What if you had a little recirculation pump to bring some cider back up to the top, while you were still grinding? Then perhaps you would not have so much shoving of the apples into the disposal?
@Myk639 жыл бұрын
If you have the pump (like for homebrewing) that should help . Otherwise by the time you buy the disposal and a pump it may be worth it to buy/make a real apple grinder.
@Myk6313 жыл бұрын
@patches4patches It works and is way under half the price you can think about getting a manual apple crusher for.
@Myk6313 жыл бұрын
@golfernky I don't know if I'd go that far, but it works. If I could scrounge up about 4" width worth of saw blades I'd make a different one that had more course of a grind.

Very cool idea! Seems to work like a charm too!
@Myk6313 жыл бұрын
@TheMinisterofDefence It sure wasn't when I was using my hand to push the apples in. That will sure get your attention when the hammers start working and making their noise. It was mounted above the press then so I wouldn't have been able to get my hand in it. Once I started using the tub I cut the dowel.
@Myk6311 жыл бұрын
Go for it. The disposal idea is from a forum (and someone copied it and sells "plans"). The laundry tub is my addition.
@Myk6313 жыл бұрын
@greggfla Of course you probably wouldn't want to scrounge the disposal out of the garbage but it is a clever repurposing. I'm working on something you'll probably appreciate even more. It's a complete repurposing I picked up off the net. When I finish the video I'll send it to you to make sure you get it.

this is so cool !!! I have to check what we have as an equivalent over here, I really appreciate you doing this vid for, take care !

It is a lot easier than the old contraption I used. It was a big metal thing that must be 100 years old and you have to crank that thing hard and get some momentum. I had someone else with me holding it down because it is so hard to crank. Then there is the press next. Who knew making cider was so hard? It is easy if you can keep the momentum but when you lose it you have to crank it backward and try again.

how did you connect the disposal to the utility sink? have you seen any issues with the vibration of the disposal cracking the sink?
@Myk637 жыл бұрын
Just cut the hole big enough for that size of drain. Disposals come with the connections. No issues with vibration cracking it and it's a very cheap/thin tub.
@wesleybobby7 жыл бұрын
Any chance you remember the size of the hole that you cut into the sink?
@Myk637 жыл бұрын
No but 3.5" is the standard size hole in a kitchen sink. That would be the standard size of the disposer's strainer.
@Myk6311 жыл бұрын
Amazingly I've never had it overheat and trip the breaker. I expected it to happen at least once per bushel batch. I think it's GE.

@DearestBecky Some things like this I searched the internet for. My idea for an apple grinder takes a stack of saw blades, a welder, a bunch of stainless steel, pulleys and a big motor. My brother can get me the saw blades for free but not fast enough to make a stack of them.
@Myk6313 жыл бұрын
@maddiepost1 The idea came from orchard forums, I don't lay claim to it. Although I would like to take away as much profit as I can from a guy who's selling plans to make what is available for free on the internet. Mainly because he spams his book on the forum where I got the idea. I'd like to block that guy from making comments but YT won't allow it :)

oooo awesome,. Tho when he poured the water into disposal, it actually sounds likely our neighbour who had fallen into his wood chipper.. What a gruesome thing to witness & a horrible way to end up dead, at least he became fresh garden mulch for the nearest cemetery. Apologise I have a dark twisted sense of humour. :]

I do like the idea of running a lot of the juice back through. Makes sense to me. I have never tried it, but I am sure it would add tannins from the skins. Nice. Thanks for the video
@Myk636 жыл бұрын
Even with the screw head grinders, which are based on old designs round things want to just spin. The cuts let it get a bite and they fit better.
@Myk636 жыл бұрын
Running the juice through the is to flush it. Disposals are supposed to grind with a good water flow. Also a reason to quarter, less over heating.
