As we often hear quoted..."we've come a long way!" Watch in this video just how hideous it was to use a Windows "Smart" phone released the same year as the iPhone 1.

It's incredible how Microsoft failed bringing desktop to phones, then failed with Windows 8 trying to bring phone experience to desktops, then failed making windows phone. It's all fantastic

New phones are better than the prehistoric ones, the shocker! I had the Glofiish X650 (it seems to share most of its hardware with the X800) back in 2008-2009 and I loved it. It wasn't a good phone (sometimes it would ignore incoming calls), but it was halfway to being a good smartphone. It could do pretty much everything the iPhone could do, but had a VGA screen, basically Retina PPI, compared to the screens on the first generations iPhones. It had great book reader apps (AlReader is the one I liked the most), a great app with the map of my city that supported GPS (2gis), Windows Media Player that supported importing playlists from a PC, and with the included 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter I could use regular 3,5mm headphones with it, which wasn't guaranteed back in the '00s. It didn't have 3G support, but I remember getting a cheap EDGE/GPRS unlimited plan and spending an entire summer vacation at my grandparents' cottage with just this phone as my only device and having a great time, staying in touch with friends via ICQ, Skype, etc, having access to the Internet (although quite slow), my favorite music and a shitload of books. Also, not only it had an FM radio receiver, but also an FM transmitter mode, so you could tune in to a some preset FM station frequency in your car and listen to music from your phone if your car stereo didn't have AUX support.

We forget, but windows mobile 6 was a beautiful thing back in the day.

Well, I remember when I first saw the specs for the iPhone I was like "where's the hole for the reset button". I was so used to Windows Mobile locking up when running 3rd party software that I expected everything to behave like that.

I had several Windows CE PDAs ( Hp Jornada, Casio stuff) and Windows Mobile phones ( HTC Tytn, MDA Music, T-Mobile Sidekick). It was a great time for tinkering. It wasnt stable or good... but fun to tinker with. I remember my Phone app crashed a lot and Intergalactic bubbles was a fun game :D The software available for all those mobile processors was a pain... because i didnt know there could be different processors ( ARM MIPS ...) I learned so much from those things back in the day. Good times.

I had this phone and it ran TomTom really well. No more cables trailing across the dashboard to connect to a separate GPS device like I had when using a Dell Axim X30. It wasn't all bad and it worked well enough for calls, messaging and gps navigation in one unit.

The display was awesome and the device did anything I needed at a budget. And it didn't have any shitty proprietary iPhone connector. There were custom roms as well. Loved it.

Ha, the design of that voice command thing screams being designed for a hotkey rather than used from the touch screen. I can imagine some dude thinking he’s the coolest thing ever for picking up his phone, pressing the button, and checking his calendar or sending a message while walking (or driving!) Some of those ringtones are surprisingly decent too, like the Twinkle Twinkle one isn’t played straight but is embellished with chords etc. And they almost all have key changes from the original as well. That at least makes it sound a little more of a novelty for our intrepid frequently-travelling businessman.

It’s so weird to think about how when I was young people talked about computers from 10 years prior having “kilobytes, not megabytes!” and now we’re saying it about 15 year old phones with “megabytes, not gigabytes!”. Time, eh!

Reminds me of my first smartphone. A pocket PC on the Cingular network.

I used to have a Windows CE pocket computer in 2007, but I was only using it as a GPS sat-nav.

This thing reminds me of the HTC Advantage I once bought (second hand of course) to replace my ageing Sony Ericsson P910i because I thought that was the coolest thing ever. Ran Windows mobile as well, I installed a custom ROM that made it look even cooler (and slightly Android like) but run even worse. Internal storage on a HDD, a Whopping 16GB! Phone calls could only be over the speaker, my main gripe with it. But I loved the physical keyboard that magnetically clicked to the unit flat, or to the base making it 'work' as a very small laptop PC. Shortly after I bought the first Samsung Galaxy and subsequently other Android phones, which worked so much greater as functional phones but missed the ooh and aah factor of the before smartphones. Smartphones now are usually very boring to me.

I had a lot of winmo smart phones, back in the day. I uzed Wisbar (wizbar? I forget the name) to make the start menu thing better. I also had some sort of skin or theme for my last Palm winmo 6 phone, and it felt a lot more modern. Also... i felt that a physical keyboard was required to use winmo or CE correctly.

A had a Mio A701 and it was great. Built in GPS and I ran Tomtom for the sat nav. What wasn't great was using a stylus to type in text messages. So I did get an Eten Glofish and yes it had a slide out keyboard but it was awful. The only device I had with a decent keyboard was the Nokia 9210 communicator. But Nokia were obsessed with non-touch screen devices and it was obvious the future for a device like this was touch screens. Just like I knew that the GUI desktop was the future, not DOS.

I remember back in the mid 2000s I only know one person who had an android phone and he let me watch one of my youtube videos on it and that was the coolest. Watching youtube on a cell phone. I didn't get a smartphone until around 2014. I still have the phone but it was my first and I'm on another one that's faster. I was hoping you would show the FM Radio. Curious if it's possible to run Doom on this phone.

Your memories are slightly off, Android first came up in late September 2008, so that must have been no sooner than 2009, not mid-2000s. And of course, there are Pocket PC / Windows CE / Windows Mobile (damn it, so many names for that OS line) Doom ports, so there must be one that works on this phone.

@@BilisNegra Maybe it was 2008 because KZbin did work and android was the first mobile os that I've used that could play KZbin back when they used adobe flash player for the video player. Now HTML5 is used.
