlight sets and sold one to help offset the costs for $2000! I feel what your doing here! Keep it up brother. Great work! Thanks, Mark Citrus County Florida.

In high school, my friend drove his grandparent’s hand me down 2 door 72 ford ltd. Had coffin lids for doors that weighed more than I did back then. By 1984 you had to lift up on the doors to get them to close. This might not be an issue so much with newer lighter weight cars, but for the old land yachts it was a common repair and was often overlooked due to the cumbersome nature of the job that usually required some help while precariously balancing the door on a floor jack. A real treat from memory lane mainly because I was able to watch you do all the work while I sat on my couch lol. Very informative and enjoyable to watch. This car build brings me back to fall '84. I met this skinny brown haired cutie in an evening English 101 class. I was smitten right from the start. Important to this story, she drove a beautiful '80 Z28 - white with blue accents. I can see the car like it was yesterday but be damned if I can remember her name. We went out for the semester but in the end she just enjoyed cocaine more than she did me. (This was south Florida in '84. The place was swimming in coke and a 8 ball meant a good time back then. Remember kids don't do drugs😅.) My day job as a mechanic didn't make enough for her habits. So she dumped me for a boat dealer who later had to leave for Costa Rica with a different girl. I met a less skinny brown haired picture of sin. The love of my life without an expensive habit. I remember her name.. Should have married her but I was young and stupid. Oh well. That this was 40 years ago blows my mind.

Kevin, I am not a body guy and have no idea or intentions to do it. However I really like watching your videos to learn and appreciate how hard it is. The TV shows as we all know, less commercials, are about 20 mins of actual content that condenses down hours of work. Keep doing what you are doing and we will keep watching....🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

Yawn, 🙄 boring….. Just kidding! Boy those springs are tough! That tool is the bomb! I changed one years ago with some colorful metaphors and various flat tools. Wasn’t pretty! At least you didn’t draw blood driving that pin! I don’t know how many times I almost drilled my hand or fingers! Loved the video! Thank you for letting us tag along!

I have done theses hinges myself back in the day. I worked over 20 years in auto body and paint. They can be a tough nut to crack and well done. Bumper to bumper means you have touched every part so no part is unimportant especially the mostly unseen ones they keep the shiny ones looking good.

Kevin we have all done it. Holds up left thumb as I repeat: Hammer, Thumb, Extension, Socket. Difference being, I did mine while trying to remove exhaust pipes from the exhaust manifold that had a rounded off bolt so I could install a new exhaust Y with cat's.

Kevin, you are going to hate yourself when that bushing begins to prematurely age… personally, I would have divited the hinge around the bushing point in about 4 areas to tighten up the bushing in the hinge. Hammer, pin, thumb… ouch! Yep… been there 😂

Are you talking about in the bushing-port? ( whatever the hole is called?) how to divot? a chisel or punch? Never occurred to me , but it seems like a great technique to keep things snug in a good interference fit....
@junkyardsearcher6407

I would use a punch 4 shots around the hole it’ll tighten up the bushing just enough to eliminate any slop.
